Truth be told, Atlanta missed out on a golden opportunity to be considered titletown. Think about what our teams went through from '95-'00. The Braves had clinched a title and was up 2-0 on the Yankees in '96. Our Falcons went to the Super Bowl in '98. We should have had two more titles AT LEAST if Wohlers didn't hang that slider and Eugene hadn't got caught smh.
Here's another thing: the Yankees always made it known they would only hang championship banners instead of division titles. Management was always afraid to make changes because of Bobby's regular season success. It's akin to GA fans who didn't want to see Coach Richt fired because of what happened at TN. Both UGA and Falcon fans kept saying, "we were one play away from the BCS/Super Bowl" after 2012. We're taught to accept being mediocre instead of demanding championships.
The point is, we will never make the bold moves necessary. The last franchise to actually do something bold was the Julio trade. Unfortunately, people still complain about that trade.

I shed a tear... EVERYTHING you said was spot on!!!
A HUGE part of all this is " The filter" . Every team in Atlanta has a filter. If a free agent, heck, if a current player isnt clean shaven, with zero personality, they either will not get offered a free agent contract or they will get ran out of town. Lets start with the Braves as you pointed out. Think back. DURING the Pirates second playoff series against the Braves, Barry Bonds let it be KNOWN in the media and to the Braves that he wanted to become a Brave at the end of the playoffs. He was a free agent. The Braves claimed they had no money and actually interviewed Sid Bream about Bonds as a team mate.
EXCUSES!! The Braves found money for Greg Maddox. They couldve had BOTH Maddox and Bonds because this was back with Ted Turner was spending BIG TIME. The Braves didnt want Bonds personality on that team. They already was trying to run Deion Sanders out of Atlanta and didnt wanna add Bonds to that mix. The Braves couldnt had the best ALLTIME team in baseball history. The outfield wouldve been Bonds, Gant and Otis Nixon. Sid Bream wouldve got demoted to the bench and David Justice wouldve been on first base. Terry Pendleton at 3rd base. Belliard short stop, Lemke second base and Berryhill, Olsen etc. at catcher. They wouldve had the best offense EVER. Deion and Bream coming off the bench. THERE WENT THE MULTIPLE WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONSHIPS right there when the Braves decided they didnt need Bonds. Think about this lineup. Who you gonna walk in the middle of that lineup?
c otis nixon
2b marke lemke
3b terry pendleton
rf barry bonds
1b david justice
lf ron gant
c olsen/berryhill
ss belliard
That was too much for Atlanta. Also, as you pointed out, Cox got a pass the whole time he was the manager. Dude wasnt a strategy manager. He was a players manager.
The Falcons. Think back. They couldnt sell out the Georgia Dome for years after Deion Sanders was run out of town. You couldnt even watch a local Falcon game because they was always blacked out. The Smiths had a problem. They wanted to unload the Falcons, but the team was unattractive. NO SUPERSTARS, no value. The Falcons went behind the scenes and instructed Reeves to draft Michael Vick. INSTANT box office, instant team value increase and Arthur Blank jumped on the party. There was and still is a lot of gloating by some fans that Vick isnt a Falcon anymore. Remember Peerless Price? He got treated so bad by the local media that he said the infamous " i hate yall" at Flowery Branch to the media.
Free agents see this crap in Atlanta. Transient fans see this crap and want NO PART of it. They see that the teams from their home markets dont give a crap about a filter and try and get the best player available. Meanwhile, you got folks in Atlanta that continue to make excuses for why the franchises suck. They bring up cap space, " its a process" , any excuse for this crap. The Falcons and Hawks been in " a process" for over 50 years. I said earlier in thread that im tired of my folks laughing at me for being a Hawks fan. They are all Celtic fans and i made a promise. Let the Hawks mess up this off season with the draft and free agency and im bouncing on them. Ill cheer for them and hope them well, but ill have TWO teams to root for. Boston aint afraid to win.
Believe it out not, the Braves and Pirates HAD agreed to a trade for Barry Bonds. Both sides were getting ready to make the trade official until Jim Leyland found out about the trade and pitched a fit to the GM.

Where is our 30 for 30 special.
I can't wait to see the part about Babcock making the guarantee... and the Falcons getting the breaks beat off of them in the superbowl.I can't wait to see the Eugene Robinson suspended for a $40 blow Job on the night before the superbowl. Mr. Bart Starr himself.
I can't wait to see the day we traded Dominique to Los Angeles and Danny Manning taking his talents to Phoenix.
The Sell of the Flames.
Yep... ESPN, bring on the cameras... so that maybe the League will feel sorry for us and let some calls go our way!
It'll never happen. They've always hated our guts for years, and we're a proverbial joke no matter if it's the Hawks, Falcons or Braves. They didn't start the Cleveland tel-a-thon until around Game 6.

According to Mike Conti, Teague and co. were expecting Boston to foul since they had one to give. When it became clear they weren't going to foul, it was far too late for anything to develop. If that's true, Coach Bud should have called to and come up with an actual play. I still can't fathom holding on to the ball for 15 seconds.

Between the Braves/Red Sox and Hawks/Celtics, we will play Boston six times over the next four days. The Bravevs suck and have lost their last five games, and the Hawks just lost two straight to the Celtics. I would be done with both teams if we go 0-for-Boston this week.

With Toronto's loss, we are now 10 games up on Chicago who jumped Toronto for 2nd in the East. Toronto has now lost 5 in a row though Washington did win.
Here's something funny that happened at MSG earlier tonight.

Heard on the radio last night that the Cavs would have to go 22-1 just to catch us if we go .500.
We should clinch a playoff berth by Wednesday (magic number down to 4). Our magic number to clinch the Southeast is like 10, and the magic number to clinch the #1 seed in the East is 15.
Washington is in a free fall, and Toronto has lost 4 in a row since beating us. They're only a half game up on Chicago for the #2 seed, and Cleveland is a full game behind Toronto.

Thunder bench only scored 22 combined points while our bench scored a combined 32 points. Outside of Durant, Westbrook, and Ibaka, the next leading scorer was Adams with 9 points. That's why I was amused by the critics saying we need a superstar. We saw how OKC were becoming unglued in the second half once their shots stopped falling. I mean, their bench gave them little support to where Durant, Westbrook and Ibaka played over 35 minutes apiece. In the meantime, not a single Hawks player played more than 33 minutes. Our leading scorer had 13 off the bench.
What I really enjoyed the most about this win was how we imposed our will from the 2nd quarter on. We were living in the paint all night long. They tried everything they could to stop Korver, and we still scored over 100 against them.

Indy is getting boatraced!
What a showing in an elimination game! Weak weak!
I'm really glad they got embarrassed today because all of their trash talking was pretty weak. Midway through the 3rd quarter, they only scored 40 something points while allowing 80 something. They played their entire season on the premise they would face Miami in 7, but it turns out, they got eliminated by Miami for the third straight year.
On the other hand, congrats to the Heat for reaching the Finals 4 years in a row. It would be nice for us to experience going to the Finals once in our lifetimes.

How many people from Atlanta do you know that pull for the Hawks?
I do!

They're also going to show the 1993 Eastern Conference game 3 between the Hawks and Bulls on NBATV at 4 p.m. today if anyone is interested.

If you really have to ask this, then you haven't paid attention to the attention whore the last few years.
Oh I know. It was a rhetorical question.

My only gripe is, if he intended on signing with Houston all this time, why did he feel the need to prolong the inevitable?

True, hope he picks tomorrow.
But what time tomorrow? Will it be 1 p.m. CT? EST? or PST? Or would it be in the evening? He should do it like signing day. Have five different hats sitting in front of him and spends the next 30 minutes staring at each one before finally picking.

Game 6's ending reminds me of a similar situation. Game 4 of the 2002 WCF when Horry got the perfect bounce to hit that game winning shot.

Congrats to the Heat. Their second best player (Wade) is considerably better than San An's second best in Parker. I'm a LeBron and Jesus fan to the death, so I ain't too hurt as a Spurs fan. They sagged off LeBron on the jumper, and he hit damn near every one. Great cap to a great NBA season. Let's Go Hawks.
At this point, Lebron has pretty much redeemed himself for "The Decision". And his stat-line for tonight was amazing: 37 pts, 12 rbs, 4 assts and only 2 tos. Looking at the box score is interesting. Wade scored 23, Battier scored 18, and Chalmers scored 14. The only other person who scored was Anderson. Bosh, Miller and Allen all had goose eggs.
-
Heat are 2-1 since their Big 3 came together. Already more successful than Boston's Big 3. Do you think they will make it to the Finals for a 4th time? Who would be their biggest challenger next year?
-
And so was Ginobili. He was either on the Heat's payroll, or he had compromising pictures of Pop. He always seemed to make ill-timed passes over the last two games. I really feel bad for Duncan. He had the game of his life on Tuesday, and it was all for nothing. Then tonight, he had a couple of chances at tying the game but failed. I have to say though, Leonard did everything he could to keep the Spurs close. I'm not mad the Heat won. We were treated to two classic games in Miami. Such a shame for Duncan though.

Mark it down: Miami wins by double digits and 'Bron gets his Finals MVP, so the media can continue to make comparisons to him and Jordan.
-
Miami has not lost two in a row in months. Miami simply cannot win if Lebron plays passively. He rarely drives to the basket anymore, and he has only gone to the foul line a handful of times. It's almost like watching Joe Johnson in a sense. Lebron will halfheartedly drive to the basket and either dish it to a shooter or back it out. Mike Miller did everything he could last night (5-5 for 15 points). Birdman has been ineffective; Wade's jumpshot is useless (did anyone see that horrendous travel where he tried to get Duncan to bite on his pumpfake?), Bosh has gone missing. So who else can they really count on? Up until the third quarter, Lebron didn't even break double digits in points.
Look at these +/- numbers: James -32, Bosh -21, Wade -29. Also Lebron took 21 shots whereas Wade and Bosh both combined to take 25 shots. Also, the entire team had 10 FTAs.
What San Antonio did last night was a clinic. They clogged the lane and forced Lebron to shoot. He had no confidence in his jumpshot. Even their fans got in on the act lol.

0-14 now. TNT flashed a stat earlier that was telling. Horford finished with 11 points, 5 rebs and a mind boggling -34 in 27 minutes. Only Avery Bradley was worse.
