Sund not looking to deal

Sund not looking to deal

Hawks GM Rick Sund said the core group of Hawks that has the team aiming for a Southeast Division title is the same group you can expect to see after the Feb. 18 trade deadline.

“People are talking about us as one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference, and that’s what we strive for,” Sund said today. “If there is something out there that will make us better, we’ll look at it. Do I anticipate (a deal)? No, I don’t.”

Sund wouldn’t get into specifics about trade chatter, but his indication that the Hawks’ core would stay together seems to rule out a trade involving Joe Johnson, who can become a free agent after the season. The other core players include Josh Smith, Jamal Crawford, Marvin Williams, Mike Bibby and Al Horford.

The Hawks are 32-17, tied with Boston for the third-best record in the Eastern Conference and one game behind Orlando for the Southeast lead.

“This is the time of year when everybody looks at deals,” Woody said. “But …

Well, duh. The Hawks only make moves every 18 months.

In other words they will not do anything to help the sorry rebounding or lack of depth. Worthless article.

His hands are tied- the Hawks already made their deadline move when they acquired Crawford. Seriously- the Hawks would have a tough time acquiring Kwame Brown without including Teague. The Hawks just don't have the ability to make minor adjustments to the roster.

A better bet is the Hawks using part of the MLE to sign a guy who gets bought out by another team.

Sund vs. Woody in a head butting contest would be scary.

Seriously though...with Vince Carter apparently hitting his stride I can't see us going much further than last year...unless it works out to where we make the ECFs. ORL looks like too big of a roadblock.

Barring any serious injuries it looks to me like Pau Gasol/Kobe against Vince Carter/Dwight again.

The real problem for the Hawks is that the other teams they are competing with all have the ability to easily upgrade the roster before the deadline. The Cavs and Celtics have all sorts of expiring contracts to use in a trade. The magic have guys like Bass and Gortat who teams would like to acquire. The Hawks just don't have the roster flexibility that the other teams do. And part of it is just that because the other teams are willing to pay the luxury tax then they simply have more pieces to work with.

Does this mean Diesel can stop posting his countless trade threads until next year? :)

VC could be in the worst slump of his career and still give the Hawks fits in the playoffs. He has always been a Hawks-killer and I don't think that's changing any time soon.

I think we should go after Haywood. We could use another Center. Zaza has been playing awful this yr.

As much as I like Zaza..I think you are right FTT...he simply isn't athletic enough to get the job done inside. He's not a bad player by any means (for a backup C)...he is what he is....average at best.

The Hawks don't have the trade fodder to work out a trade for Haywood. Unless you want hte Hawks to trade Marvin williams for him I just don't see how a deal could get done.

That's a good start.
Actually, Zaza has some value too.
