On to the regular season.

The Atlanta Hawks found themselves in Chicago on Thursday night, completing the second half of a preseason back to back. As a result, Lloyd Pierce and company made the decision to sit a couple of their main guys, with John Collins (flu-like symptoms) and Cam Reddish (right hip tension) joining Kevin Huerter, Allen Crabbe and Chandler Parsons on the shelf.

The Hawks supplemented their starting lineup with DeAndre’ Bembry in favor of Reddish and Parker instead of Collins.

The opening action was predictably slow, but the Hawks got some great minutes out of rookie stud De’Andre Hunter who made a couple nifty passes early.

Hunter has really shown a nice ability to make all of the simple passes as well as some advanced looks that you normally would see out of a guard. Hunter also made his presence known with a fantastic finish on the run in heavy traffic.

Atlanta product Wendell Carter Jr. gave the Hawks fits during his first quarter stint on both ends of the floor. On the defensive end, he emphatically blocked a layup attempt by Brandon Goodwin.

On the offensive end, Carter proceeded to detonate all over Alex Len. In large part due to Carter’s first quarter play, the Bulls found themselves up four at the end of the first quarter of their “dress rehearsal”.

In the second quarter, Trae Young made his second appearance of the night, but the Hawks play got pretty sloppy as they turned the ball over nine times in the first 14 minutes.

The second quarter was so bad that the best highlight on the Hawk’s Twitter page was a picture of Vince Carter’s shoes...

Atlanta was only able to produce six points in the opening six minutes of the third quarter, but were able to keep things close thanks to Chicago being bad offensively.

Trae Young scored five of those points and both scores were difficult attempts.

The Hawks found some offense when Hunter and Parker re-entered the game about midway through the second quarter. With just under six minutes to go, Hunter hit a three pointer to spark a mini-run to close the quarter that included a flurry of 11 points from Parker.

The Bulls were +5 in the second quarter, and led by nine at the end of the first half in what was not exactly an aesthetically pleasing 24 minutes of basketball.

The second half began with Goodwin and Carter taking the spots of Young and Hunter, who started the game but appeared in only limited work.

Goodwin was passable at point guard for the opening minutes, but was replaced by Tahjere McCall before the eight-minute mark of the third. Goodwin did have one really nice take to the basket, hitting a tough floater in the lane over the Bulls’ bigs.

The first half of the third quarter was not particularly pretty for either team, as the Hawks unloaded the bench and the Bulls struggled to make shots. Charlie Brown found his way onto the court and hit a little jumper for his first points of the night and, in short order, he was joined by the likes of Armoni Brooks.

Chicago finally pulled away in the latter half of the third quarter as Zach LaVine took over against the Hawks fourth string point guards and began scoring at will.

The final quarter of the pre-season (and, really, most of the game) was some pretty bad basketball. The Hawks ran with their G Leaguers for most of the quarter with some Alex Len mixed in for depth.

Len had a game that he would soon like to forget as he went 2-of-10 from the field with just four points and four turnovers.

Jabari Parker led the Hawks in scoring with 15 points on 60% shooting in 22 minutes of action. Trae Young added 11 of his own on 50% shooting in 17 minutes, while not playing in the second half at all.

The Hawks were outscored 20-5 in the opening 4:23 of the fourth as the deficit eventually swelled to 30 points. Atlanta would go on to lose by a final score of 111-93 to conclude their pre-season with a (meaningless) record of 1-4.

The Hawks will travel to Detroit on Thursday, Oct. 24 for the regular season opener at Little Caesars Arena with the Pistons. Set your schedule accordingly.
