Atlanta Hawks fans (yes, they do exist) are still waiting for Marvin Williams to have his breakout season. It seems every offseason they’ve heard of the 6-9 forward tearing it up in the summer leagues, but when the games start to count, he hasn’t had the impact expected of a #2 overall draft pick. And it doesn’t help that Marvin was the man infamously picked ahead of Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Ray Felton when the Hawks needed a point guard. This past season, his second in the League, the North Carolina product went for 13.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game, besting both of his rookie-year averages. Heading into Year 3, he’s part of a developing Hawks nucleus — along with Joe Johnson, Josh Smith, Acie Law IV, Al Horford and Josh Childress — looked upon to bring the team out of the cellar. We got up with Marvin at the RBK Family Reunion a couple weeks ago before Hawks camp opened…

    1. In the off season I am in school. Right now I’m taking general courses but I think I am going to major in African American History.

    2. I play a lot of video games. I just played the Madden 08 for the first time today. In college football my cousin keeps beating me, so I have to sharpen up a bit.

    3. I’m a big football fan; it’s my favorite sport other than basketball. I root for my hometown Seahawks. I’m very close to the Burleson family — Nate plays for the Seahawks and I played AAU with Lyndale Burleson (Nevada).

    4. No question that right now Kanye has the hottest album out. I have been listening to it so much that I am starting to get tired of it (laughs). He’s my favorite rapper; I don’t listen to anything really but him right now. If I do listen to something else it would be The Game or Lil’ Wayne.

    5. I really don’t spend money like that. My last big purchase was a Chevy for my grandmother. I’m not that into cars; I drive a Denali. My favorite car is the ‘64 Impala. I have to get my hands on one of those.

    6. I have a few new tattoos. I have a new one on my arm that says “GBMS” which stands for “God Bless My Success.” I also have one dedicated to my grandmother.

    7. We have a lot of good ballers in Seattle. Nate (Robinson), Jamal (Crawford), Brandon Roy, Micah Downs … It’s tough to say how we’d stack up against other cities. NY and L.A. would be tough because they’re so big. We’re trying to make a name for ourselves. I mean, Brandon Roy got Rookie of the Year.

    8. I am super excited about the upcoming season. We got two really good young guys. It’s crazy I’m calling a guy young, but we have a really good duo coming in.

    9. The Eastern Conference has gotten better. Every night you have to go out and compete. Everyone knows about Boston, but look at Orlando. They have Rashard Lewis, and Charlotte got J-Rich.

    10. Man, the other day I was actually talking about this with Jackie Manuel; I think this year’s UNC team can win the national championship, but they would have NO chance against our national championship team. No question. A few of us were down there and we ran a little bit against them.

Ever since NBA 2K8 landed in the office the other day, we’ve been putting in work. One thing we found out is the Hawks are actually kinda good on the game. (Josh Smith owns the best dunk in the office so far, a baseline reverse on the Sonics that was contest-worthy.) Christian got up with one of ATL’s youngsters a couple weeks ago, getting 10 things straight from Marvin Williams

You have a ref who is betting on games that he has the means to determine the outcome of.

    a) indeed like said before he gave information on what crew were officiating what match. The league keeps this a secret until before tipoff as referees have certain tendencies that influences the likely outcome of the game (not who wins but the final score)

    b) after a lot of number crunching, Donaghy is suspected of making sure the games had a final score over the expected Vegas betting, not who wins. So calling more fouls and technicals then necessary to drive up the score, not betting on a team to win.

So long as Yi sits out and does not have a professional contract with any other team, the Bucks will lose his rights next year.

I do know most of the CBA though, strange rule, more exact

    Quote:

    42. What if the team and player can't agree to a contract? What options does the player have? How long does the team keep his draft rights?

The player's options are limited. What happens depends on a number of factors:

    * If the player is already under contract to, or signs a contract with a non-NBA team, the team retains the player's draft rights for one year after the player's obligation to the non-NBA team ends. Essentially, the clock stops as long as the player plays pro ball outside the NBA. Players are not included in the team's team salary while the player is under contract with a non-NBA team.

    * If the player was still eligible to play in college before he was drafted, the team retains the player's draft rights until the draft the player would have entered had he not left college early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2005, they retain his draft rights until the date of the 2007 draft. Note that the current NCAA rules state that players lose their NCAA eligibility if they are drafted, so the player could not return or go on to play college ball.

    * For all other players, the team retains the player's draft rights until the date of the next draft.

In any of the above cases, if the team does not sign the player in the allotted time, the player can enter the next draft. If the team that selects the player in the next draft doesn't sign him either, he becomes a rookie free agent.

When a team signs a first round draft pick in a year other than the year in which he was drafted, the player is signed using the salary scale for the year in which he is signed, not the year in which he was drafted. An exception to this is for players drafted prior to 2005, under the previous CBA. These players may be signed according to the rules for scale contracts set forth in the previous CBA, including three guaranteed years plus one option year, at the scale salary for the year in which the player was drafted.

One poster said something about Yi going back to China and playing next season as an amateur, i.e., not under a pro contract. This scenario potentially could cause Milwaukee to loose Yi's draft rights. I wonder if Harris took this into consideration.

This is BS by the way, as long as you offer him the contract option each year you'll retain his rights.

  5. furthermore, why did Seattle take Green?

They traded their allstar sg to grab another sf (Green), while they drafted KD (sf), have Rashard Lewis(sf) to resign and got another sf in the trade (Wally).

Not saying it's bad but if no other moves are coming, this isn't worthy of an A if you ask me.

Just curious but why in the WORLD would Phoenix even consider trading Amare? I just don't understand that at all just to get KG in return. Amare is like 24yrs old and KG is pushing 32yrs old. They both put up incredible numbers. Does Amare want out or something?

    a) Amare had microfracture surgery on his knee, twice if I recall correctly. Eventhough this surgery did work for him (in contrast to Allan Houston and Chris Webber, never the same afterwards) it's likely the knee will become a problem again.

    b) He's got some chemistry issues with Marion, Nash and perhaps even his whole team. Call it a superego.

    c) His moms is nuts and up in everybody's business, no kidding.

    d) Small market team with luxury tax issues

that said, Mari is so damn good they are trying their best to trade Marion instead

    _

What are the rumors involving Andre Miller anyway? If it involves the 11th+players I'm all for it.

Amare was first team all NBA last year. He's 24 years old. If you have a chance to acquire someone like that, you do it...I don't care how psycho the mom is.

Hey I know and agree, the question was why he was available in the first place. Mari is an astonishing freak of nature, in a good way.
