  1. This guy is such an idiot.

    Atlanta Hawks

    Round 1: None

    Round 2: None

Analysis: Atlanta sent this pick to the Phoenix Suns in 2005 as part of the Joe Johnson deal. Considering how well Johnson has played and the long three-year gap between the trade and this pick, we can't be too hard on the Hawks.

The Suns took Robin Lopez with the pick. New Hawks GM Rick Sund isn't going to lose any sleep over missing out on him.

The Hawks chose a veteran executive in Rick Sund to replace Billy Knight as GM, but only after Chris Grant, a former Hawks employee and now Danny Ferry's No. 2 man in Cleveland, turned down the job. Grant has never run a team, while Sund, who was on Donnie Walsh's short list of potential Knick GMs, has called the shots in Dallas, Detroit and Seattle during a 30-year front-office career. With Mike Woodson's contract up, Sund figures to make a run at former Timberwolves head coach Dwane Casey, whom he had in Seattle as an assistant coach. Casey has a place waiting for him in Dallas on Rick Carlisle's new staff if he doesn't get a head coaching gig.

  3. Hawks' Williams unsure of Game 7 status against Celtics

    Associated Press

ATLANTA -- Hawks forward Marvin Williams isn't sure he'll be able to play Sunday in Game 7 of Atlanta's first-round playoff series against the Boston Celtics after spraining his left knee.

Williams, who was hurt in the fourth quarter of a win Friday night, took part in a walkthrough at Philips Arena on Saturday before the team departed for Boston. But his knee was iced and heavily taped, and he didn't even attempt to bend it during the light, 30-minute workout.

"It's pretty sore right now," said Williams, who led the Hawks with 18 points in Game 6. "As of right now, the trainers list me as doubtful. I'll do the best I can to get as much treatment as I can and see if I can play tomorrow."

Coach Mike Woodson remains hopeful that Williams will be on the court. Besides his offensive contributions, he's a key part of the Hawks' defensive package, usually assigned to Boston star Paul Pierce.

"My gut says Marvin is going to play," Woodson said. "This is Game 7. He's put all his hard work from this summer into the regular season, and now he's got Game 7 with the best team in the league."

Williams was hurt with just under 9 minutes left in Friday's game when he bumped into Pierce as the Celtics' forward was driving toward the hoop. Pierce stumbled into Williams knee, which twisted awkwardly, and the Atlanta player immediately headed to the bench.

"It did not feel very good at all," Williams said.

The Hawks initially said he would not be able to return, but he re-entered to play defense with 20 seconds left and the Hawks clinging to a 100-98 lead.

"It could have been our last game," he said. "I definitely wanted to be there for my team. At the end of the game, they put me in there for some defense and I was able to help us get a stop."

Pierce also was hurt in the collision.

Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Pierce skipped Saturday's walkthrough because of a bruised right hip.

"Not because he couldn't, but because there was no point in him being out there if he's hurt," Rivers said.

Pierce was not available for comment after Friday's game or at Saturday's practice.

Williams, the No. 2 overall pick out of North Carolina in 2005, averaged a career-best 14.8 points a game this season. In the playoffs, he's fourth on the team with a 12.2 average, but he came up with a big effort in Game 6 of a series that has lasted much longer than expected.

Williams hit 6 of 9 shots from the field, made all six of his free throws and helped hold Pierce to only six points after the first quarter.

"I'm sure I'll give it a try in warmups," Williams said. "I definitely don't want to put myself at any greater risk of injury. I'll try to play it safe, but at the same time I want to be there for my teammates."

I love Marvin. I pull for him all the time. I wanted him more than anyone else in the 2005 draft. But quotes like this make me want to put him through "toughness" boot camp.

Have you ever heard Jordan, Ewing, Hakeem, Magic, Bird or any champion ever talk like that? C'mon Marvin...

  5. I saw that. For all the idiots who said making the playoffs meant nothing this year - that we'd just be Boston's first round sweep - this is just one of the reasons why it was invaluable.

We sold $100,000 worth of season tickets afer game 4. Next year, the house will be rocking. You think all those free agent's who've shunned ATL over the years, not for the city or the lifestyle but for the franchise, wish they hadn't. ATL will now be a free agent destination...

  6. from ajc.com.....

Posey's three-pointer drew Boston within 100-98 with 48 seconds left.

With 12 seconds left, Ray Allen put up — and missed — a quick three-pointer when Boston trailed 100-98. Johnson rebounded and was fouled, making two free throws for a 102-98 lead with 10.6 to go.

"Ray Allen is probably the best shooter in the NBA. But we didn't need the three, and that's what we said coming out of the timeout," Rivers said. "The call was for Ray to come off the pick, no shot, dump it down to Kevin. He was open; the problem was he was one for eight from the three-line."

Garnett scored off an inbounds pass with 8.7 seconds left, but Mike Bibby made a free throw with 7.4 seconds left, and the game ended with Boston's Rajon Rondo missing a three-pointer as time expired. The play was supposed to go to Allen or Posey for a three.

That was a huge mistake - a tie game could have easily resulted in a Hawks self-destruction on OT. there's a reason these guys (the big three) haven't had the success that was expected of them (individually)...

Stunned is definitely the word. For me, at least. I never saw 2 unless it was 3-1 and they got lazy or something. Anything can happen in a game 7. I'm proud of the guys for doing this.

I thought the hawks might be able to get it done at home once or twice. This team is soooo much better at home. Now, they've got to get better on the road...

  8. I agree. Can't let up now. Just getting there isn't enough. The Hawks have got to believe they can do it - and then must get it done. They have accomplished a lot but this must be overlooked. The prize is just too great...

Mann if nothing else, we have totally lifted ourself into solid and irrefutable respectability in this league with these wins. Nobody is looking at the Hawks now and making jokes.

Stated perfectly. This is why I wanted the Celtics in the first round. The world is our stage and we are making people recognize that most of the crap published about us is unwarranted...

  10. if marvin could ever get more aggressive, he could be an awesome complement to JJ, Smith and Horford by hitting open J's and driving and finishing. just needs to work on that last part and gain some aggression to take that next step...

i think it's fitting he finished as the team's high scorer

  11. Marvin may not have had his career high tonight, but he certainly played his best game in the Hawks most important game of his career. He was active and aggressive. I was so worried he had torn an ACL the way he fell. I hope he can build off this game the rest of this season and next...
