Official Game Thread: heat at Hawks

I hope somebody pointed out Trae's crucial *defensive* play (I only saw a couple, lol, but I'll take it!) in the closing seconds. When Bam was getting ready to gather for the all-too-predictable game-tying putback off Jimmy's missed jumper, and Trae got a paw in there and swiped the rebound clean away, where I think Huerter recovered it. Trae stripped Adebayo like a guy who knew he was once robbed of that Skills Challenge trophy. Then, the competency with which the whole team played keep-away until they could redirect the pass to Trae for the game-sealing free throws.

On that note: all. the made. free. throws. 18 straight by Trae, 4 misses for the whole team out of 35 attempts? Who are you people, and what have you done with my dear old Hawks? Somebody deserves a trophy in the shape of a gray mule when they hit freebies like that. Literally met Miami shot for shot.

I'll give you the Pippen como, but you gotta admit I told y'all a year ago about Cam's defense.  I saw that at duke.

No doubt. I think I even said something along the lines of..dang I didn’t even know he D’d up that well. Good call indeed. Man, I honestly thought we were getting a taller Ray Allen/ better shooting Tmac but this kid likes the other end a ton. 
 

2 things I always wanted as a Hawks fan and never did until now.

1. A legit top 5 point guard (Trae right now...closest before prolly Mookie)

2. A dominant wing defender (Cam soon) We has guys like Thabo and DMC on our squads in recent years that D up but the last one we actually groomed was prolly plastic man.

Trae finally hit 50 (thanks, Bam) and I'm more excited about what Cam and Hunter did. Huerter had some great moments as well. I would have maybe cried a little if we got swept by Miami. Especially after giving the last one away.

Did anyone else notice how most of the heat including Butler darted for the locker room?... Only player to stay and shake hands and congratulate the Hawks was Bam. Class act. Jimmy Bumler could learn a thing or two from him.

Guess they took the loss pretty hard especially after having a five point lead so late. Giving up 50 to any player has to be hard on those egos.

I did point it out.  And those are the types of plays that I was referring to in the other thread about how Trae can impact defense, even if he's getting cooked by his man.  Trae also drew a charge and got a weak side block in that 2nd half.  It's those types of plays that can prove his defensive worth.

The next level for them, is for all 3 of these guys to put up these kinds of numbers at the same time, more often.

As great as last night's win was, the elephant in the room is that Trae, once again, had to have a MONSTER GAME, in order for the Hawks to pull out a victory.  I pointed this out before the All-Star break, when people on here were talking about Trae's "empty stats" and playing "hero ball".  We needed every bit of that 50 point performance from him.

The Hawks are 9 - 6 when Trae scores 38 points or more.   And they're 11 - 7 when Trae makes 5 or more threes.  

Trae's ability to make 3 pointers, specifically the deep ones, opens up the entire court for everyone else. It especially helps Reddish and Hunter, because it either gives them a ton of open looks on the perimeter, or it enables them to go one on one and try to take their man ( or a big ) off the dribble.

When teams start to trap Trae again, his teammates must be able to make them pay for doing it.  So far this season, Trae's "hero ball" has been necessary in order for the Hawks to win.

For those of you who didn't see the game:

 

Full game - This was setting up to be the Bam Adebayo game, because he was a flat out monster, until the travel that changed the trajectory of everything.  Trae's efforts, up to that point, looked to be all for nothing.  Once Trae and the Hawks got a lifeline, they fought to survive . . and they did . . with DEFENSE!

 

 

Trae shoots a much higher percentage on those logo shots, than he does from regular 3 point range, which is ridiculous.  I count 8 - 15 from Logo range this season.

 

 

If Cam starts to finish around the rim like this on a consistent basis, his game will go that next level fairly quickly.  Even if the 3 point shot comes and goes, you want him to be the slasher that can get easy points around the rim.

Wilt is all over the chart. Honestly I was having trouble exporting the data into one excel file to sort
