NBA: Atlanta Hawks at Charlotte HornetsJim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

Let’s take a look at where the Hawks rank in this week’s power ranking roundup.

There were a few silver lining for the Atlanta Hawks this week. For one, the Hawks aren’t the worst team in the league considering they managed to win a couple of games. This is a long season and a good reminder that this is a young roster still trying to find their footing.

With that in mind, the good folks at ESPN puts Atlanta at No. 27 in this week’s power rankings.

Vince Carter, 42, will play in his 1,500th career game on Tuesday at Miami in his 22nd season. Only four players in NBA history have appeared in 1,500 games, including Robert Parish (1,611), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (1,560), Dirk Nowitzki (1,522) and John Stockton (1,504). With 59 regular-season games left, Carter could easily move up to third on the list but be just shy of Abdul-Jabbar in his final NBA season.

John Schuhmann of NBA.com moves Atlanta up to No. 26 and also makes mention of Carter’s upcoming milestone.

Vince Carter will play in his 1,500th career game in Miami on Tuesday, and he’s still gettin’ it done on occasion. Carter had a season-high 17 points, highlighted by a move that faked P.J. Washington out of his shoes, in the Hawks’ win in Charlotte on Sunday. With Trae Young averaging 31.0 points on an effective field goal percentage of 60%, the Hawks have scored more than 116 points per 100 possessions as they’ve won two out of three (for the first time since they started the season 2-0) in the wake of their 10-game losing streak. Young hasn’t been getting all the way to the basket as much as he did last season, but his floater game has been sharp; He leads the league with 66 non-restricted-area buckets in the paint, and is 56% on those shots is the best mark among 58 players who have attempted at least 50 of them.

Colin Ward-Henninger of CBS Sports moves the Hawks to No. 24 overall this week:

The Hawks got back the taste of winning for the first time in a long time by beating the Warriors and Hornets this week. Neither is exactly the ‘86 Celtics, but Atlanta sorely needed to get back in the win column after a 10-game losing streak. Kevin Huerter is getting healthy, which will greatly help the offense.

Cam Reddish managed to get Michael Shapiro’s attention in the latest ranking by Sports Illustrated and he puts the Hawks at No. 27.

Cam Reddish turned in his best performance as a pro on Dec. 4 with a 25-point effort against the Nets. Atlanta has fallen well short of expectations in 2019-20, and the playoffs appear out of reach, even in the East. The development of Reddish and De’Andre Hunter alongside Trae Young is now the Hawks’ primary motive in 2019-20.

Tommy Beer of Rotoworld (via Yahoo) puts the Hawks at No. 27 this week.

After losing ten straight, the Hawks have bounced back a bit, winning two of their last three. The one consistent has been Trae Young posting monster numbers. Over his last eight games, TY is averaging 34.4 points, 8.1 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 4.5 treys while shooting 50.8% from the floor, 44.4% from 3-point range and 93.2% from the free-throw line.

Finally, Mark Schanowski of NBC Sports Chicago finishes things up with putting Atlanta at No. 26 while trying to find the good in this team.

Trae Young continues to do his thing, but he isn’t getting much help. Former Bull Jabari Parker is enjoying a rebirth of sorts in the Deep South, averaging 16 points a game on nearly 50% shooting from the field. Plus, Cam Reddish had his best game as a pro last week, scoring 25 points in a loss to Brooklyn.

Well, that does it for this week’s ranking roundup. Overall, the Hawks still seem to be in the bottom five of the league, but they have managed to move up in the rankings slightly as they seem to get healthier.

As always, be sure to leave your thoughts below.
