Well, it gives a couple of guys who probably haven't had much work lately jobs. So I guess it's good for something. For real, the original is not as bad as the haters say, but at it;s heart it's just a rip off of better movies and ground that QT has already covered as a movie maker who watched too many movies growing up. The people that don't like this movie tend to consider it one of the worst ever. Not that I agree, that's going overboard.

If you like this, you might like a movie called Smokin' Aces. Which I didn't like either.

Boondock Saints was an excellent movie. Smokin' Aces had a few good moments but is not in the same league as the original BS.

I don't agree with this assessment at all. Boondock Saints was a great movie while Smokin' Aces was only marginally good while at times bad. Not sure how a sequel will play over since the last one didn't leave much room for a logical sequel. Also it looks like William Defoe isn't on board and he really made the original great. We'll see how it plays out.

What makes the Boondock Saints so good? Mostly I'm indifferent on it. I watched it once about 2 years ago and I didn't see why it has so much hype. Outside of violence I didn't really see anything else. But I'm a sucker for revenge flicks. I think it's the fact that these movies try to be really cool and hip that really puts me off. I understand why the average movie goer likes it... It doesn't really require anything from them and it's got lots of violence. Finally, I think there is a reason director Troy Duffy has never made another movie. This movie is to crime drama what Hostel is to horror.

The only thing good about Smokin' Aces was seeing Alice Keys in hooker boots.

And there you go again with a the "average movie goer" comment. I really wonder if you think that you're opinion on movies is so much better than us "average" people.

What does it take for you to like a movie?

Going by the type of movies that pull in the big cash, I would say yes. I'm the middle guy. There are TONS of people that know more about movies than me. But the average movie goer that just pays to watch stuff like this and Bad Boys are not those people. As for the movie, if there is more to this movie than what I'm seeing, I'm all for coming to a better understanding of what I missed.

What is your obsession with comparing movies to Bad Boys? Boondock Saints is a hell of a lot better movie than Bad Boys and even then Bad Boys was at least entertaining in that it had some humor and hot chicks. Now Boondock Saints isn't among my all-time favorites but it was gritty and was well acted and from what I remember was fairly low budget. I wouldn't put it on the same level as Goodfellas but it's up there with let's say Casino and that's a movie that I liked as well.

What's next you gonna say that Reservoir Dogs was bad?? LOL

The acting wasn't bad, but Patrick Flannery is not exactly a top notch actor. He is a direct to video guy. I haven't seen Casino in a long time, but I seriously doubt it.

Again, is there anything I've missed about this movie?

Bad Boys 2 had hot chicks?

I think part of what people like about the movie is that it wasn't filled with A list actors. Just quality B actors who did a great job with their roles. I have seen Casino twice in the last week on one of the pay channels and while I haven't seen The Boondock Saints in a while I still consider them to be on the same level which is a solid 7/8 out of 10 for me.

How can I tell you what you've missed about the movie when I don't know what you got from it?

Not Bad Boys 2, the first movie.

Why I say Bad Boys I'm usually referring to the second one. I don't hate the first one... But the second one was far too overblown.

What I got from Boondocks that it's mainly just violence. I remember there being some subtext, but it was probably just for show mostly. This movie is mostly about violence. As i noted, I'm not someone that hates this movie. There are those that downright despite this movie... It also wasn't well received when it first came out if I'm not mistaken. I just didn't see anything that hooked me.

Here is what allmovie.com says:

Those who remember Troy Duffy, the bartender whose monstrous hubris torpedoed his deal with Miramax, may suspect that the writer/director's only film is an abomination, even before popping in the DVD. Everyone else will be on board after about two minutes. Duffy's bloated self-delusions inform every inch of the catastrophe known as The Boondock Saints, a ludicrous, woebegone vigilante movie set in Boston. It's as though the most clueless hack in the business attempted to make Pulp Fiction, as it includes a pair of hitmen who read scripture to their victims, as well as an accidental hair-trigger shooting, this time involving a cat. It would be something if Duffy imitated his heroes with any style, but the film is totally artless, as poorly scripted as it is sloppily mounted. Duffy introduces the entire all-male cast through freeze frames and title cards, but that hackneyed device is the most personality any character gets, including mobsters so criminally underdeveloped, they might as well be the good guys. The Irish brothers at the film's center are indistinguishable ciphers, especially since they dress in identical shades and black jackets, the bastard descendants of Tarantino cool. In a decidedly amoral and patently unbelievable spree of violence, the pair knocks off lowlifes with nary a concern for little details like needing to avoid getting caught. The characters Duffy bothers to give identifiable traits are even worse. They consist of a long-haired idiot (David Della Rocco) forever exploding with spittle and scenery-chewing vitriol, whom the audience is supposed to find sympathetic, and a gay FBI agent played by Willem Dafoe, who condescendingly taunts the Boston police through a protracted succession of crime scenes. The mental lapse that caused Harvey Weinstein, even for a moment, to consider letting this pretender near a camera, is shameful.

Pretty nasty there. The people that hate this movie really do HATE it. I'm largely disinterested. It's nowhere near bad enough to hate that badly.

I don't know anything about allmovie.com so I can't take much stock in what that person says.

I do know that after all these years the people have given the movie a 7.9 on IMDB and you won't find many movies that are 10+ years old that have been able to maintain such a high rating if it's not a good movie and that's with 70,000+ votes. Looking at the top 250 movies on IMDB #250 is an 8.0 so I'd imagine that BS wouldn't be far behind that. Considering the number of movies that come out every year that's fairly impressive. Personally I'm a lot more comfortable putting stock into what the people say about a movie than I am a movie critic who tries so hard to be clever in their review.

Okay I'm glad to hear that when you talk about Bad Boys you're referring to the 2nd one which I'll agree isn't very good at all.

What's wrong with a violence based movie? Just as I can appreciate a movie that is all about humor or action I can definitely appreciate one that's mostly violent. I think that people feel like they can relate to the characters in this movie as well which helps it to be liked.

One thing I'm really looking forward to in the sequel to BS is that Billy Connolly is in it and he's one of my favorite comedians and quickly becoming a decent actor as well.

I didn't say I agree with the reviewer either. he is far too harsh. Sometimes I agree with allmovie.com and sometimes I don't

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144117/board/thread/88463854?d=88704053&p=1#88704053

Some of the people there didn't let it either. Crash is also in the top 250 there. I don't hate that movie as bad as some people, but that's kinda crazy. If you like it, cool man. Got see the 2nd one and have a good time. Hopefully we'll agree on some movies sooner or later though.

Nothing wrong with violence based movies. AS I said, I love revenge movies. But I got the feeling from Boondocks that the director thinks he has a masterpiece on his hands. This movie I think wants to be more than it is. I like a movie like Death Sentence. Yeah, it's low brow and it doesn't try to be more than it is. And as I said, I got a guilty pleasure for those type of revenge flicks. But I know they ain't good movies in the traditional sense.
