I think you're overestimating the talent gap here. If anything Trae is even more highlight heavy than Luka is right now. Both their styles of play would significantly impact and offense.

Both players are flawed, if Doncic was THAT much better then the Suns and Kings would be getting a lot more fire for not wanting him at this point. He's not LeBron James, I'm not heartbroken over having one offensively incredible player with defensive questions over the other.

The thing is that this draft is perfectly set up for the Hawks to make several moves that would culminate in a roster featuring:  Collins, Prince, Bamba, Doncic and Young.

The deals are there to be made.  Drafting Doncic and then lazily trading him for Young and other assets that stand questionable chances of panning out, is a big gaff.

The Hawks should finish tonight with the above mentioned starting roster.  The team would surely suffer through at least one dismal season, but in two years could be the fastest rising team in the league.

I don't see why, Trae can be just as good as anyone else.

Yes, Trae could be just as good.  But right now, perception is truth.  Right now, trading Doncic for Young, a player widely believed to be more flawed, would damage the trust of Hawks fans.

Regardless of who is kept, the Hawks will lose a lot of games the next two seasons.  The bitterness of losing will be compounded every night, as Luca is featured on ESPN highlights.

It would be a foolish move.

  3. I am sorry for being so obtuse, but I need to clarify.  Is it going to go down like this?:

We have a deal for Chicago's #7.  The deal involves the Hawks' #19 and #30 picks, Dennis Schröder and some bad contracts going back to the Hawks.

The Hawks use the newly acquired #7 and works a trade with Memphis for their #4.

Memphis gets Parsons off their books, as well as the #7 pick.  The Hawks acquire the #4.

    Hawks' Draft:

#3:  Mo Bamba (the Hawks' BPA)

#4:  Luca Doncic.  They either keep Luca or work a big deal with another team.

    Is that it?

  4. Young has earned the rep of a lousy defender, but was that be design?  He was the only offensive threat on his team.  Asking a freshman to carry the team offensively takes a major physical toll.

Is it possible that his HC directed Young to catch his breath on defense?

  5. I would keep the #3 and go hard after the #4.   Doncic and JJJ.  Bamba would also work, but I still believe JJJ has more potential.  Frankly, I would be happy with either JJJ or Bamba.

The Hawks could end up with a set-up man and a quick big with those two picks......and both of them are young and still growing.

So, what, besides Parsons' contract, would it take to acquire the Memphis pick?

It seems to be the consensus that he’ll be a long-term defensive liability.  I’m a D first type of dude so my feets is freezing.

As skilled as he is no one is projecting Steve Nash level shooting-passing-dribbling: the same guy who killed his teams year after year because he was such a liability on the defensive end even as a great charge-taker (rebounds + steals + blocks= only 3.8 for his career.). Dennis is 4.3 and he’s a shit defender.

Although he’s big as hell (still waiting for his official size) you also can’t project Ben Simmons-like dominance around the paint.  Hell, not even Anfernee Hardaway.  Positionless basketball is good for some.  I can’t see it as a strength for him when his agility relative to NBA players seems lacking.  How much help would you have to give him in front of Oladipo?  Triangle-team?

If he’s as smart as they say he should be able to be serviceable through playing angles with his body and passing lanes with his length.  I’m just shaky on a guy with as many valid Euro-to-NBA question marks with a rookie coach.  Rubio had similar buzz and I have yet to understand why.  If Bud was still in tow I wouldn’t give a damn which of these Blue Chips fell or climbed to us.

He is 19 years old and has been competing against adults for several years.  He has about 2-3 years of growth potential.

This guy can get leaner and more athletic very quickly.  How is he a concern?

It will be 3 or 4 years before the team makes the playoffs. Especially if they're going to try and get even more young players.

If the Hawks make deals for the 3rd and 4th picks of this draft and they manage to move up from the #19, they will compete for the playoffs in three seasons.  By then, they will have four seriously good young players that can attract ANY star free agent that is available.

I cannot give out anymore likes today and I agree. If we take Doncic, a big would be in order. Another option is a less ball dominant guard. Just about any shooting guard could fit and then add in Sexton and Alexander for PG's.

    I like the idea of Doncic ( 6' 8" ) and Alexander ( 6' 6" ) playing together a lot.

Yes, in a quick fix scenario, drafting Doncic and a Big makes sense.

But, keep in mind that the Hawks will not compete in the playoffs next season.  One can argue that it would be better to build the team slowly with the best talent available.   If that best talent is a big, then draft him, but if not, go for the top quality prospect.

There will be time to balance the team's roster.

Great teams who get there, not by way of the draft, but by being so smart to sign all star players:

1st requirement - - Their city MUST be a desireable destination.  Atlanta just doesn't qualify.  We all know this.  Therefore we strike out on this point.

If a team has great all star players, other great players will want to go there so they can play with them.  Our example here would be King James.  We know that players are willing to sign for less to play with him because he can lead them to the playoffs.  Hawks strike out here.  No great all star.

Two down and one to go if we are to score in this inning.  The draft is up.  Our tank has brought us to this position and we hope that this is our golden opportunity to grab that great player that others will want to play with because of who he is.  We have four opportunities this year to get this right.  Four draft picks.  We have extra cap space to relieve the pressure on those opponents hurting.  We hope to gain something here.

A newly rebuilt stadium, a completely re built team with a new head coach and his new assistants.

Hey, I am new here, so I don't know when someone is being sarcastic.  Did you just write that Atlanta is not a desirable city?

I think you meant to write that the Hawks are not a desirable team to join (at the moment).

Atlanta (the city) is a highly desirable city for athletes and anyone with money.

It is true that the Hawks want Trae Young BAD too. He was special in their workout and he amazed everyone with how he passed it, even shot it. Trae is high on their bucket list

Great.  Take Parson's contract, give Memphis #19 and take the #4.  Wait for Ayton and Bagley to come off the board then,

Draft Bamba or JJJ with the #3, and wait for the phone calls with desperate offers for the #4.  If none are appealing, draft Young and be done with it.

    1. His workout for both Atlanta and Sacramento was elite. They worked him out on guard and big areas and he shined better than most guards. This is why Bazemore was like, we gonna be good this year. He saw both Bagley and Bamba and was like, just get one. Only in the organization that was there agreed on those workouts.

    2. Fox. They don't want to take the ball out of his hands.

    3. The players are vouching for Bagley in SAC. All of them including the Serbian one.

    4. He can help them win games next year.

    5. He wants to be in Sacramento. This is big with them. They want people who want to be there.

They moved off of Luka last week. They felt it would take him awhile to adjust to the speed and needed a star day 1.

Atlanta been high on Doncic especially our international scouts and Senlenk. It took the rest of the organization time to catch up and some of the scouts still don't like Luka like that. But Travis does. And Pierce and Peterson do as well. Scouts are human, once they like a guy, they like a guy.

If there is a wildcard for us, it's Bamba. Not Young, not JJJ. If Atlanta gets one of them, it's due to a trade down which doesn't seem likely. I am hearing the top 5 is coming into shape with Memphis being the wildcard there.

So, draft Doncic.  Accept Parson's contract for the #4 and draft Bamba.

Spend the next two seasons developing Doncic and Bamba, while the Parson contract works its way off the books.  By that time, the Hawks will have a very talented set of players:

    Bamba, Collins, Prince and Doncic.

At that time, if a PG has not been developed, sign the top free agent.

Lol honestly I do like him but I don’t want a safe pick which he is

The team is in full rebuild.  What is wrong with drafting a foundation player?

Stars become free agents.  And what do they look for?  A supporting cast of strong foundation players.

I personally don't care which one of these prospects we draft.  All I care about is drafting a mentally tough person that can withstand the losing that will happen for two straight seasons.

Who is the foundation player that can take the losing, and still be loyal to the team and never stop working to perfect his craft?  That is the the guy I want.

F the stats in college, high school or the European leagues.  In the long run, they mean far less than hyped.

Draft the talented prospect that has the character of a champion that rises out of the muck.

  13. To be honest, the clips I have seen of Doncic do not look impressive to me.

I think his ball handling is a bit clumsy.  His shot outside of the arc is not great.  I also think he is flat out slow.  My hope is that he can turn fat into muscle and develop some quickness.

Of course, he is very young and can develop into a sharp shooter from the arc, but right now, I just don't see what everyone else is excited about.
