TANKWATCH GAME OF THE NIGHT:

Phoenix at Lakers: Both teams have shot down any rumors of major moves ("minor" might mean Jared Dudley or something like that), so these rosters are pretty much who they're rolling with going forward. No Lonzo yet! Say, Magic, how do you feel about Devin Booker? He sits tonight, and Marquese Chriss will also be replaced by Dragan Bender.

No! "Let the Sun Shine! Let the Sun Shine In... The Sun Shine In!"

TANKWATCH GAME OF THE NIGHT:

Brooklyn at Detroit: Nets are further hampered by the Nene-induced concussion injury to Caris LeVert. On the road, they're trying to stem their three-game skid versus the Pistons, who still aren't drawing fans but are on a five-game winning streak. A win for Detroit not only moves them closer to Philly in the 8-seed, it shaves the Hawks' Tragic Number down a little further.

HAWKS TRAGIC NUMBER: 18 (Too young to drink. Old enough to vote!)

YOU SAY YOU A TANKSTA…

New York Knicks (5.5 games ahead) – Not sure this doesn’t count as tampering, but can our Hawks send a care package Junior Hardaway’s way? I’m also not sure I.T. had the NBA’s worst week. Critical errors leading to an epic last-minute loss to his prior team over the weekend. A re-injured shin. Mere moments after getting hurdled and winding up on the wrong end of everybody’s NBA Play of the Year candidate. Somehow even more unsettling? 16.7 3FG%, on over five attempts per game. Yes, his per-game scoring is at a career-high, but his efficiencies are the lowest since he was getting harangued by Phil, and the scoring is not getting any better (last five games: 7.2 PPG in 30+ MPG, 21.7 FG%) as he remains defensively negligent. Oh, and the one Knick that Timmy could hide behind is gone for the season with a torn ACL. THJ returned from a tibia-stress injury in mid-January after missing 20 games, and one wonders if he was rushed back a little too soon for a playoff push. Well, New York can scrap those postseason dreams, as we’ve got a certified tank rival now.

Phoenix Suns (0.5 games ahead) – This was going to be a bad team even before Alan Williams and Brandon Knight got shelved, before Eric Bledsoe went AWOL and got shipped out for a Greg Monroe rental. Now, they’re entrenching themselves as the biggest flunkie of the NBA’s eyeball-test, with both Devin Booker (ribs, hip) and Tyler Ulis (back spasms) sidelined with injuries. Did the Orlando Magic do Atlanta a solid by helping with the Suns’ depleted backcourt (anybody remember the days when they had way too many)? Or, will Ewing Theory take hold, with Elfrid Payton’s addition only subtracting from the Magic’s loss column? Either way, Earl Watson was out somewhere this week enjoying that near 50-point loss to the Kawhi-less Spurs.

Miami heat (12.0 games ahead) – Just over a week ago, Sports Illustrated made an argument for Erik Spoelstra to win NBA Coach of the Year, this after his heat posted a 10-5 mark in January. But a five-game skid has ebbed that tide. Injuries to Dion Waiters, Kelly Olynyk, and Rodney McGruder shouldn’t create this much of a setback. Bringing Dwyane Wade back is great for PR and ticket sales (you, too, Luke Babbitt), but Wade won’t be of much help if he’s eating away at Tyler Johnson or Wayne Ellington’s playing time. In the aftermath of Olynyk’s shoulder injury, Coach Spo is only now figuring out the “Wham-Bam” frontcourt pairing of Hassan Whiteside and Bam Adebayo might pay dividends from time to time. The heat went from sitting in front of Washington and Milwaukee as a four-seed in the standings, to being just 1.0 game away from handing Phoenix another lottery pick. Well, at least those Miami Vice unis are fire.

Brooklyn Nets (1.5 games ahead) – No More! Mr. Nice Guy! Kenny Atkinson is no more pleased with the direction of his club as the world is by the direction of the Cavs’ Netspick. Yes, they’re ravaged by injuries, too (Caris LeVert, RHJ, Quincy Acy), and D’Angelo Russell is shedding the rust. But Coach Kenny wants his team’s hustle on the floor to be its fingerprint. Now that they’re sticking around, he wants veterans like DeMarre Carroll and Acy to get more demonstrative with their younger teammates, so he won’t have to blow so many gaskets.

TANK-BUSTERS!

Los Angeles Lakers (6.5 games ahead) – It’s gotta be fun when your old college teammate becomes your head coach. For Luke Walton, coaching up Channing Frye will be the least awkward effect of Thursday’s blockbuster deal. He intends to start LaVar’s kid (once he heals up, after the Break) with Isaiah Thomas, to quell the expelled ex-Cavalier’s insistence that he’s nobody’s sixth-man, no matter the circumstance. While that should minimize the hot-takes flying in from Lithuania, how well will that setup work out on the floor? Swimmingly well, we can only hope. Meanwhile, that other lead guard, Josh Hart, is rebounding like crazy, Brandon Ingram and Julius Randle have masked Kyle Kuzma’s struggles, the Lakers are going for their fifth-straight win, and Brook Lopez, still there for now and getting benched in fourth-quarters, needs his blankie.

PistonsHitsTollivermp4-3527785.576x324.j

Detroit Pistons (11.0 games ahead) – “Do something!”, Stan Van Gundy implored his management team. And do something they did. Blake Griffin is undefeated as a Piston, and while he has led the team in scoring it’s his role as a catalyst that’s paying off for Detroit, who was once dead-in-the-water but is now threatening Philly and Indy for a playoff spot, with Reggie Jackson returning after the Break. Andre Drummond has been boarding like a madman (101 rebounds during Detroit’s 5-game win streak), while Stanley Johnson is displaying more assertiveness. And while many wondered where the shooting will come from, Anthony Tolliver and Reggie Bullock (each >50% from 3-point range) say hello. The long-term prognostications haven’t been encouraging, but the early returns certainly have been.

How about both!  Payton helps Phoenix's backcourt exceed their baseline and the Magic step up after seeing Elfrid shipped off.  Win/win for the Hawks!

Mine is climbing from the cellar with meaningless wins!  You are next on my list with your .5 game lead over me.

TANKWATCH GAME OF THE NIGHT:

Orlando at Chicago: The franchise that got #1 picks back-to-back (and got Dwight later), versus the one that had MJ fall into their lap (and got D-Rose later). Hmm... what to do, what to do... Ah well, flip a coin. Hey, Portis, just try not to kill any Magic PGs. They only got a couple left!
