The model our owners say they are using
22 July 2010 - 12:43 AM
Gearon said he was using the Spurs and Pistons as his model for our Hawks. If that is the case then he must surely have noticed that neither of those two teams starting rosters were built solely through the draft. The only things constant about the Spurs championship teams were The Admiral and Duncan, then presently Duncan and Parker. The Pistons aquired Billups, Rasheed, and Big Ben via trades. To further emphasize this point, Kobe and until this season, Fisher were the only constants for L.A. Pierce is the only constant for Boston. Orlando is the same with Howard and Jameer.
My point is, sooner or later our owners are going to have to make a decision concerning who will be our constants. If they do not do this, then they are not following the models laid out by the Spurs and Pistons or any other championship contender in the history of the NBA for that matter. They are just offering lip service, to sell a product, that cannot compete at the highest level in the manner those two did.
If Gearon and company do not grow some balls and make some moves, they are just trying to bullsh*t a bullshitter IMO. -

A simple plan
12 July 2010 - 01:36 PM
I posted this in the "This must be the new plan" thread. I think it should get a thread of its own.
The longer we wait, and closer to the trade deadline we get, the more valuable Craws 10 million and Evans 4 million expiring gets. That is a lot of money coming off the books for the right team.
There is no reason to panic. I want to grab a big time player like CP3 or David Lee as bad as anyone here. But with all that money in expirings, and all the movement going on right now, who knows what will be available at the deadline? CP3 may be fed up with the Hornets by the deadline; or their owner may be fed up with his losses by then.
We just need to sign a good big with our MLE and see how things go from there. Craw and Evans cap space aint going anywhere unless we move it somewhere. All the worrying about Chilz is just this, fan hype. Chilz is not the second coming and no way would I rather have him than 14 million in expirings. If we give that away for 3 million in trade exceptions and a 2nd round pick, now then I would be pissed. That was pretty much all Chilz was worth and you can thank BK for that. Not Sund. -
If we resign JJ at the Max.
02 July 2010 - 11:38 AM
I have sad that if we resigned JJ it will be because we view him as the most important player on our team. In the same light that the Celtics viewed Pierce when they decided to keep him several years ago. To me this signing will indicate a commitment to becoming a 1st tier team. -
2nd round pick. One last thread for me
30 June 2010 - 07:12 AM
I know a lot of posters, and for good reason, think Whiteseide was our guy for upside. IMO though, it was White for upside and immediate help. AHF has shown us in numerous post how picks are better than vets when it comes to contract value vs production.
Here is my point in three parts.
Part one: White is a SG/PG; an obvious tweener at SG but good size and ball skills for a PG. His downside is somewhere along the lines of Flip and his upside has been compared to Stuckey. This is what draft sites are saying about him. He also said he had one of his best workouts with us; Chris Paul said this as well.
Part two: we have Bibby as our backup at PG and Teague as our starter. No guarantees this will be the case this season or in the future. We have Crawford as our starting SG should JJ leave, and our 6th man should he stay. No guarantee Crawford will be with us past this season. Then we have the rookie Crawford. Of all these players only the rookie is here guaranteed for three years.
Part three: Whites rookie contract could in the long run replace Bibby, or Crawford if his upside is Flip. Or two of them should he hit his upside as Stuckey. That is a rookie contract that replaces possibly Bibby as 1st PG off the bench, possibly Bibby and Craw as sixth man PG scorer off the bench, and insurance should Teague fail.
Now I would not have been too disappointed with Whiteside; but I honestly think White was the BPA at 31. And with the above short term concerns, plus the unknown that is JJ returning, White would not have been duplication. He would have been solid future value as a insurance policy. Which is why Dumars drafted him despite having just as many or more quality guards on his team.
Contracts he could replace in the near future should he succeed:
Bibby 6 million
Crawford 10 million
Insurance against Teague failing and possible future starting PG
This is what AHF is talking about when it comes to the value that rookie contracts have. It is also how Dumars and the Pistons play the game.
