DREAM FALL AGAIN

Gray Mule

Recommended Posts

Our Atlanta Dream looked unbeatable.  This was going to be that team

that went into the championship round of the playoffs and brought home

the prize.

Then suddenly, or so it seemed, the Dream became quiet ordinary.  They

begin each game in a sleepwalk mode, find themselves in a big hole, then

attempt to overcome the odds and pull out the victory.

Our head coach is out on medical leave but he didn't take the talent of the

Atlanta Dream with him.  They are the same group of players.  But they can't

get a shot to fall and our opponent can't seem to miss.

HELP!  WE HAVE FALLEN AND WE CAN'T GET UP!

It seems to happen every year. No reason to hit the panic button yet, 3 of the 4 losses were very close - we could have been 3-1 instead of 0-4.  We've won a lot of close games, so some of it is probably just perverse luck.  The start against the Sky was terrible, but they did come back.  In the end, the team is not unbeatable and not as dominant as they looked.

Overall, its just no one is really play very well, except Tip, who has had a string of pretty good games.  No team plays well an entire season, or badly for a whole season.  Shots falling is a bit of luck and no matter what you do one defense sometimes the other teams shots do fall.

Part of the problem is lack of depth in the frontcourt and a bit too much depth at the point.  But those are minor issues - Tip covers for Angel when she's out and Shoni and Jasmine can both play 1 or 2.  It seemed to me that Coopers game plan was to play all 3 of our PG's in the first 3 quarters then have the one playing best finish out the 4th.  Worked when at least on of them was playing well, but against the Mystics none of them played well.

If Milton-Jones had stayed healthy it would have helped in the frontcourt.  I don't quite see why Thompson doesn't play more - she seemed to do pretty well when she did play.

All that aside we need to win the next game against the Sun.  A big problem in the past was that once the wheels came off they stayed off for a long time (e.g. 3-9 start a few years ago, 6 game losing streaks, and the collapse after the 10-1 start last year.)  It will be a test of this team to see if they can turn it around, esp. now when the schedule is getting tough and we have a western road trip to go.

I'm also sure that Cooper's health is a concern to the team.  Not sure how much of the problem is the anxiety of his health.  They have made it sound like no big deal, but when dealing with cancer there is no such thing as no big deal.

Talent wise, Chicago is probably the best team in the east in year, and maybe on par with Minnesota and Phoenix.  However, they are like the fast sports car that is always in the shop.  Now, it seems like most all of the critical parts are working at the same time (though Breland is a question mark, but she didn't start the last game).  So its going to be a battle for sure.
