Guys, I don't think Dallas regrets trading for Luka.  Much harder to get a playoff series win out west.  I think both the Hawks and Mavs are ecstatic to draft a franchise cornerstone. 

The conversation just got a little more interesting that you can actually make a case for Trae Young > Luka.  If the playoff run continues, I think people would give it some thought.

It's not a debate that interests me quite frankly. Id rather focus on our team.

Dallas went all in to win early and are paying the price right now

The full court press caught the Hawks off guard.  They will be better prepared for it.  However, check out the below if they decide to trap Trae.

I have said since his rookie year that Trae has been a win without including Cam. If the media cared to look at Trae without the prejudgment of "bust" they would have seen it.

I've always made the argument that some of the stats Luka generates (especially rebounds) are empty stats that don't impact the outcome of the game.

For example, how many of the rebounds Luka gets would have normally been grabbed by a big man on his own team but Luka grabbed the rebound because he wasn't out where he should have been at 3/4 court to initiate transition or guard in the event of an offensive rebound kick out. Or in the case of Trae's assists, he truly is creating for his teammates where in a large number of Luka's assists, he just giving the ball up when his iso attempt fails. I've watched quite a few of Luka's games where he gets an assist when in reality someone on his team is actually just bailing him out. His main attribute being he is big and draws a crowd leaving someone open but its not the same as creating and its less reliable come playoff time.

I'm one of the bigger stat heads around but some stats can be empty. This isn't to take away from the player Luka is, but IMHO Trae's 35/10 can be way more impactful than a Luka 30/10/10.  I'll take Trae almost every time because what he does makes others better.

In this example, look at Capela. Capela is playing 2.7 less minutes per game for the Hawks than he was with Houston but is scoring 1.3 more points per game and getting .5 more rebounds. Trae is not only being impactful himself but helping Clint be impactful as well.

Now lets look at Porzingis. He is getting more rebounds as a Maverick than as a Knick but he's scoring 2.6 less points per game and getting 1.4 less blocks. He's coming into his prime and his numbers should be increasing, not decreasing. He's shooting 4% higher than 2 years ago but scoring 2.6 less points per game. Some of Luka's stats are coming at the expense of his teammates, even though you could argue that teammate is earning it more by doing better work on the glass and shooting a higher percentage.

I'll take Trae's team first basketball. Just my preference.

If he sees the double coming you’re already cooked, he just passes too well out of it.  He was beating sideline doubles as a rookie.  His mates do a great job of coming toward the ball too so he has more passing style options.

But the good news is Luka now gets a few extra weeks to get a head start on packing on his training camp weight.

Their roster is kinda meh. They thought they had a chance at Giannis, but obviously that didnt happen. Probably gonna lose THJR in free agency too. No shame to losing to the Clippers in 7.

When he's hitting threes, that's big for us. Teams are so worried about Trae and Bogi, they usually concede JC on the perimeter.

Trae has a few clear cut advantages over Luka as it stands today: FT shooting, conditioning, and pure passing no question.  Trae is also rapidly closing in on reaching his defensive potential, Luka don’t give a damn about making standout plays.

I feel Ray here. Trae got crapped on because the Hawks had a bad record his first two years. The reality was Trae was our #1 guy last year. Luka has never been carrying his team. The on/off splits have always revealed it. You can check:

While Trae has been a more efficient scorer and passer each year of his career, Luka has been amassing stats that are impressive, but not making his team better. Even in these playoffs, Trae has pulled down almost the same number of offensive boards as Luka. Trae was snubbed for ROY because he was a great player on one of the worst teams talent wise ever put on an NBA court. So I have no problem saying Trae is better than Luka this year since his team is advancing and Luka's is not. If Luka's not even top-3 on his own team in on/off splits, he shouldn't be held up as the greatest young player.

I never worry about Johnny Martin III. An elite screener and lob threat who shoots a career .418 from the corner three and who’s FT shooting has improved every year to .830 who’s a great teammate?  Sign me up.

I was going to go through the whole game and point out all the BS in a new thread...like Embiid dribbling out of bounds on an errant pass or the refusal to give us a challenge and allowing Philly to inbound.

 

But, I really just want an answer on this one...This.  This was just a "missed call"…? And it's right in front of the ref...
