Peachtree Hoops: Hawks reportedly come to agreement with Brandon Goodwin on Two-Way contract

Atlanta’s Two-Way slots are filled.

The Atlanta Hawks have filled their second Two-Way spot (joining St. Joseph’s wing Charlie Brown) after an agreement with Brandon Goodwin was reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

Guard Brandon Goodwin has agreed to a two-way NBA deal with the Atlanta Hawks, league sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium. Goodwin played in 16 games for the Nuggets last season.

Goodwin spent last season with the Denver Nuggets on a Two-Way contract, appearing in 16 games for the Western Conference contender and spending most of the season in the G League. In 27 G League games spread between the Memphis Hustle and the Iowa Wolves (since Denver does not have their own G League team), he scored 21.3 points per game and notched 6.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists. He had a very good year shooting the ball, knocking down 38.3% of his three-point attempts and nearly 55% of his two-pointers. It should be noted that Goodwin was not a particularly prolific three-point shooter during his college days, so last year may have been something of a positive blip in that department.

The 6’2 point guard is a product of Norcross High School before playing at UCF and Florida Gulf Coast in his pre-NBA days. His exit from UCF was acrimonious at best, as he was arrested, and later left the program, over accusations stemming from a bike theft during his time with the Knights. However, no punishment came down as a result on the arrest. He flourished at Florida Gulf Coast and put his name on the NBA radar with Atlantic Sun Player of the Year honors in 2017-18.

For Atlanta, Jaylen Adams’ departure from the club created a hole in the reserves for a point guard, as the team previously had just Trae Young under contract as a traditional point guard and Evan Turner projected for primary backup duty. Since the advent of the Two-Way contract in 2017, this is the third year in a row the Hawks have used one of their two Two-Way spots on a point guard: first it was Josh Magette in 2017-18, then Adams in 2018-19 before he was elevated to the full roster, and now it’s Goodwin for 2019-20.

Atlanta has two full roster spots remaining with just 13 players under full NBA contract. Goodwin and Brown round out the Hawks’ Two-Way spots and the pair will spend a lot of time being shuffled back and forth between the Hawks and the College Park Skyhawks, the team’s G League affiliate opening up play in southern Atlanta this season.
