  1. Amazingly, everyone on this team could potentially be an FA in 2010 besides Smoove.

I hope to God we can resign JJ for about 17-18 mill a year (how much do you guys think he asks for?).

Hopefully, we can get Horf for Smoove's price or less (10 million a year would be great).

    So we have:

    12 million -- Smoove

    17 million -- JJ

    11 million -- Horf

    =

    40 million

Can we nab a big-time FA that year? Will Sund go after one? Obviously, we have to fill out our team with decent talent--depth is the key.

Also, I think the sleeper team to watch out for in 2010 is the Lakers...Odom is off the books this year, I don't know if Gasol will be there by then, leaving the Lakers with a LOT of money to work with

I don't really think Horford will ask for 11 mil, a reasonable price for him would be 9 mil. Joe... I say between 16 and 17 mil. And don't forget a smaller Bibby salary ( If he gets re-signed ) and Claxton gone in 2010 will be an extra 11 mil or so...

  2. Look I hate to be negative but why are all Atlanta (not just Hawks) fans bandwagon?

The Hawks are a prime example. When the Hawks started 6-0 everybody on this message board was raving about the team. The only negative thing at the time was the fact that Woody was still coaching and Smith was down. Now I will let ya'll know I am not a Mike Woodson fan, but I am an Atlanta Hawk fan. So to say that a 9-6 record is not acceptable playing 11 games without their starting F Josh Smith is completely sane! C'mon. Look the Hawks are 5-6 since Smith has been out but we lost mainly because of his absence and coaching. Don't start blaming Horford for not being a post-presence because when Smith is playing Horford is a nice post-presence. And don't start blaming Flip because his shot is off. Flip has been bench player most of his career, and unfortunately he has not stepped up his game since J-Smoove went down but Flip has been a nice addition to this team. Look at the beginning of the season if you had told me that the Hawks would be 9-6 without Josh Smith I would have laughed in your face. What it comes down to is that the Hawks are virtually competing in every game, win or loose. The only blowout loss I recall this season was vs. the Cavs. We lost to Boston by a hair and a few other teams because of poor coaching. But when J-Smoove comes back I expect the Hawks and our 'bandwagon' fans to pick up the morale.

At least that doesn't apply to me. I became a hawks fan a little before their 13 win season.....

  3. 1) Bibby was on fire in the 3rd. So why does he not shoot until there's 2 minutes left in the game?

    2) Where the HELL was ZaZa? The guy could've finished with 35 rebounds. He was going for everything and was playing with great intensity.

    3) Can't he get more plays for JJ in the post against a far inferior player?

This loss frustrates the hell out of me. Toronto has Bosh, Calderon (who didn't even play well) and a bunch of trash 3 point shooters.

And on top of that, we didn't use any bench (you know what I mean), so all our big guns will have dead legs tomorrow for a scary road game against a team with a new coach and a bunch of athletes

Woody should just leave himself.... no one needs to explain this one!

  4. Negatives!

Mo Evans is not even an average defender!

Murray is back to his old self (he played well tonight though)

Zaza looks horrible again. Is he injured?

JJ's shot is off and he has been in a slump the last few games.

Woody is not drawing up any new plays, we desperately need an offensive minded assistant coach.

Acie looks like Acie from last year if not worst.

    Horford han't gotten any better.

    hotlanta1981

    Postives!

We are still winning! 9-5 is a record that nobody expected. I know hotlanta1981 expected us to be 14-0, but oh well.

We are winning on the road

Marvin has been clutch, he hit 4 big 3's so far this season. (@OkC,@ Bos, vs Was, vs Cha). He is shooting over 50% from long range.

Bibby has been shooting well and hitting big shots.

Solo has limited his fouls and actually is contributing this year.

Smoove is about to come back!

    How to get better?

No we shouldn't trade Bibby. In fact we should trade for Camby since he will come cheap. Clippers are already out of it and Camby would like to get traded before deadline. I think that Zaza and a 2nd round pick will do it. I would even give them a 1st rounder for Camby and a filler.

    discuss.........

I can't agree with the all your negatives.... I mean honestly some of those negatives are complete bull.

  5. Thats the number of Free throws we shot tonight.......unacceptable.That shows we are taking too many jumpers regardless of the refs.Granted,Toronto shot 10 FTs,but still. Also we had 15 turnovers

The team has fell in love with the 3 - pointer... they don't drive in the lane as much, but when Josh Smith returns the number of free throws WILL increase....

  6. Hello everyone, I would just like 2 say I am a huge Atlanta Hawks Fan. I have been one my entire life since I was introduced the sport of basketball. I enjoy reading all the posts some are intriguing, thought provoking, hillarious, and just downright full of hate. With all of that bein said I feel that although the hawks have slipped a little bit due to injuries, fatigue, playin time, etc we will be alright and ready 2 shock the world once more. Everybody keep your head up and dont 4get if u are a real hawks fan u are one through good and bad(there has been more bad than good the last decade trust me I know) Well anyway I maybe rambling but I just wanted to introduce myself and let everybody know I got the hawks back!!! Now go out there and please beat the Wizards 2 nite !!

Well... WELCOME! Enjoy the future conversations! :conversation:

  7. While it's hard to conceive of a player who doesn't have an expiring contract and hasn't played in nearly two years as a legit trading chip, I think it could happen.

Last season, because Craig missed the first 41 games of the season, the final 41 games were covered via insurance at 80%.

What I don't know is if Claxton's new injury, this time to his "hamstring," requires the Hawks to wait 41 games this season. I'm assuming worst-case scenario that they do.

It's likely that he won't have played at all this season by the time January 20th, game (#41 v. Chicago) comes and goes. So, once again his contract for the second half of the season would be insured at 80%.

If the Hawks look to trade Claxton in, say, February, they will already have paid at least $2.88M of Claxton's remaining $11M salary. For each game he misses beyond those 41 games, insurance will pay 80% of his salary. So, if he hasn't played by January 20th, he's not likely to play anymore the rest of the season.

Knowing that, I say "trade him."

    Why?

    Because of:

    1. What Blazers' GM Kevin Pritchard said about Raef LaFrentz, a player in a similar situation:

    Colombian

    2. Claxton's likely retirement at season's end. Assuming he doesn't play this year, he will not have played in three years. If he retires, the team holding his contract should receive, at the very least, 80% of his salary back for the 2nd half of the season.

    --- --- ---

    Looking at this financially:

1st half of 08-09 = $2.88M --> Will have already been paid by the Hawks

    2nd half of 08-09 = $2.88M --> Insurance pays 80%, leaving only $576K for team to pay

    1st half of 09-10 = $2.60M --> Worst-case scenario = $2.60M paid by team

    2nd half of 09-10 = $2.60M --> Insurance pays 80%, leaving only $520K for team to pay

So, worst-case scenario, a team trading for Claxton shouldn't have to pay him more than $3.7M for the remainder of his contract.

Keep in mind that Claxton's declining salary structure works even more in the Hawks' favor. If the AS can afford to do so, the Hawks could trade Claxton to a cash-strapped team in exchange for a player making around the same amount of money, and potentially save that team upwards of $5M.

You're not going to get anyone close to All-Star level for Claxton, but the potential is there to add a rotation player if the Hawks want. If you added someone like Randolph Morris into the trade, you might be able to get a decent big man in return.

    For example:

    Claxton/Morris/2nd -for- Darko Milicic

The Grizz would pay out ~$5M for the combined salaries of Claxton and Morris if the trade was made in February. Meanwhile, the Hawks would be paying Darko Milicic $11M during that same timespan. Since there's a VERY good chance that Darko will leave for Europe in 2010 anyway, the Grizzlies' getting a decent young big AND huge financial savings would be a nice return of investment IMHO.

The Milicic trade is just an example, but hopefully it convinces you that Claxton could in fact be a legit trading chip.

Getting rid of Speedy and adding Darko would be 2 steps forward for this team! Claxton leaving and Darko entering!

  8. :write a letter:

Schedule maker must have put in some deep thought into this schedule.

After tonight's game, we have 2 @ home.

After the second home game, we play the next night on the road,

the first of four straight away from Phillips Arena.

    FINALLY:

Then, fron the 12th of December thru the end of the month, we have

eight in a row @ home.

Knowing our record away from home before this season, this would have

seemed a good way to bury the Hawks before they became a serious threat

to upset the balance of things. But, these Hawks are playing '500 on the

road and winning @ home. Hopefully, that will continue.

    :conversation:

And with Josh Smith coming back... you bet this Hawks team will hold up!

  9. There's no excuse to be up 17 and then to win by 4 points against a group of selfish athletes who don't even have a real head coach.

What is the point of having Marvin in the final minutes? Don't you think Solomon, who had a double double and was contesting everything, would have been a better fit?

To all you people who whine about us whining about 3 point wins against trash NBA teams, I'm sorry if I'm not impressed that we can hardly beat an undermanned Milwaukee team, Charlotte, and now the Wizards.

The only good thing Woodson has been doing recently is playing Mo Evans, who is making a pitch for 6th man

This game shouldn't get Woody fired.... all the other games we lost should've got him fired!

  10. It DOES work both ways. Our opponent shot 24-31 from the free throw line.

That's 7 points they missed. They lost 102-98, by 5 points.

See, it pays to hit ALL your free throws!

Good win tonight, even if we did have to fight right down to the end to preserve

what had been an easy one until late and the Hawks had to withstand the final,

    furious run by our opponent.

That winning plaw between Marvin & Horford was so nice!!

Ugly. Pretty. Whatever. A win is a win and we'll take it and be proud that it

belongs to us, however it came about.

    GO HAWKS!!!

Man I have to tell you... I HATE MISSED FREE THROWS!!! You never know if your team will loose by 1 or 2 points and those 1 or 2 free throws you missed could've changed the whole game...

  11. Strange thing in the east, as we check the standings:

There are 15 teams in the east - 8 qualify for the playoffs.

EVERY one of the current top eight won their last game.

EVERY one of the other 7 eastern teams lost their last game.

    Odd, isn't it.

Some sports writers said, before the season, Hawks would do well to match last year's

win total of 37. 10 down and 27 to go!

Almost every team in the NBA has already had at least some of their players out with

injuries. Hawks have one, Speedy, who is apparently on permanent injury status.

We played a game or two where our entire front line starters were out with injuries.

Josh, Zaza and Horford all were out at the same time, I believe, in one game.

Hawks big men inside aren't great. We still have too many layup drills run on us.

Josh should help put a stop to that when he returns. However, Zaza recently pulled

down 17 rebounds and didn't even see the floor late in the game. Not bad when we

consider he's playing with one good arm and one sore arm. Then, since Josh is

missing to block shots, our wise Solomon had 4 blocks in the last game. Not bad for

a lad that was drafted late in the second round a while back.

With a few days off here, JJ may get his toe healed up. Zaza his sholder. We expect

to see Josh S. return real soon. (Just don't come back too soon and re-injure yourself)

Except for Speedy, Hawks just might be healthy for the next stretch of games. Four

of the next six are on the road, if you hadn't noticed.

    :lock:

If all this happens, we'll be back to our 6-0 Hawks team. It would all come together so nicely, but I don't think mentioning Speedy even matters.... spotting big foot being abducted by aliens while a ghost takes a picture is more likely than seeing Speedy play and make a difference....

Allen Iverson already has laced up his walking shoes once this season, getting dealt from Denver to Detroit. It can't possibly happen again before the league's Feb. 19 trading deadline, can it?

    1The Top 20 Expiring Contracts

    By Marc Stein

    ESPN.com

    (Archive)

A new month approaches with the over-under firmly set. Three more trades in December, anyone?

I suspect you won't complain if we do see three more deals between now and New Year's Day after such a lively November. I'm also guessing you could use a list of the 20 most lucrative last-year salaries in circulation, since the pursuit of players in the final year of their contracts has never been more aggressive, as teams all over the league seek salary-cap flexibility in advance of some tantalizing free-agent classes during the next two summers … or payroll relief in this brutal economy.

Says one Western Conference executive: "I honestly think it has more to do with the economy for some teams than the summer of 2010."

Either way, here we go with a detailed look at the 10 biggest expiring contracts and a quick run through the next 10, all after consulting with a few team officials for guidance:

    1. Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks)

    Expiring Salary: $21,372,000

Soon to be traded? HIGHLY UNLIKELY

All the regret the Mavericks are supposed to feel about parting with Devin Harris in February's megatrade for Kidd fails to account for a few key developments in Dallas. 1. Kidd's arrival, if nothing else, rejuvenated Dirk Nowitzki to the point that Nowitzki carried the Mavs into the playoffs late last season, which might have been the only way Dallas was going to get there. 2. Kidd is quietly playing quite well this season under Rick Carlisle, leading the Mavs to believe that one successful trade addition to fortify their woeful bench -- which they presently are pursuing hard by offering up Jerry Stackhouse's cap-friendly contract -- could keep their Nowitzki-Kidd-Josh Howard-Jason Terry core in the West elite. 3. Sources say Dallas has been rejecting all Kidd inquiries because it would prefer to (A) put off any drastic alterations until after giving this group an entire season with its new coach and (B) play out the season without taking back any salary that extends past the 2009-10 season and into the free-agent bonanza that will follow.

    2. Allen Iverson (Detroit Pistons)

    Expiring Salary: $20,840,625

Soon to be traded? HIGHLY UNLIKELY

The Answer, as you undoubtedly know, began the season with "HIGHLY LIKELY" next to his name and indeed was already traded once. He'd have to skip out on numerous practices for the Pistons to consider trading him, since their desire to have loads of salary-cap flexibility to replenish their aging team -- either in July or in the summer of 2010 -- outweighs any concerns about in-house tension Iverson might cause or fears that the Chauncey Billups-for-Iverson gamble is already backfiring. You also have to believe that Pistons president Joe Dumars, who began chasing Iverson when he moved into management at the turn of the century, wants to give his dice roll a full season to pan out.

    3. Stephon Marbury (New York Knicks)

    Expiring Salary: $20,840,625

Soon to be traded? HIGHLY UNLIKELY

Trading Marbury is more like impossible … as much because of New York's unwillingness as anything. It's almost inconceivable that the Knicks could concoct a trade for Marbury that wouldn't require them to take back an unpalatable contract or two, which could undo all the future promise created by their recent deals that shed the contracts of Jamal Crawford and Zach Randolph. Buying out Marbury or releasing him outright and paying his full salary always have been the only options here. (Malik Rose, by contrast, is No. 13 on this list and does still rank as a trade candidate, but only if the player coming back to the Knicks, as you probably could have guessed, has a contract that runs out after the 2009-10 season.)

    4. Shawn Marion (Miami Heat)

    Expiring Salary: $17,810,000

Soon to be traded? SOMEWHAT LIKELY

Marion's fate is one of the hardest for folks around the league to forecast. Some teams remain convinced Miami is determined to keep Marion on its books through the end of the season and then let him walk so the Heat can use the resulting salary-cap space to make a run at Utah's Carlos Boozer seven months from now. Others believe the Heat are willing to trade Marion between now and February if they can get back "star quality" or at least players they like whose contracts don't extend beyond 2009-10, when Dwyane Wade hits free agency. The strongest thing we can say is that Marion does have trade suitors (like Toronto) and is the most likely to be moved of the players in our top five. Which might or might not be saying much.

    5. Mike Bibby (Atlanta Hawks)

    Expiring Salary: $14,983,603

    Soon to be traded? UNLIKELY

Bibby is a good fit with the Hawks fiscally and on the floor, as an accomplished shooter who plays well off star guard Joe Johnson … without taxing Atlanta's well-documented financial restrictions. It remains to be seen whether the Hawks will defy the skeptics and try to re-sign Bibby at season's end, but things have gone so well since Bibby arrived -- with Atlanta halting its long playoff drought and taking Boston to seven games in the first round, then starting well this season in spite of multiple injuries -- that you'd expect them to knock back any trade interest. One scenario floated this week suggested that Portland is putting Bibby proposals together.

    6. Lamar Odom (Los Angeles Lakers)

    Expiring Salary: $14,148,596

    Soon to be traded? UNLIKELY

Odom repeatedly has insisted that, even in a contract year, he's OK with his new role as the Lakers' sixth man. If the Lakers are convinced of that, why would they dare mess with their chemistry by trading Odom during the season, especially given how well they've played in November? Even an Odom-for-Marion swap, which does make some sense for both teams, represents a risk for L.A. because Marion isn't big enough to stand in for Andrew Bynum should Bynum's injury issues return. So it's probably smarter for the Lakers to wait until the offseason and bank on the idea that they could convince Odom to participate in a sign-and-trade -- and thereby avoid losing him without compensation -- if the current harmony doesn't last.

    7. Rasheed Wallace (Detroit Pistons)

    Expiring Salary: $13,930,000

Soon to be traded? HIGHLY UNLIKELY

As with Iverson, Sheed offers a one-of-a-kind presence and skill set combined with a contract that folds perfectly into the Pistons' plans to enter the offseason with numerous options. It's a package way too valuable, in other words, to surrender between now and the deadline.

    8. Wally Szczerbiak (Cleveland Cavaliers)

    Expiring Salary: $13,275,000

    Soon to be traded? LIKELY

As expensive as it'll be for a tax-paying team with Cleveland's $91 million payroll to take on more long-term salary by parting with Szczerbiak, imagine how costly it could be to the value of owner Dan Gilbert's asset if the Cavs don't load up as much as they can between now and July 1, 2010. They already know LeBron James is going to consider all his options in free agency, and they know 10 (or more) teams are going to try to sign him away. The Cavs' best counter is getting as good as they possibly can before James hits the open market in an attempt to convince him that Cleveland is the place to stay. One plugged-in exec insists he can see the Cavs parting with Szczerbiak only in a deal for New Jersey's Vince Carter, but I'm (grudgingly) more inclined to agree with Bill Simmons' belief that the Cavs are after Michael Redd, Mike Miller and several other recognizable names.

    9. Raef LaFrentz (Portland Trail Blazers)

    Expiring Salary: $12,722,500

    Soon to be traded? UNLIKELY

If the Blazers could get an undeniable impact player or a top-notch veteran point guard who doesn't carry a long-term contract, such as Kidd or Bibby, I suspect they'd part with LaFrentz's last-year deal, which is largely covered by insurance payments. In the likely event that they can't? The Blazers have other pieces to keep offering in trades -- such as Sergio Rodriguez, Channing Frye and Ike Diogu, although teams prefer to ask for Travis Outlaw -- and good reason to hang onto LaFrentz and let him come off the payroll at season's end, with several talented kids on the roster soon to be looking for contract extensions.

    10. Andre Miller (Philadelphia 76ers)

    Expiring Salary: $10,333,334

    Soon to be traded? UNLIKELY

There will be no shortage of interest in Miller if the Sixers do decide to make him available. Most teams don't expect that to happen, given Philadelphia's playoff aspirations and the fact that Miller and high-profile newcomer Elton Brand already have some familiarity after playing together with the Clippers. But there is a sense that if the Sixers continue to disappoint/underachieve, Miller could end up on the market, since he's the most movable player Philly has and since the Sixers already are out of the 2010 free-agent frenzy.

The next 10 richest expiring contracts:

    11. Memphis' Antoine Walker ($9,052,460)1; 12. Indiana's Rasho Nesterovic ($8,400,000); 13. New York's Malik Rose ($7,647,500); 14. Houston's Ron Artest ($7,400,000); 15. Cleveland's Eric Snow ($7,312,500); 16. Chicago's Drew Gooden ($7,151,183); 17. Indiana's Marquis Daniels ($6,864,200) )2; 18. Oklahoma City's Chris Wilcox ($6,750,000); 19. Sacramento's Bobby Jackson ($6,487,888); 20. Chicago's Ben Gordon ($6,404,750) 3.

1 The final two years on Walker's contract, worth more than $20 million, are based on a team option and will be declined by the Grizzlies. Any team that trades for Walker also would be expected to decline the option, but cash-strapped Memphis is unlikely to move him unless it receives expiring contracts in return.

2 Daniels has one season left on his contract after this one, at $7.4 million, but it's also a team option. That essentially turns Daniels, like Walker, into a last-year player.

3 Because he is playing on a one-year qualifying offer and will have his full Larry Bird rights at the end of the contract, Gordon cannot be traded without his consent. And since granting that consent would cause Gordon to lose his Bird rights and enter free agency July 1 as a non-Bird free agent, don't expect him to give his permission if a trade offer Chicago would consider materializes.

I used to be pro-trade-Bibby, but now I could actually see him as a permanent PG for a couple of years... I mean honestly, of course he's not going to ask for 14 mil contract again in his career, so we can sign a good veteran PG for around 6 or 7 mil in Bibby.s

  13. First he has 17 rebounds the other night and doesn't play in the fourth qtr. Then tonight he recieves a DNP - Coaches Decision. Is he hurt? in the Doghouse? What happened? Any details or insight?

Yeah ever noticed that patch on his shoulder these past couple games? It's because he has a shoulder injury. He woke up one day and could barely move his arm, so he got the day off, but you can tell he's not the same still.

  14. Bibby is playing big time basketball and JJ has to love him taking the pressure off...

the question is should we negotiate a resign of Bibby (not an extension)...

    I say yes.

    Here's what I would offer...

    4 year 25 Million.

Starts at just a little over 5 Million.

I don't know about 5 mil a year... but somewhere between 6 or 7 mil would be a good deal for Bibby...

  15. Has there been any more updates on Smoove's return? Will he play this week?

I think that we'll be fine without him against the Bucks @ home, even though we lost to NJ @ home. We are desperately in need of some of his energy and hustle because the team is just not nearly as competitive without Josh. We are already losing winnable games (New Jersey, Indiana) and that's the thing that plagued us during all those the bad (non-playoff years).

And for crying out loud, what is the f'n deal with Speed-less Claxton these days?

The last we heard, he strained or pulled his hamstring way back in preseason. I just want to know if he's working out, walking/running, practicing with the team or what! I mean is there any way we could get news on this guys anymore? Should he just retire and allow us to make some other moves that could clean up our team a little more.

    I can's stand Speedy!

The guy is a plague. I don't want him to just retire.... I want him to d.... well.... just use your imagination!

  16. Baron Davis... pipe dream but it would help both teams.

No need to say how he'd help us. Less salary than Bibby too.

For them, a big expiring contract in Bibby as I think he'd be more successful in LA than in Atlanta. Also Bibby and Dunleavy are having issues and they aren't getting any better.

They can give us someone else who they don't want in the deal too. Trade would have to be after Dec 15 though.

Think Sund could get it done?

    I guess I agree!

Hawks really need to get rid of Bibby because he barely fits us and I really don't see Baron as a Clippers offensive orientated player. It would be good for both teams.

I would also include Zaza or Speedy if they wanted. I've looked down on those two ever since they joined the teams. I hate Speedy, don't hate Zaza as much since how he's a center and thinks he can play PG.... always brings a smile to face.

  17. Acie's lack of progress has me a little worried. Everything else on this team is falling into place and Acie is still struggling. Bibby has been solid, avg-ing 15 per game, and Flip has been great, but sooner or later we will need Acie to decide if he is going to be a star in the NBA or just another one who never made it. He STILL looks unsure of himself out there and hasn't developed an outside shot or been driving to the lane. It's confusing, because he has shown us that he has the tools to be really good, but always seems to lack the confidence.

If Acie doesn't improve, there is no way we can trade Bibby this year.

I don't think it's Acie's lack of progress... I believe it's his lack of playing time. I mean seriously! If you want a guy to progress and learn you have to give him chances to go out and explore, so he can progress. You can't just sit him on the bench and expect something great!

  18. Okay, I'm sick of the Atlanta Hawks defense without the inside presence of Josh Smith. :angry22: I mean it's just sad, no one wants to step up to play some D on the inside and stop those easy buckets. I'll hand it to Zaza, he at least tries, but he usually gets called for a foul or a 3 sec. violation ( on both ends if I may say so myself ), so does anyone know about Josh Smith's injury status?
