TANKWATCH GAME OF THE NIGHT:

Phoenix at Memphis: This one could be for all the ping-pong balls! Or, at least a lot of them.

Tyson Chandler is sitting this one out for the Suns. As for the Conless Grizzlies, Chandler Parsons might hurt something just trying to sit, while Reke is trying to play off the bench despite an illness. No JaMychal Green (ankle), either.

Absolutely incredible how awful Orlando has been since they started 8-4. Going 6-30 since then is absurd.

It was amazing to me they started 8-4 at all.  They looked like bottom feeders on paper before the year started.  Was really hoping they'd be better.

TANKWATCH GAME OF THE NIGHT:

Brooklyn at New York: The Nets are 0-8 in their own division, and worse yet, three of those losses came against the only other Atlantic foe not in the East's Top-8. Can Brooklyn get off the schneid, tonight, against a Knicks team that beat them (w/o Timmy Hardaway) by 15 at Barclays just two weeks ago? Playing at MSG, New York has the best home record of any Bottom-7 team in either conference. Will all the sideshow news regarding several of their bigs (Noah, Willy, Kanter) prove to be a distraction?

We almost had a two-fer! A tank-supporting Magic win, and a Rockets-pick-supporting loss!

Magic have the Competitank at full-sprint now! Near-miss road losses at Milwaukee, Washington, Boston, Cleveland (home and road), Indiana, and now Houston, all in the past few weeks! Get well soon, Vucevic!

Kangz won, though, so that helps!

TANKWATCH GAME OF THE NIGHT:

Dallas at Phoenix: Something's gotta give! The Mavs (4 straight Ls) were holding out hope they could somehow stay just below the playoff line until Seth Curry got back, but now they've given up hope on that development altogether. Not much has gone right for the Suns (5 straight Ls), either, but at least they have this...

#PureMagic! Thanks, O-town! No Gordon, no Isaac, no Vooch... no problem!

Memphis sorta let Indiana off the hook late. Would've been nice!

Brooklyn giving the Sixers a run! Nice!

And one of Dallas/Phoenix will be a winner!

HAWKS TRAGIC NUMBER: 23 (Mike and LeBron’s number! Must be a good sign…)

TANKS A LOT…

Dallas Mavericks (0.5 games ahead) – The Hawks may end of the season behind a few of these teams, but you can sense most of their fans aren’t quite as thrilled about the prospect as ours are. That’s because of what I’ve diagnosed as Tank Fatigue. The onset comes just as they realize the lottery rookie they’ve sought and prized all last year isn’t enough of a savior to make their team postseason-quality. Dennis Smith, Jr. has been as good as advertised, and all anyone could expect for a #9 overall pick from last year’s rookie crop. But he was supposed to be starting alongside Seth Curry, whose injury has kept him off the floor all season and may continue to do so. Also shelved is young pivot Nerlens Noel, who was supposed to mature in his second season. The two players who have stepped up the most on the club, J.J. Barea and Yogi Ferrell, are small-ish guards that are hard to pair with Smith. Look at the two vets to be trade targets, along with Dwight Powell, the backup forward who has seen his minutes ramp up a bit lately. Dirk can confirm for DSJ: carrying a franchise as a rookie is a tough business!

Chicago Bulls (3.0 games ahead) – Scrubbing most of what I was about to say here, as it looks like Nikola Mirotic is on the move! Alas, while Mirotic is held out, Lauri Markannen is granted personal leave, Zach LaVine gets back up to speed, and Kris Dunn sits with injuries, the collective resolve has worn as thin as the roster depth. Which Lopez will get shipped out sooner: Robin, or his Laker Bro Brook?

Philadelphia 76ers (10.5 games ahead) – Atlanta’s Tragic Number would probably be in the teens right now if the eighth-seeded Sixers would string some wins together. But they’ve been sliding in the wrong direction with J.J. Redick (fibula) and Jerryd Bayless (wrist) sidelined. Both returned last night, but it wasn’t enough to out-duel Brooklyn, Philly’s third-straight loss. The Processing was supposed to have concluded by now, but with wannabe-All-Star Ben Simmons and Joel Embiid turning over the ball at ridiculous rates, with Markelle Fultz not ready to debut anytime soon, and with a reloaded Detroit team looking to make a charge up the standings, look for Philadelphia to be a buyer as the trade deadline approaches. In their search for veteran shooting and defensive help for the bench, they’ll seek out anyone interested in taking the development of second-year swingman Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot off their hands.

TANK-BUSTERS!

Utah Jazz (7.5 games ahead) – Break up the Jazz! Even with Thabo Sefolosha injured and Joe Johnson seeking out a stage-left exit, they’re making a mad-dash for the playoffs. With Rudy Gobert finally healthy, they ran Golden State completely off the floor on Tuesday night, thanks to gritty defense and the absurdly hot shooting of another Joe… Joe Ingles, who’s jingling the nets to the tune of 55.8 3FG% in his last seven games. With Mirotic out of the picture as a trade target, one is left to wonder if they’ll stand-pat or continue to shop Derrick Favors around. Rodney Hood has been one hot trade name, but with his return from a leg-contusion injury unspecified, Utah may be looking instead to sell Alec Burks and Raul Neto, the latter potentially losing floor time once Dante Exum returns from the All-Star Break.

Milwaukee Bucks (13.0 games ahead) – Bust up the Bucks! Unlike the Sixers, the Bucks are rolling in the aftermath of J-Kidd’s firing. GM Jon Horst said, “It just felt like we were standing, when we should be climbing.” Now, replacement coach Joe Prunty is 4-0 running the show full time, an encouraging sign although those wins were mostly against lower-rung teams, including the Sixers without a rested Embiid. Sterling Brown’s parking-lot tasing incident only seemed to serve as a spark for the turnaround: Buck Lives Matter! Better yet, reinforcements are on the way for the Greek Freak (last 3 games: 33.0 PPG, 13.3 RPG, 7.0 APG), as Jabari Parker makes his season debut tomorrow! Parker’s abrupt injury departure from the NBA floor last season coincided with the long-awaited return of Khris Middleton. Those three core players will be back together, but Parker will be minutes-restricted, and Eric Bledsoe is fighting through a sore ankle. Can that team ever get their full complement together?

Dallas at Sacramento: Licking their wounds after a Competitank late loss to the Warriors, can the Kangz pull it together one night later, and stop a Mavs team that's looking to break their 5-game losing streak? Featuring a first-ever NBA battle of 2017 lotto prizes: DSJ versus D-Fox!

From this weekend, ring the Tank Bell for...

* Detroit, who moved within a game of the 8-seed with a home win over Miami. Buoyed by the Blake trade, the Pistons are going for four straight tonight at Little Caesars against Portland.

* Utah, who got stuck at the airport, due to the team plane having mechanical problems, the night before arriving in San Antonio, but went ahead and upended the Spurs later that day. The Jazz continue their trek toward the playoff line today in New Orleans.

* The Lakers, who won their second-straight with a big win at Oklahoma CIty! They'll get another shot at the Thunder, at Staples Center on Thursday. And Lonzo may be back for that one!
