Premium Member Popular Post sturt Posted July 16, 2018 Premium Member Popular Post Report Share Posted July 16, 2018 We left our house on the morning of Sunday, August 27, 2017, evacuating to Baton Rouge, suspicious that we might end up with maybe as much as 6 inches of water as a result of Hurricane Harvey, and not wanting to have to wade around in flood water that naturally is a mix of all kinds of chemicals and stuff that belongs in the sewer. We came back to our house on Tuesday, September 5, and discovered the water line had been at almost exactly 5 feet. We got to work right away "mucking and gutting," but it was only two of us, and perhaps needless to say, it was some of the most miserable days of our lives--both because of how much there was to do and how little it seemed we could actually get done on our own, and because of the avalanche of big decisions that normally one might make over weeks that had to be made within days if not hours if not minutes. Not to mention, you might've heard, Texas is hot. The great part of the story is that angels DID appear relatively quickly though. First, my wife's employer organized crews from upstate to come down and help folks like us. We were the happy recipients of help from two guys from a Ft. Worth facility whose work on Saturday and Sunday was more like that of a half-dozen. Second, contractor friends from my hometown (Huntington, WV) showed up just a few days later, and spent a whole week. In fact, over the coming months, they would make not one, not two, but THREE treks to SE Texas to work on our behalf. (Finding a contractor who you could trust was a huge problem for many, but not us.) Blessing is an understatement. Up until January, we were inching toward getting the house back into shape to live there. But then came word of an appealing job offer, with the caveat that we would have to move to the neighboring county if I accepted it. And that's what we decided to do. With that, of course, came a whole new roller coaster ride--selling a house that had been flood damaged for all that we could hope to get out of it, and then, finding and buying a house... all the while, also trying to get settled into the new job and do it well. You know, we live in a nation where we have assets/benefits that others don't. I was paying attention to the news about the time Harvey struck us, and on the other side of the world, families in Nepal were decimated by flooding there. People who know me know I'm a conservative politically, but I have to appreciate the fact that, it may not have been the most smooth ride dealing with FEMA and dealing with SBA, but that we were able to fall back on government assistance at all also was a huge blessing. So, I'm not going to do the deep dive into what all happened with that element of the journey, much of it pretty frustrating in one sense. All that really matters is, this Thursday, that journey comes to an end. It is a great relief to say we will finally close on our new house in Dayton, TX. And 326 days (if I calculated right) into this, we are finally back to a real sense of normalcy. Thank God (literally). Appreciate whatever prayers there have been specifically for us or just for Harvey victims in general.
