A strong performance on the road.

It was a quiet week for the Atlanta Hawks, with only two games in a seven-day period and a three-day hiatus from game action. That came to an end on Sunday evening in Charlotte, however, with the Hawks taking care of business in a big way with a 122-107 road win over the Hornets.

The evening began in encouraging fashion, with Trae Young finding Damian Jones for a dunk on the opening possession.

Young was in an immediate groove, knocking down a pair of threes in the opening minutes.

Later in the quarter, Atlanta reeled off a 9-0 run — with a trio of threes from Young, Jabari Parker and Kevin Huerter — to take a 14-8 lead. The rest of the first period belonged to Charlotte, though, with the home team using an 11-3 run to take a 27-24 lead after 12 minutes.

The second quarter opened with a flourish for the Hawks, with Bruno Fernando throwing down a dunk to bring Atlanta back within three.

Though the Hawks trailed by as many as seven points, the team battled for the rest of the half. One high point was a sequence from DeAndre’ Bembry, where he turned an impressive defensive contest into an easy basket on the other end.

In the latter half of the second quarter, the Hawks put together 7-0 run that knotted the score at 44-44 and, while the Hornets did take a two-point edge into halftime, Atlanta performed reasonably well.

After the break, that positive mojo continued in the form of an 11-4 run for the Hawks, taking their largest lead of the game to that point at 62-57.

Parker and Cam Reddish scored 12 combined points in the first four minutes, with the offense clicking in a big way. The Hornets did respond with a 9-2 run of their own but, on cue, Atlanta put together a 7-1 spurt — capped by a three from Young — to force a timeout with a 73-69 lead.

Charlotte briefly stabilized things but the Hawks kept coming, using an 8-0 run to take full control. The spurt ended with threes by Alex Len Carter, with the latter prompting an eruption from Atlanta’s bench.

The Hawks took a five-point lead to the fourth quarter, but the visitors weren’t satisfied. A 12-2 run all but ended the game, with Atlanta taking a 100-85 lead behind a barrage of three-pointers.

All told, the Hawks set a season-high with 18 three-point connections and, while Charlotte did slash the margin to ten at one point, a late surge never materialized on the way to a decisive victory.

As usual, Young was the offensive engine for the Hawks, finishing with 30 points, nine assists and six rebounds. However, he was flanked by strong contributions up and down the roster, including from Parker (19 points, seven rebounds), Carter (season-high 17 points), Len (13 points, 10 rebounds) and Crabbe (11 points).

After leaving Charlotte, the Hawks will head to Miami to begin a road back-to-back on Tuesday evening. Stay tuned.
