Premium Member mrhonline Posted October 12, 2020 Premium Member Report Share Posted October 12, 2020 Unless Collins is willing to take a less than (his) max deal or the Hawks really wanna give him 5 years, I don't think we should expect an extension. Just my 2 cents... There is zero rush on this. Waiting it out allows us to make best use of our cap space because his cap hold will be less than whatever new contract he signs. I don't expect it to happen but would absolutely require a deal that TS believes he would have to exceed next offseason to make the case for it. Given JC's extended suspension, that isn't out of the possibility as a full season of what he did last year would have him in line for a bigger deal than his disrupted season should. Unless that circumstance arises, just wait and negotiate next year with the option to simply match competing offers. Even if TS is willing to max him (and I don't think anyone here thinks that should be the first option), he should still wait to get the max cap space.

I am in no way advocating to just give him a max deal. I'm just looking at reality. Someone is going to give him a max or near max deal. $15 million a year is just not going to happen barring major injury or major public relations episode. Someone will....that's the price.

Someone will....that's the price. Absent something significant changes in the meantime, I'm totally on board with matching just about any offer he gets next summer. That is my expectation for what will happen if Collins and TS don't mutually agree on a number. I'd rather overpay than let him go for nothing. Similar to how NO will react to Ingram's RFA status this offseason, imo. Whatever his abstract value is, he is too good for them to let go. This isn't a Bazemore situation where you should just waive goodbye if he gets that big offer because JC & Trae are a great combo and should be part of our core as our young wings come online. I know Supes views JC as being in the Bazemore bucket (not that he views them as equivalent but that both of them are guys you let walk if they get overpriced offers). I view JC in a "must keep" bucket. How TS views him will matter the most. Just my $.02.

I understand but the Hawks are gonna have to overpay to get a star or make a trade. So the question is are we on the right path? I think that remains to be seen. Popular Post NBASupes
Update: Indy/Minny It seems like a major breakdown has happened with Indy/Minny due to the inclusion of T.J. Warren. Seems like they do not want to move him if they move Turner and it doesn't seem up for discussion. This one hurt Minny because the LaMelo Ball trade up market is now nil for the value Minny sees as proper value and it seems like they will be stuck at #1. He said, watch for them to look at Deni, Obi, Anthony, LaMelo, Oyneka, and Tyrese. Indy/GS If Ball falls to GS. This is where Indy/GS could do a blockbuster deal. He was told the talks are around The Iguodala TPE in particular using Warren/Goga in it. Also, T.J. McConnell was mentioned. The centerpiece is GS choice of Sabonis or Turner. This will include BOTH 2020 #2 overall and MIN 2021 1st as well. Seems high on both ends and it is because Wiggins is considered a negative asset and Indy's willingness to add an asset like MIN 2021 1st is noticeable as well. This would be a massive blockbuster but this would build up Golden State's bench to extreme levels. He mentioned this deal is only available if Ball is available at #2. I asked if MIN takes him, could we see a deal with Ball still going to Indy and he said it doesn't seem like so. Indy feels the value they are willing to offer is more than enough. Basically, if MIN drafts Ball, he will play with MIN or be traded elsewhere but not to Indy considering the current options. Indy/Oladipo - MIL/LA teams/DAL/Brooklyn and Atlanta The Oladipo trade is down for five teams but realistically, four teams. Those teams are the Bucks who want an extension which won't happen so they are out, LAL, LAC, Dallas, and Brooklyn. I was told that the deal is mainly around lower end role players and mid 1sts. LAL is the only team willing to offer higher end rotational guys Green/Kuzma but this isn't the peak of their trade value right now as we just saw and a late 1st. We was told all four teams are confident they will land Oladipo. He thinks LA will get him but it's not a no brainer like it seemed. Seems like Atlanta isn't as hot on Green as they thought but Atlanta and Indy have engaged in trade talks again. For which players, I do not know. It could as small as T.J. McConnell or big as Brogdon. LAL is prioritizing KCP, Dwight, Rondo, Avery Bradley, and Morris for resigning. They are targeting Josh Jackson and a couple of other minor signings. They would like to land a starting level big for the MLE. Likely DEN' Plumlee or T. Thompson. I was told that DEN Grant is a target but he's unlikely to leave DEN who's their top priority signing. No news on MIA yet. 2

He's still owed $65 million over three years and if he plays offense and defense like he did his final season in Milwaukee, he'd be worth it.
