Shouldn't have picked Cam

Clarke is 23 years old so we all expected he would come out pretty strong.  He has been better than I expected but is shooting well over his head right now.  He isn't going to sustain 42% from 3pt range, 92% from the line and 64% from 2pt range.  I also am a bit skeptical on his rebound rate.  But he has definitely looked good so far.

Cam is 20 and raw, which we all knew.  

I wouldn't change the pick, however, because I am optimistic that Reddish has a very high ceiling and his defense gives him a reasonable floor.  I'm not sure Clarke will be a long-term starter but in this small sample size he looks like he should be a contributing part of the rotation for a long time.  I'm just not sold on his ceiling being close to Reddish's.  We didn't need to draft a guy who could maximize performance this season - we needed to draft someone to be a long-term core player.  I still like Reddish's potential for that better.

LP is exactly right about cam so far...defensively he’s been tremendous especially being a rookie but offensively he just hasn’t yet adjusted...eventually it will all slow down for him.

the kid isn’t stupid he’s just overthinking a lot right now on that end of the floor

I think he and everyone else recognizes that. He spent the entire offseason rehabbing from surgery, so offseason on that couldn't be a priority.  When you hear a guy say 'it feels great to play without pain' (which he did in college) in a preseason game, some leeway is expected.

Improving his body and handle will be what the focus will be in the 2020 offseason. All he has to focus on right now is continue to play defense and pick his spots on offense.

Besides....10 NBA games.

There were like 20 rookies that looked better than Trae at this time last year. Let's hold our horses on making declarations on rookies when they are just starting to learn what the NBA is.

I still like Cam a lot. Just gotta get thrrough the growing pains. I think a lot of us have been spoiled because of how good Trae was his rookie year. That's pretty much an outlier for any rookie. Gotta let the young guys develop before we jump to any conclusions.

2 years ago, Cam was in high school.  1 year of college, injured and playing hurt most of the season.  Had surgery in the summer to correct injury.  Now, playing without pain.  

Our 20 year old has a very high ceiling and someone wishes we had drafted someone else?  Hawks are NOT in the "win it all this season" mode.  Rather, we are in the win and learn and grow together season.

Going back to Duke. I have never seen Cam just go off. Just dominate a game where he's unstoppable. I just wonder if he's even capable of it.

Truth.  Young rookies are usually going to struggle.  You draft them knowing that this is likely.  Paul George had a pretty similar rookie line except that he shot the ball much better:

Cam 5.5 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.1 spg, 0.2 bpg

PG 7.3 ppg , 3.7 rpg, 1.1 apg, 1.0 spg, 0.4 bpg

I don't know who the pick should have been, but for me Cam's historically low FG efficiency was disqualifying for the 10th pick. So far, he's being outplayed by a number of players taken after him. Still early of course.
