I think Trae and DJM need to be split. Both guys had positive net ratings when the other was off the court and they were highly negative when both were in the court. I’ve never seen them synergize. One needs to go, imo. As always, you need a real return on the trade but I think we are in trouble if those two are starting next to each other to start next season.
I agree, but like you said, the trade has to make sense. We cant sell one of these guys for .50 cents on the dollar. My guess is they end up running it back.

Does shortening your rotation really help you? I'm not a big fan of that philosophy.

@bleachkit Trae's at 37.3% so what's my new profile picture?
Dang, you were so close! I'll need a day or two to think about it. Anybody have any suggestions? @kg01

Mo Gueye sighting soon?
One could only hope, but likely not until next season at this point. Why wouldn't he get minutes? We need front court depth.

It's a small sample size, but is the rest of the team really better without Trae? The offensive rating with Trae was 121. Without Trae, it's 112. That's a significant decrease in offensive efficiency.
If you care more about offensive rating than winning games, Trae is your guy.

I think the numbers support the idea that there's been more passing without Trae, but not the idea that guys are playing better without Trae. Clint played his best ball of the season, statistically anyway, in November December and then fell off a cliff in Jan/Feb before rebounding in March.
Bogi has been the exact same all year, posting nearly identical numbers every month. He had a slight dip in December and January but otherwise has been Mr. Reliable. His assist number is the only thing that has gone up without Trae, which is why I said the numbers support the idea that there's more passing. The guys are sharing the load more.
Vit has been a revelation but he didn't play with Trae.
Hunter, statistically, has been worse with Murray than with Trae, but not by a lot. He was sucking early in the year and then came on in February and March.
My point is not that the hawks aren't playing well, it's that this idea that you and others try to perpetuate after every win that the team is better off without Trae is nonsense. Guys are playing better late in the season. Are they playing better because Trae isn't out there? Not sure there's anything to suggest that other than a few fans bias.
Is Murray playing better than Trae, iyo?
Trae is ball dominant, and he has a tendency to pass to the bigs. I do think there may be some credence to the idea that wings have trouble getting into a rhythm with Trae. Also, our record and defensive numbers have improved without Trae. Not saying Trae's absence has been a scathing indictment, but has it been the validation many were expecting? No it absolutely not has.

Maybe he's forcing things without Trae. And I'd understand that. But then that begs the question, why would folks think we'd be better off without Trae if this is the Murray we get?
We are winning games. I guess Murray isn't afforded the same excuses Trae is.

That's why you dont trade young talented guys until you are sure they won't amount to much, like we did with Reddish who was clearly a bust. Clippers trading SGA is a prime example.

He has a bonafide go to shot. His middy is one of the best in the game.

I disagree.
You don't know how many guys until you actually try to built it and build it right. Sometimes it takes more than one iteration as you'll have hits and misses - there is patience, timing and a willingness to spend to make it happen
I think ideally Trae would be number 2 to a dominant wing or big. Easier said than done of course.

You ALWAYS need a player to build your team around.
I'm not sure Trae is worthy of that distinguished honor. How many guys in the NBA are truly worth building around?

People focus so much on Trae's upside, they ignore his downside.

So, we have a player on the roster that can take this team to the Finals with the right pieces around him, but it's not worth it because that player happens to be Trae Young??? What? The Hawks were a Trae ankle injury away from being in the Finals. Milwaukee had no answer for him, and the Suns certainly would have had no answer for him.
Ok you want make Trae the center of the universe and every decision is first and foremost, what does this player do for Trae? Ok go right ahead. To me that's not worth it. Im willing to bet the overwhelming majority of NBA general managers would think that's not worth it either.

We flipped core pieces for future picks and TPEs, Clint has regressed massively, Gallo got old. The emergence of JJ, Hunter figuring things out, and maybe Vit becoming something is the light at the end of the tunnel. If we want to roll with Trae and Murray (or have no choice) then I think our biggest hole atm is the C spot with Clint just not being good enough anymore. We need a defensive anchor, and OO just is too small.
It's easier to get specific top level role players than a superstar, which is what you are going to need to pair DJM with to ever make a run.
You think Trae and top level players gets it done? That's a tough sell for me.

You build with a guy like DJ, but you build around Trae. The Hawks did it in '20-'21 and the results were immediate. The Hawks were not a super team by any means. Heck, the guys they put around him weren't even All Stars. There's no reason that can't be duplicated. For some reason, management completely abandoned what worked.
That's kind of my argument. Maybe DJ isn't quite as good as Trae, but maybe he's not as limiting either. It seems like getting the fit right around Trae isn't easy. We need a certain type of center, a certain type of wing, etc. I'm not just not sure Trae is worth that type of all encompassing roster construction where every decision has him in mind. If the right Trae trade is out there, and that's a big if of course, I would strongly consider it.

We do got some things to work with. Two talented guards, but both play the same position. One might need to be traded, but of course that depends on the offers. We also have an athletic, versatile young forward.
