Turnovers plague Hawks in third straight preseason loss.

The Atlanta Hawks traveled to Miami to take on the Heat for their third of five preseason contests. The Hawks were looking for their first win of the preseason following home losses to New Orleans and Orlando last week. The trip kicks off a very long stay away from State Farm Arena for Atlanta, who will not appear in front of their home crowd again until October 26.

The Hawks started Trae Young, Cam Reddish, De’Andre Hunter, John Collins and Alex Len. Justice Winslow, Tyler Herro, Jimmy Butler, Meyers Leonard and Bam Adebayo started for Miami.

In the early going, Reddish delivered with a pure jumper.

Miami rookie Tyler Herro was scorching the nets from opening tip, scoring the first 14 points for the Heat in the first 4:30.

Scoring as a whole was rampant, as the Hawks led the Heat 20-17 at the 6:29 mark in the first. Young was hot early as well, scoring nine points on 4-for-5 shooting in the opening moments.

The Hawks led at the conclusion of a high-scoring first quarter, 34-32. Young led all Atlanta scores with 11 points while Herro led Miami with 14. Collins was also involved and aggressive early, scoring eight points in the opening period to bounce back from his poor performance in the team’s second preseason contest.

The scoring slowed heavily in the early minutes of the second, with the Hawks only scoring four points in the first 6:44 of the quarter, with zero points between the 8:55 and 5:16 marks. The Heat went on a 18-2 run as a result leading to a Hawks timeout at the 3:19 mark, when they trailed 55-40.

The Hawks made a quick 9-2 to climb back within eight before the break, trailing Miami 49-57 at halftime. Young led scorers for Atlanta with 15 points to go along with 4 rebounds, two assists and three turnovers in 15 first half minutes. Collins had ten points and two rebounds in his fifteen minutes.

Hunter did not score in his 15 first half minutes, but looked good with the ball in his hands and led the team in assists at the break with three.

Reddish struggled a bit in the first half, committing a couple of careless turnovers and taking a pull-up three in transition in what was a suboptimal second-quarter sequence for the rookie.

Herro led first half scorers for Miami with 20 points. Adebayo contributed five points, seven rebounds, two assists and a block, controlling the paint effectively.

The turnover plague that has bugged Atlanta this preseason (56 last week in two games) continued, as the Hawks had 12 giveaways in the first half, leading to 13 points for the Heat.

Atlanta struggled again out of the half, as Miami outscored them by 14 in the third quarter.

The Hawks seemingly fell apart every time Young came off of the floor and weren’t exactly clicking on all cylinders as a unit when he was out there. Young had 23 points, five rebounds, four assists and seven turnovers in the first three quarters. Turnovers continue to be an issue in the preseason for Young, who did not play in the fourth.

The Hawks were unable to make any sort of rally in the final period, as Lloyd Pierce began to unload more of the bench after playing only 10 players in the first three quarters of the game. Miami held control of the game until the very end, winning 120-87.

Turnovers again ruined any chance Atlanta had of getting a win, as the Heat scored 27 points on 26 Hawk turnovers. Atlanta also struggled from three-point-range, making only 8-of-31 attempts from deep.

Collins played five minutes of the fourth and 27 overall, finishing the game with 14 points and seven rebounds on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor.

Reddish finished with two points in 20 minutes on 1-for-7 from the floor (0-for-3 from three-point-range) in what was a tough night for the rookie. De’Andre Hunter finished with four points and four assists in 25 minutes, and actually played well despite struggling to the tune of 2-for-8 from the floor.

Bembry finished with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor in 25 minutes in what was another solid outing for the veteran.

Parker had nine points (4-for-9) and ten rebounds in 25 minutes.

Herro finished with 23 points to lead all Heat scoring. Adebayo added 15 points, ten rebounds, four assists and three blocks while dominating the paint in his 26 minutes.

The Hawks will be back in action Wednesday night from Madison Square Garden for a matchup with the Knicks, before finishing their preseason schedule Thursday night in Chicago against the Bulls.
