Can he really guard AD or Randle or JC?

Have to say yeah to that. I believe he can guard practically anyone 6-1 to 6-11 better than the median defender can. It's only when you get at or above 7-0 and with that have a big chest like Embiid... or get at or below 6-0 and with that have exceptional quickness... that I think his defensive benefit evaporates.

Interesting how we pick and choose which athletes to condemn for "hate speech", while certain athletes are apparently exempt. Hmm, I wonder why.

Yeah, he would probably still be in the league if he said the "N" word and not have upset a bunch of Jewish people.

Simmons went to being slightly overrated to hugely underrated.  He is a very good player if placed in the correct role.

I mean isn't he just a very good player already?   The dude is supposedly an all star already making $30 million.  I'm just not seeing where he hasn't been in the correct role.   His defense is fantastic but that has a lot to do with his length and quickness being a problem for the smaller guys he's defending.   The idea that he's been grossly misused by 2 coaches for 4 years, 3 all star appearances and was the second best player on the #1 seed team is strange to me.

I never said grossly misused.  However, I believe he'd better in a Bam role, than main creator role.  That's just my unprofessional opinion.  I'm more referring to the value people are suggesting the Sixers get for him.  All the things you are saying supports my theory that the Sixers should get more than a Kevin Huerter type player and maybe a first round pick in return for him.

Being a White player around a bunch of Black players and probably hearing it a hundred it said a hundred times a day, I wouldn't be surprised if he did, but it would not be in a hateful context. The primary driver of language is actually your peer group. Cancel culture isn't really interested in nuance or context, they just want another scalp.

So you are making the assumption that all black people sit around and say that word all the time? That's really weird my guy.

And you yourself use that word in a contextual manner?  The context of that word is racist.

He was overrated into being an All-Star last year.  He was definitely not worthy of making the team over Trae last year.

Here are my big picture thoughts as of now:

  1. Simmons isn't a good comparison to Josh Smith.  His BBIQ is good; Josh's IQ issues were taking terrible shots and Simmons doesn't do that.
  2. Simmons absolutely got scared in the playoffs last year.  Not taking a single 4th quarter shot in 5 of the 7 games against us and shooting 33% from the line is all about how he was mentally taken out of the game.  Passing up the dunk was a single play but it was emblematic of a big problem for Philly in the series against us.
  3. Philly bent over backwards to try to make it work with Simmons.  They wanted him to play inside more because they thought the team would be more successful but let him be the primary ballhandler to suit his ego.  I think there was resentment against him by the end of the Atlanta series when he got scared because it meant that he both wasn't playing the role they would want him to play in a white room and he was undermining the team by being unwilling to shoot in the PG role.
  4. Doc let that frustration boil out in the press conference which is inexcusable for a coach.  Embiid showed some of it as well but that is not all that unusual or that big a deal, imo.
  5. Simmons made 3&4 much bigger deals by cutting off communications with the team over the summer and making it known he wanted out.  This magnified the story of his struggles about 100 fold.  Coaches and players sniping at eachother is nothing new and is usually good for about a single news cycle as long as everyone gets back on track.  When Simmons decided to draw a line in the sand and not talk to anyone, it made it the story of the summer and fall in the NBA.
  6. MacDaddy nailed it.  Simmons is a very good player.  Not a great one.  Definitely not a terrible one.  But he is not the easiest player to build around and he has shown a hugely toxic ego since the end of the season in taking his ball and going home.  It has to be cratering his trade value.  Someone is going to get a bargain but that team really shouldn't be the Hawks.

It's used very commonly in Black slang. Of course not all Black people use it. More common among Black youth and urban culture. And yes it does have racist origins, but context and intent matter for any word. Common use of the N word in rap music and social media is hardly a revelation.

So if you're on the Marta train surrounded around a bunch of black people, you'll rap that word?

My point is, you know damn well it's not okay to be using that word when you are white rather contextual or not.  I don't go around using other words used to degenerate people if that group of people uses it or not.  For example, a lot of white youth use the term that describes Ritz C.  However, I don't feel the need to say it any context outside of a snack.

I don't believe in denigrating people. I also don't believe when someone is caught using a slur while playing video games that a crime against humanity has been committed. What slang people use is mostly about peer groups, not their actual views. And yes context does matter. If context doesn't matter, than nothing matters. To be quite frank, I'm a post racialist. Race is just made up idea, the sooner we leave it in the past the better.

The problem with Ben Simmons is that his problems predate the Sixers.  I don’t know when this baptism happened and the narrative flipped but he’s had issues at every level.

From his national/familial/social/amateur/collegial/professional relations there’s a common thread yet he seems to always slip through that sliver of an out where the blame can be placed on them.

I agree his issues were always there.  I feel, once they decided to ignore them, they gotta own it.  Don't wait til now, when the issue becomes plain to everyone, act like "Whhaaaat, thats new information.  I. Am. Out. Raged." to make yourself seem innocent.

It'd be like the PeliCan'ts actin all brand new when Zion ends up on Bravo, or whatever network has the fat people show, gettin cut outta his own house and carried away on a forklift.

David Griffin all, "Whhaaaat, Zion has a weight problem?  Shame on him."  Nah, mfer, you knew he was chasin' them Krispi Kremes with m&m mcflurries for breakfast.  Shame on you too.

I don't think so. If they were going to sell low on him they would have done it already. Sixers are going to sit on this until a better player becomes available.

They have somehow managed to take back control of the situation. You don't want to show up, you don't get paid. You show up but don't want to engage, you will get fined.

They are going to keep pounding his pockets as long as he acts like this. And at the same time, they aren't going to trade him for anything other than another star player.

It's an ugly situation but the Sixers have stuck to their guns up to this point, and now they have leverage over him. No need for them to reverse course now. The right deal will open up even it takes all season. He's got 4 years on his deal, they have time to wait and collect his money in the meantime.

Yeah.. Originally I thought that.. but with the back and fourth between Simmons and the Sixers... nobody is going to offer much... PLUS.... They can't let 29 Million dollars just languish for years.  His contract is too long.

I wouldn't be surprised to see them take  Haliburton/Heild from Sactown.

I'm sure there are plenty of Great Gatsby-ian forums that would be more than happy to have this conversation with you.  The questions are misplaced here.
