AJC staff report story on the Cook signing contains some details that make that acquisition still more impressive...

So, it appears the Colonel got Cook for essentially the same make-good contract we'd previously given to Patterson or a number of other training campers in the past.

    I like that.

Here's how I for one am grading specifically the free agent negotiating results of this first off-season for our rookie GM:

    • Cook: A
    • Dorsey: D (.... while others crow about the timing of the signing being block-headed (fanatic), my concern is more basic--why did he merit anything more than the same 2-way contract that so many of his 2nd round peers received, and particularly at a position where we already have 3 players???)
    • Babbitt: A
    • Ilyasova: A
    • Dedmon: A
    • Muscala: A

So, count me, overall, pretty daggone pleased.

This Colonel so far, in this specific job task, reminds me more of a Hogan than of a Klink.

Next year, we'll get a better idea as to whether he's actually good, or if he just benefited from the depressed market. But for now he at least gets credit for not screwing up, as some other front offices seem to have done--arguably none worse than NYK.

Should he have bid for Sap? Not necessarily, but my beef as I loudly and persistently preached was with his being less than consistent with what he said he would do versus what he decided after all to do. I feel like the deal DEN got with him was reasonable, and something we very much could have competed with, if indeed Schlenk had been actually prepared to pursue it as he said he was. Except for one grand failing, Danny Ferry was great for keeping private conversations private. That is arguably Schlenk's greatest area begging for improvement--discipline in what he says publicly, so that no one can feel misled about intentions. Sap's interview with C-Viv after the fact hinted strongly that Sap felt misled. That's all I'm going to say about that.

  2. When will you guys get it in your heads, the hawks are not trying to win they're just trying to fill the roster.

so adding someone the will boost our win total is not happing. look at all the people we have signed so far not one of them is a game changer.

Bud didn't want Howard..why is this so hard to understand?

bud was the one that signed howard.... the new GM didn't want howard get it right. then you got people co-signing

when bud hasn't said a word since we hired the new gm

    here's 2 questions:

    1.  Which is better.. sending Dwight and the 31st pick to Charlotte for Plumlee, Marco, and the 41st pick..  OR  Sitting Dwight for 2 years and letting his deal expire and seeing what trades are available?

Understand... we only saved 3 Million this year... and possibly 11 Million next year.. but we lose 12.5 Million in the third year of Plumlee's deal.

    2.  IS Diamond Stone and a first worth the Capspace that Crawford's contract ate up?

In essence, we paid 14.2 Million this year and 14.5 Million next year for Stone and a late first. ... Is it worth it?

Man I don't care how you say it.  we gave howard away for nothing. drop in the draft to do it. we are tanking that the only way you can rationalize what he did. howard stats 13point 13 rebounds in limited minute put  those up against al horford stats( I have done it not much better) so that means boston should get rid of horford....

we went backwards cuz we didn't have a plan B when al bounced on us. if I was the gm I would have added melo or pg13 all we need in this weak eastern conference  was a proven scorer. not to blow the team up.

lol - If we have the most ping pong balls the lowest we can possibly pick is 4th - even if the system is totally rigged against us.

we should have had KD the year we got stuck with al horford. we had the 2nd most ping pong ball we were hoping for greg oden( lucked out on that one) but we should have had the 2nd pick pick that year

  7. Hope them young boys come out to play ,this loosing with a smile ish says a lot about our fan base. listening  to too much sport talk radio can be bad for you. The reason I say that is because they seem to be very ok with every move that been made by the front office. then they be quick to say "that team wasn't winning a championship anyway so blow it up. like rebuilding guarantee a championship or a trip to the finals. This coming from a team that never done either one. also it reminds me of when they did the same thing with the brave ran all our players out of town talking rebuild. haven't sniffed the post season since... but no ones even bringing that up

So I'm using Hoopshype here which shows Ryan Kelly still on our books at 1.6 million. I'll be subtracting that number. I am also going to ignore cap holds that shouldn't apply after the signing period actually begins. This includes the Tim Hardaway qualifying offer as he will either be a Hawk at a new number or will not be on the team.

So the Hawks Have 7 players (not including Hardaway) under contract. Also, Dunleavy's 1.6 million still counts.

    Kent Bazemore $16,910,112
    Dennis Schröder $15,500,000
    Miles Plumlee $12,400,000
    Marco Belinelli $6,606,060

    Malcolm Delaney $2,500,000
    Taurean Prince $2,422,560
    John Collins $1,936,920
    Mike Dunleavy $1,600,000

    DeAndre Bembry $1,567,200

    Total - $58,107,145

This leaves them a theoretical $40,892,855 to spend.  Assuming the 2 2nd rounders and their stashed Euro make the roster, that's 3x560k each or 1.68 million more.

So we'll have 5 roster slots and $39.2 million to spend. I am going to say the Hawks offer either a solid contract to Nerlens Noel or Kelly Olynyk, Offer between 3-5 million per year for Bogdonvic.......sorry had to puke a bit before continuing typing and offer Hardaway $15 million/year to stay. I can also see them offering $6-$8 million to Illysova to stay.  And that would pretty much eat up the rest of their money.

Hardaway will be another baze watch. everyone screaming pay hardaway I was one of those people until they blow up the team. hardaway will be the highest paid player on our team if that happens. ummm no let him get paid else where we good losing with rookies. I still don't understand 18 mil going to belinelli and plumlee that crazy! but hey im not the gm I just play 2k and make better trades lol

Yeah, sure, except he cleared the Hawks from the one guy who was here for 4 years and got 4 All-Star nominations (from the coaches, mind you), because suddenly he wasn't worth 30 per for 3 more years.

This franchise should NEVER win it all, because it just doesn't deserve it. There's a reason they are the NBA's laughing stock and no decent free agent would like to play in the ATL. That's called 'DISRESPECT'.

Seeing how Al and Paul were treated, I'd be wary of signing with the Hawks as well.

agree 100% like him or not they did Howard dirty.

I don't follow the Braves but I've read they have one of the top farm systems in baseball and a lot of young talent at the major league level right now. Would that be such a terrible place for the Hawks to be? Would you not sacrifice 5 years of being smoked out of the playoffs to have a team with a bright future?

You started by saying you don't follow the brave should have left it as that. they blow up the team because new management said our farm system was shot. so he so called fixed that( which I don't know how you prove such a thing)now or team sucks. no I don't want that for the hawks. I watch ( at least try to watch)the braves the last 5 season and man it's not good baseball. I'd trade it for  90  win post season play any day,

Braves 2.0, get ready for 5 years of crappy play with the hope that one day we will be a consistent playoff team like we are now.

I remember them days when they complained about the brave all ways going to the playoff and losing so they blow it up.(tired of just making it to the post season  was the excuse) haven't been to the post season  since.lol

There were reports that they wanted to pair Al with Dwight and then trade Millsap for other pieces. For whatever reason, they got cheap with Al and blew up their whole offseason plans. So I agree with you there.

Yes I hated last season, they were losing by 30.. 40 points to awful teams. They pulled a few wins out of their ass and those were fun, but overall the year was awful. At least with a losing team, the young guys will get to play and there's a light at the end of the tunnel. With a good team, we'd be thinking about our championship chances. With last year, we had neither. The team wasn't good enough to make it out the second round (unanimously picked against in the media vs Washington) and wasn't bad enough to get a good draft pick (though I have warmed up to John Collins).

I agree with but out of all the team in the playoff last season the hawks played the ONLY  team I was hoping we avoided.

We would have played better against cle, bos may have even beaten the tor or mil we just played against a team we did match up well against. beside im all for the blowing up a team but do it through free agency not the draft.  To win chips you have to spend money! don't say that product we was putting out there is bad then turn around and put an even worse product out there and try to convince me it the better for us in the long run. you can't say you don't like losing but your ok with the product there trying to feed us now. just don't add up.

The arena is already full of empty seats and fills up with other team's colors when the heavyweights come to town. No need for the quotations around mediocre, they won 43 games last year as one of the oldest teams in the NBA. Golden State built through the draft first. If you can convince me that a few superstars want to team up in Atlanta then lets go for it. Sadly, superstars don't want to come here, our only path to getting a superstar is to draft one or trade a massive haul (that we don't have at the moment) for one.

How can I have such high standards? It's more like boredom. 10 years with 1 conference finals appearance and even then they got swept. And now yall want to reup when the rebuild is staring them right in the face? If they brought back Millsap, the team would virtually be the same garbage that they trotted out there last year. Last year was not fun in any shape or form.

So we are blowing up a team because your coach/gm gave money to baze instead of securing al horford. he had no plan B once al bounced. Plus he talked howard into playing for a team that didn't fit his skill set and then blame him when it went south. last year would have been much  different if we had milsap/horford and howard. but lets take it a little further. you hated last season so much that you blow up the team do  what?....lose more then you did last year.

I bet that going to be fun but hey at least well know why we suck...

Hawks was never going to get any closer anyways, they can rebuild and the results will remain the same. In the next 30 years, the city may be lucky enough to have this team gone.

I was right with you until you started talking about the team being gone. and how would the city be lucky without  a basketball team in a major city? that's crazy talk

Gotta rip the bandaid off. Continuing the mediocre path will only lead to less enthusiasm for the team anyway.

The 60 win team had pretty solid attendance, this town will bandwagon if it's good and fun imo.

This is the same BS I keep hearing on the radio (92.9 the game). hawks have NEVER won a title but all of a sudden hawks are to good for just making the playoff ,blowing up a "mediocre " team will get you what?and empty arena or better yet a renovated arena full of the other team colors lol. am I missing something? How can you have such high standers all of a sudden? you have to spend to win in the NBA. ...I.E .....MIAMI,HEAT,GS  ... And just for the record I enjoyed going to the playoff every year and having a chance of winning... now they want me to watch my team struggle cause you can't or don't want to pay for a super star you wanna win a title with average players and the system...gtfo here....

  16. Man they are ripping this team apart and getting no back lash from it. 92.9 the game love the Dwight move ( even though we save no money) they say move on from milsap he's not a max player.. ( where have I heard that one oh yeah al horford ) funny how we shouldn't  pay players max money like were the spur and all we do is win titles. but yet someone else pays them with no problem. then you renovate Phillips only tells me you want the visiting team fans to be comfortable while they bash the hawks heads in every night.  Every game the seats will be filled with the opposing team fans enjoying our new renovated arena.  we could have blow it up no problem but to get me to co sign this BS not happing.
