The truth of Diesel 4 years later....

Seeing that Ex wants to talk retrospectively, I thought it would be interesting to examine a statement I made about 4 years ago:

"The effect that it will have is that when we go out with all swingmen, smartly coached teams will break the game down to a halfcourt game and they will force us to win it from outside.
That's part of our problem now. We win based on our ability to outshoot the other team. We rarely go to the foul line. We don't create enough easy opportunities to score. The effect is that when we're not hitting a good percentage from outside... we lose.
That won't change until we get an inside man. "

Since that time, we have added a bruiser at PF and a 6th man who can create his own shot.

Still... we're a team who can be pushed into a halfcourt game where we will have to win from outside. We have shooters, so it's possible... but nothing beats an inside presence.

So to revive this Come to Diesel Moment and make it more 2010ish.

What can we do this offseason to improve ourselves?

I've been thinking about this and I wonder... should we seek a different Center?

Let's say we get Joe back (max year deal).

What would be the main argument against using Horf/Bibby as trade bait for a Center with size and offensive post moves?

The AJC just interviewed me about the Hawks!

Since I'm so noisy and combative towards the Hawks journalists on Twitter, I got a chance to do a phone interview with one of the people at the AJC covering the Hawks. She asked me a lot of interesting questions about the fan experience, so I spoke my mind.

To sum it up, I said that Philips is aesthetically great, but the fan experience can be disheartening, especially the problem of other teams' fans infesting the place. I made sure to take the media to task for parroting the "Atlanta has bad fans" meme over and over as a lazy crutch; I stated that in my opinion, it's the journalists' job to figure out why! It's a question about Atlanta itself, not just the sports teams -- why do we not 'put on for our city?' There are a lot of answers, and it's good to see the local media at least asking about them!

Hopefully what I said isn't taken wildly out of context. :)

for

Nenad Kristic/Russel Westbrook/Mullens.

Why...

OKC is young but they lack 2 things.

1. Dominant Big.
2. Leadership.

In Bibby and Horf they get two players who have been to the playoffs.'
1 Dominant Big. and Leader.

They give up Westbrook who is the prize in all this because they have Eric Maynor in the Wings.

So this basically breaks down to Horf for Westbrook.

Horf is an Allstar.

Westbrook may be a future allstar.
In the process we get Kristic.

Celts: The NBA's Ol' Dirty Bastards?

((The following quotes are best heard while playing a Simply Red song in the background))

First a quip from last week's Bobcats-Celtics tilt, from a man who should know better by now, Stephen Jackson, on his good friend Paul Pierce:

Quote

Add this note to the pile of instances when trash talking gets to be too much. While Paul Pierce attributed it to competitiveness, Stephen Jackson felt it was more personal. "I respect them as a team, they're a great team and they play hard, but when they get to a point where they get to disrespecting people and it's not about basketball, that's where I have a problem," said Jackson, who has had his share of off-the-court issues during his 10 seasons. "Everybody knows me as a basketball player, but everybody knows me off the court, too. So if it's about basketball, I'm cool. I respect everybody on their team, and I respect them as being a good team, but when it gets to the point where you're disrespecting us as a man, that's another problem.

“Certain things were said, quotes by certain people, and there’s no need for me to drop names, they know what was said,’’ Jackson said. “It turned disrespectful when certain things were said. You can be emotional, talk to your teammates and do all that, but when it’s getting personal and you’re directing certain things to people as far as their manhood, that’s when a problem comes up. And I guarantee you, if I wasn’t in this gym, that wouldn’t have been said to me.’’

Now from Sunday, after the Wizards let the Celtics get under their skin and back into the game, Andray Blatche looked forlorn after his encounter with our good friend, Kevin Garnett:

Quote

Blatche was noticeably upset and appeared to hold back tears as he explained his encounter with Garnett, which nearly got heated when Garnett approached Blatche and tried to wrestle the ball away from him. Blatche appeared to throw an elbow as Garnett continued to taunt him. Blatche later flung Garnett into a cameraman and sent him to the foul line for two free throws. Garnett smiled as he was helped off the ground.

"I see myself as defending myself as a player. I'm a man, just like they a man. If a man is talking to me this close to my face," Blatche said, moving his hand toward his cheek. "I'm going to say something back. He has to respect me just like I respect him. I just, 'Get up out of my face.' He was this close in my face - I can feel his lips touching my cheek - I wasn't bragging saying 'Ah we winning.' It was 'Back up.' "

And its not just the wily vets like KG, Trasheed, and Pierce. For good measure, throw in Chris Paul buying wolf tickets from Rajon Rondo, of all people, insisting Rondo "is gonna respect me like a man" as he chases Rondo into the Boston locker room -- again amidst a Celtic victory.

Surely by the time you've reached the NBA you've heard your share of trash, and probably dished a good deal of it out, too. But what exactly is this "manhood-disrespecting" chatter from Boston that has professional players up in arms and sniveling into the nearest microphone after the game? Whatever Boston is doing/saying, it's obviously something that goes way beyond people's mamas and army-boots-as-chosen-attire. And it's obvious that, against everyone aside from maybe the Hawks, it's working. Have the Celtics gone too far? Or are they just taking it far enough?

This stuff makes me appreciate Horford's and Zaza's '08 rendez-vous even more now.

Teague! Teague! Teague!

This is a list of young 21-27 year old "points" in the EC, the bar has been set leaguewide while Sund made a terrible chest move signing Bibby(31) three guaranteed years.

Rondo-playoff
Harris-lotto, soon to be Wall(New Jersey will be a very dangerous team as early of next year)
Lou Williams-lotto
Jack-playoff
Rose-playoff
Mo Williams-playoff
Brandon Jennings-playoff
Stuckey-lotto
Nelson-playoff
Felton-playoff

Current starters in Bibby's class:
Earl Watson- top ten pick
Arroyyo/Chalmers- just short of playoff
Duhon- top ten pick
Bibby- playoff
Foye- l top ten pick

I'm not even taking in account the top WC pgs, influx of current rooks, and future mega rooks (WALL) also overseas prospects.
Teague is the only guy that can compete with these players night in and night out. I don't know if he a future 7-t0 year starter for ATL but I do believe he'll be a very good back up ala Kyle Lowry at the very least. This is the time Woodson needs to ramp up the learning curve and look past mistakes in general. Get him accustomed to the starting pgs that league is now producing. I feel confident in saying Teague is a more effective player than Bibby at this point in their careers.

To all those saying we can't do it because of playoff race, it's pick your poison between Orlando and Cleveland in the second round. Third or Fourth place pretty much has no significance.

Thrashers: Need Playoffs? Call 1-800-AARP

48-year old defenseman? Anybody?

To Don Waddell, age ain't nothing but a number. Especially when it comes down to a guy who started in the NHL during Reagan's second term, and who might salvage Waddell's job by backing the Thrash into the playoffs... oh, I'm sorry, Mr. Mora, you asked a question?

Quote

It is official. The Thrashers called up Chris Chelios from AHL Chicago. He will join the team in Columbus in time for Thursday’s game and will be in the lineup.

Coach John Anderson said that a call-up was option with Christoph Schubert being out 3-5 weeks. The team’s current three-game losing streak and Chelios’ 25 years of NHL experience were the reasons for the move.

“I don’t like the way the team has been playing lately,” Thrashers GM Don Waddell said. “We are a desperate team right now and we have to get back on track soon. … With the situation now, our backs are against the wall. Bringing in a veteran presence made more sense than bringing in a younger guy.”

Anderson said Chelios’ leadership will be counted on.

“Certainly, he’s played a leadership role on championship teams,” Anderson said of the three-time Stanley Cup winner. ” That’s what we’ll use him for. We have lots of tools here and we are going to try to use every one of them, whatever it takes to make the playoffs.”

With that in mind, I'm wondering, have Herschel, Smoltzie, Nique, or Evander (not you, Kane... Holyfield) ever expressed interest as a goalie?

What happens to Josh in the last 5 mins?

Josh has been playing great lately, but there has been a disturbing pattern where his brain turns off in the last 5 mins of close games.
It started with that ill advised long jumper Josh took on the Hawks last possesion, with over 6 sec's left, about 2 weeks ago (See "What
was Josh Thinking?" thread). Lots of bad turnovers and bad shot selections by Josh have caused us to lose many of these games in
our last 12 or so games. Josh still doesn't seem to realize that a long jumper is a low percentage shot for him. If he makes a
few jumpers early on in the game, he seems to forget that he is a bad jump shot shooter. Josh just gets to the rim SO EASILY when he
wants to and I just can't understand why he will settle for a jump shot.......EVER???

Josh needs to play smart as games wind down and become a clutch player that we can trust when the game is on the line. As far as he has
come this season, this part of his game is still shaky. Who here wants the ball in his hands with 10 seconds left in the game? Anyone?
Didn't think so.
