Premium Member Popular Post JeffS17 Posted September 1, 2021 Premium Member Popular Post Report Share Posted September 1, 2021 Interesting!! I didn't see this coming at all, but now that it's happened it really does make a lot of sense and continues the theme of Schlenk putting together a roster that has no glaring weaknesses or dependencies. Capela is amazing insurance if OO doesn't pan out and the contract is a very nice trade piece if any good pieces go on the market. A lot of teams/GMs make moves that are predictable and make sense, some GMs make moves that are unpredictably bad, but Schlenk keeps doing things that feel somewhat unpredictable but in hindsight make a lot of sense. He's been slowly building a stronghold of a franchise, brick by brick. 6
Premium Member MarylandHawk Posted September 1, 2021 Premium Member Report Share Posted September 1, 2021 I am kinda shocked they did that. I think it is a good deal but Seems a bit unnecessary at this point. With OO17 being groomed and Cam and Dre’s extension next year somebody is going to be left hanging. Premium Member niremetal Posted September 1, 2021 Premium Member Report Share Posted September 1, 2021 (edited) Is this not a deal we could have done next summer? If not, I can understand this extension. But if we would have been in a position to negotiate this next summer, I'm not a fan of doing it now. Clint just led the league in rebounds and was our defensive anchor in a year where we made a shock run to the ECFs. I think his value is near its peak now; I doubt his price would go up much next summer, and it could very well go down. And locking him up now makes it tougher for us to move his contract off the books if he takes a step back at some point over the next two seasons, which will reduce our flexibility when Hunter and Cam are up for extension. So yeah...I love Clint, but I feel like I'm missing something here. Edited September 1, 2021 by niremetal

Capela has more value now that he has 4 more guaranteed years than 2. 1
bleachkit
This one is head scratcher for me. OO should be able to fill his shoes, and much cheaper. Now we have two more years of CC at 23 per, not exactly a discount. Count me as one that gives this a big thumbs down.
Moderators Popular Post lethalweapon3 Posted September 1, 2021 Moderators Popular Post Report Share Posted September 1, 2021 I remain grateful for the Hawks Front Office Black Box, wherein sensible roster news pops out of the oven all hot 'n fresh, when and only when it's ready. Having a sensible and lowkey sports media base helps, but there's rarely any half-baked "BREAKING: SOURCES TELL ME THIS MIGHT HAPPEN" Hawks news, from professional pot-stirrers, like we endure from some of the thirstier NBA markets out here. ~lw3

You can go over the cap for those guys. If this team keeps making deep playoff runs, the luxury tax won't hurt as much.

Maybe it's one of them....they still have to prove themselves worthy of early extensions.
Moderators macdaddy Posted September 1, 2021 Moderators Report Share Posted September 1, 2021 I"m really surprised too but i guess i'm used to previous Hawks regimes. If it makes him easier to deal that's a plus. Not that i want him dealt but i'm not sure i can think of many close to 30 year old bigs who aren't stretch bigs making 20+ million. Just checked and outside of Gobert the next closest is Adams at $17m and a sharp drop off from there. But i like CC. I hope it works out.

Cap could have got more years and more money on the open market. Guess he loves playing with Trae that much. Once again there is only room for one 'Cap' and its not Clint. This deal combined with the deal for JC tells me that TS thinks that there will be pretty massive inflation so that this deal is not actually an increase at all in terms of the % of cap space it will occupy. That and the fact that Ressler is putting his money down on this team and TS is going to continue to value depth and versatility (i.e., the combo of Cap and OO looks very different than just one or the other as far as how it can match up). Hopefully Capela will make @Gray Mule happy and earn that incentive on his ft%.
