If we sign JJ and keep him it will cost the Hawks big $$$.
If we lose JJ for nothing, we will have no $$$ to sign another player.
Doesn't seem fair. For sure, lots of stuff going on in the NBA isn't what most would consider fair.
Example: Big Z and Cleveland. Smells fishey, doesn't it.
So, Atlanta has two choices. (1) Sign JJ for major $$$ (2) Lose JJ for nothing and have no $$$ to sign
another player.

..the only real option we have is a sign and trade. Sign Joe, trade him for a Kevin Martin.

The former was limited to four years, the latter can be up to six years. The distinction matters when judging Joe's intentions.

This is why I have never read much into his failing to get a deal done last season. He would have to be a moron to pass on a 5 or 6 year contract to sign a 4 year deal when his leverage this offeason is about 100X more than it will be in 4 years.

I was about to say something about that. If I remember correctly, the Hawks only offered ~$60 million over 4 years. That isn't the max that we could offer. Personally, I don't think Joe is looking for the max per year deal. It seems to me that Joe is looking for the max length deal and likely won't receive the maximum amount of money he could potentially make.
And to clarify, the Max that New York can offer is less than the Max that Atlanta can offer. Sund has shown that he won't bid against himself (the exception would be Ray Allen) so I don't think we even offer our Max deal.

Sund is going to have that flagship guy on this team.
So if that means doing something crazy like Al/Bibby/First for Amare or some other big... watch him do it.
