We got some toughness.

This team needs some toughness and by signing Thomas we got some. He and Horf are kinda in the same mold....

Check out this excerp from last year...

Quote

Most NBA players want to be tough. But ask anyone around the league and they’ll tell you few really are.

Etan Thomas?

Well, the Thunder’s newest big man on Sunday night got his first real chance to reveal to Oklahoma City which category he falls into. And against a bigger, more athletic Portland frontline, the 6-foot-10 Thomas proved legit.

The Thunder has found its enforcer, the guy who prevents nightly layup drills and makes opponents think a split second longer before dashing down the lane or mouthing off.

"He’s not a fake tough guy,” Thunder coach Scott Brooks said of Thomas after his team’s 83-74 loss to the Blazers. "He’s going to give you everything he has. We like that effort that he brings. He gives us a toughness that we like and use in a very positive way. He’s not going to back down from who’s on the floor.”

On the floor Sunday was Greg Oden, the Blazers’ 7-foot No. 1 overall pick in 2007. His backup, the 7-foot-1 inch Joel Pryzbilla, is one of the best rebounding centers around. The duo, along with starting power forward LaMarcus Aldridge, helped Portland finish last season as the best rebounding team in the league with a plus-5.4 rebounding differential.

Thomas clashed down low with all three, playing so effectively that Brooks could give starting center Nenad Krstic only 10 second-half minutes on a night the Thunder desperately needed Krstic’s shooting.

Thomas finished with four points, nine rebounds and one block in 26 minutes. But if ever there was a player whose value doesn’t show up in the stat sheet it’s Thomas.

He jostled with Oden the entire night, in the paint and in transition. And Thomas gave him a piece of his mind throughout, often with words but once with actions.

Sy is tough in a different way. Sometimes you can be tough by just outhustling your competition so much that frustration sets in. I think Sy is that guy on defense. Some people say that these are minor additions. I say that these additions mean a lot. We finally got away from the Joe Smith's and the finesse big men and we brought in an iron pipe tough big who can do the dirty work and will add toughness to our finessy exterior.

Gotta think Al loves the addition of Thomas. Think they could be a very dynamic duo

I think about (Etan Thomas) his in-team fights with Brendan Haywood. Training camp will be interesting for the "finessy" bigs on the roster. We will see...

Again Im liking both of these moves! I dont think we can get any better without adding another true superstar or one of our own becoming a true superstar! we are a solid solid team as of now!

Is Sy a tough guy? I haven't Sy-n enough to know for sure.

~lw3

(nvm, I just missed Diesel's assessment. Reading Is Fundamental...)

Different question: not a critique, but just curious why Sy could not make it onto L'Equipe Francaise for this FIBA toruney. Has he done any Eurobasket-type stuff yet?

Etan Thomas averaged 3 points and 2 rebounds last year. He is not an NBA player. No other team would want him... Which is why he was still unemployed in late August. If it wasn't for Atlanta Etan Thomas probably wouldn't have a job this year. Hope he is grateful for the welfare.

Nuff said.

I said this before and I still stand by it. Thomas is a nice addition. He isn't shaq or amare but he serves his role well. Role players are what makes nba teams successful. He gets rebounds.

So:

Bibby - JT
JJ - Crawford - Crawford
Marv - Mo - Sy?
Smoove - Powell
Horf - Zaza - Thomas - Collins - RandMo?

Is that our team right now? That's 15 guys

Two questions (not to hijack the thread):

1. Will we see a 10 man rotation

2. Who will be in the rotation consistently whether its 10 or 8?

Here's my guess:
So:

Bibby - JT
JJ - Jamal
Marv - Mo
Smoove - Horf
(Horf) Zaza - Thomas

Not sure where minutes will come from for young Crawford/sy/Powell/Collins. I'm thinking some kind of trade is happening.

Believe that Morris is in China and no longer a Hawk. But that still leaves 14. Someone is getting cut or the Hawks are setting up for a big trade. My guess is Z is going along with Crawford. That is just from looking at the numbers and who stacks up where.

Nonetheless, I do like the signing of Thomas. He brings toughness that is SORELY lacking from this team. Smith could use a huge does of what Thomas has going on. Marvin as well.

You mean that bum. By professional league standards that's what he is. For somebody so tough he sure spend a lot of time sitting on the bench licking his wounds. Without the Hawks he would probably have to actually go out and get a real job. As it is, he will sit on the bench most of the time and then get it handed to him when the Hawks play Orlando.

He had a grand total of 75 points and 64 rebounds last year. Yeah, that's really worth 750.000.

Dude is getting charity. Outside of Jamal Crawford, the rest of the bench could get together and form the all charity team.

:thumbsdownsmileyanim:

Perhaps some of us are looking at this wrong.

Question: Is Thomas a tough player? Yes of no.

Question: Is Thomas a big man? Yes or no.

Hawks desperately need a big, tough man to play inside. Not major minutes. Just a few minutes
on most nights. Does he qualify for this role?

Someone posted that, in the last several years, Thomas had his greatest games against the
Atlanta Hawks. If this is true, and I have no reason to doubt it, this will remove him from that
list of players who enjoy career games aganst our Hawks.

If you are expecting Thomas to be a major player, you will probably be dissapointed. He wasn't
signed for that role. Not at the price the Hawks are paying. Some players, Hawk players, are
paid mega bucks. They are stars. Compare the reletive pittance Thomas is signed for. He is
a roll player, nothing more.
