It isn't that I think he is no good.  It is that I have a similar level of questions that need to be answered about him as I do with healthy people.  I can see a path to him becoming a star but I can also see a path for Doncic, Bagley, Bamba, JJJ, Young, etc.  All of them have varying levels of questions.  Porter is the only one with medical issues so unless I think he is that much better a prospect than the others then I have a hard time leaning towards  him.  One of the reasons I can't say he looks that much better as a prospect is because we didn't get to see him play against quality opposition.  (I don't hold his college games against him at all - he was rusty and recovering.)

Scrimmage at the Team USA vs the world... but he and Sexton put on a show when playing all those top prospects. I'm not looking at the other players. I'm looking at the skill level this dude displayed. That isn't going any where. That's Super Star skills at 18 yrs old.

There's no way he falls to 19. Even at that, I'm pretty sure we're the only team not giving him a serious look smh.

We shouldn't. He's not that good and he has serious injury concerns.

If you read the articular, you will see that the injury isn't as bad as most would think.

Agreed.  This is a price point issue.  At #3, we will have comparable healthy prospects to pick from.  I had performance concerns about him before he got hurt.  Really wished he would have played healthy so we could have seen how his skills have developed and would translate against better competition than the rabble of HS/AAU ball.

I hope you all are right about him not being good but I seriously think you all are wrong. There is a reason why so many are trying to see him. Could be the same reason why the Hawks are known as one of the teams that aren't.... They could be holding their cards close, hoping no one tries to trade up for him.

and it looks like we will know a little more after today.

    • Michael Porter’s pro day/medical evaluations back on for Friday

Teams want more info on Michael Porter‘s back and health. The Bulls got to examine him at a workout, and Porter’s agent sent the medical reports to other teams, which one front office person who saw them told Rob Dauster of NBC Sports they came back “fine.” But teams want their own doctors to have a look — especially after a Friday workout and medical evaluation day for teams was almost cancelled due to hip spasms.

That is back on for Friday, according to Shams Charania of The Vertical at Yahoo Sports.

Michael Porter Jr. has been cleared for second pro day evaluation Friday in Chicago for NBA draft lottery teams, his agency informed teams.

    — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 15, 2018

Teams traveling to Chicago have understood Friday's workout purpose: medical/physical evaluation. Porter is a go for key day ahead of next Thursday. https://t.co/H0JqZDet8j

    — Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) June 15, 2018

What teams see Friday in Chicago will go a long way to determining where Porter gets drafted. Before the workout most projections have him in the 6-8 range of the draft, but climbing. If the doctors give a thumbs up, he could climb.

As pointed out in our breakdown of Porter’s game, if healthy he might be as talented as anyone in this draft. There’s a reason the Kings are interested in him at No. 2. He’s 6’11” but plays like a wing, making him a great modern NBA four who can hit from the outside and has the athleticism to get up and down the floor then finish with authority. Two years ago, in the summer of 2016, he was owning the summer circuit and projected as the No. 1 pick.

Then came 2017 — a back injury forced a microdiscectomy surgery on his back. He never looked right.

That makes Porter the biggest mystery in the draft — healthy and playing at his peak he’s with the elite of this class, but backs are tricky things and can linger. Were the hip spasms tied to the back issue?  There were questions about his handle and first step before this, will his athleticism be limited in any way by this.

The teams will get some answers on Friday. We all will see the results next Thursday at the draft.

I can't lie, this whole business sours me on this kid.  I really think he's trying to depress his value in order to land in CLE.  I don't buy the hip stuff.  Why would his 'camp' leak that?  Sorry, that doesn't come out unless his camp leaks it.

This is gamesmanship to make sure certain teams pass on him.

I agree! That's why I would still draft him. I'm having flashback to when I was a Hornets fan and we traded Kobe because he wanted to go to LA. Then Baron Davis tried to play that same sh*t and Paul Silas was like, NOPE! The Hornets are keeping you.

I know this case is a little different but I have seen too many cases like this happen in the NBA.

I don't think there is a snowballs chance in Hades that Porter will be available anywhere near the 19th pick.  While between is back injury and very limited availability is doing him no favors, the few teams that have worked him out have been raving about him with some media outlets even reporting that Porter is in play for Memphis's pick at 2.

Should that happen, now that Doncic has announced that he is staying in the draft irrespective of team and draft position, my goodness would we both have some unbelievable options.  Heck, the Kings might give us Fox and multiple firsts to get a crack at him.  Saying nothing of many teams and media folks really banging the Bagley drum ever louder.

That would be one heck of a quandary choosing between Luka and Bagley.  On the Doncic front, I have no doubt the marketing department are salivating at the opportunity of having who is called "the most accomplished 19 year old ever".  In addition, by playing in the the Eastern time zone would help to maximize the international audience.  Granted, the home and much of the Eastern Conference  games would be late at night, but at least it would not be a further 3 hours earlier should he end up in Sacramento.

All that said, I would most likely choose Bagley.  While his defense get knocked, he is so young even by one and done standards and with his height and motor, he really could be special.  Averaging that many points on a Duke team lousy with NBA talent is impossible for me to dismiss.

Still want Anton though.  I will grant you this is not a uncommon refrain.

There is talk that we could trade for the 14th pick

I read the ESPN article. I saw where the Kings have been talking about picking him 2nd. NBA teams were feeling very good after seeing his medical records from Chicago. I can't see this guy's talent being over hyped. He has too many basketball people in his life. There is also talk that he is trying to get to a better NBA market. (i.e. Chicago). I also, saw ESPN mention every team in the top 7 but the Hawks are interested in him.

  5. Can you not create a poll on this message board? I wanted to create one to see who the Hawksquawk want the Hawks to draft.

So I guess I will ask for you all to name one player and I will keep count out of...

    ....assuming DeAndre goes 1st.

    Marvin Bagley

    Trae Young

    Jaren Jackson Jr.

    Luka Doncic

    Mohamed Bamba

    Michael Porter Jr.

After reading today's new about MPJ. I'm a little afraid about him now... BUT! I'm sticking with my idea of trading down to get him and an extra pick. If the Hawks have to put him on the self for two years, I'm good with that. They will probably stay in the top 5 of the lottery to get good young players until he is ready. I hope lol

    Pick one player please.

Admin, if you could change this to a poll, that would be great! Thanks

  6. Lets give Steve Kyler our draft board. lol

Two out of four have the Hawks picking MPJ.

    10. SF Kevin Knox, 76ers

    19. SG Donte DiVincenzo, Hawks
    30. PG Jalen Brunson, Hawks

  7. Give me any of these players and I will be happy to ride with it.

Michael Porter Jr, Marvin Bagley III, Mo Bamba, or Trae Young

I would love to see the Hawks draft Marvin Bagley, trade him to whomever pick Michael Porter Jr and pick up an extra 1st rd pick.

I have a feeling now that Bagley will either go 1st or 2nd. If that's the case... I hope the Hawks take a shot on MPJ. I keep reading he has KD talent. Trae has Curry talent. I'm picking KD over Curry All Day! lol

My dream scenario: snag the best bait, Bagley, with the 3rd, trade him back for Très, trade back into top 10 for LaBamba or Porter, wrap it up with Allen as final pick.

I'll buy drinks if the Hawks can put that off too. lol

Here are some highlights from the Alabama game where Sexton supposedly got the better of Trae and he was 'held in check'.   Still he exhibited some great passing and play.

I would love for our PG's off night to be 17/8

To his defense... I'm not a Trae fan (not unless the Hawks draft him lol) but every dog has his day. Every player will have a bad game.

Collins last year barely got any PT early on, even when we were in full blown tank mode

Bembry played lockdown defense on Harden and then sits the next few games

Prince was playing well his rookie year and fought like hell to get PT early on

Those are just a few examples over the past 2 years.  There are certainly more.  I can also pull mountains of threads where Hawks fans were complaining over Bud's rotations and his reluctance to play rooks.

Maybe the owner of the team had something to do with it? #tankmode lol

Exactly who I want. He works out for the Hawks tomorrow.

Porter has not proven anything past high school. Way to risky for me at #3.

Way too risky is probably why I would pick him. Look what NBAdraft.net says about Porter Jr.

Why wouldn't you want to take a chance on a player that could be in KD mold? That is the best comment said of any of these players. This is the reason why you tanked! Take the risk. If you fail, that means you will be back close to this spot again next year. lol

That will be an issue in Atlanta now that Hawks University is in Milwaukee.

This is the biggest fear I have. Coach Bud was a damn good coach. One that I having seen in a long time for the Hawks. I became a believer that whomever we draft, Bud was going to get pretty much all he could from them.

The funny part about this game is that Marvin only played 10 minutes before he got an eye injury. He still almost out-rebounded JJJ who played 24 minutes due to his usual foul trouble. Bagley had 6 rebounds in 10 minutes, 5 were offensive and you want me to believe JJJ getting him off him spot in a highlight was the whole story...

Man, I was like, okay this highlight video is not working in JJJ favor. Where is Marvin in 80% of this clip?

At this point I would be optimistic about drafting any of the top guys (Ayton, Doncic, Bagley, Bamba, JJJ, Young, Porter Jr.). I think Bagley is the safest bet to at least be a good player, but I could see any of the others being better. There's always an element of luck involved.

We are the Hawks! We are going to need more than an element of luck!

Trae Young is only working out for Atlanta, Orlando, Chicago, and New York. Schlenk is a Curry guy, Young has been compared to Curry (although he claims to model his game after Nash which I agree more with).

Schlenk said Hawks have narrowed it down to “3 or 4” players. Hawks sessions next week: Young, JJJ, Bamba, and Bagley. There’s your 3 or 4. Schlenk also mentioned trading back “a couple of spots” if the package was right. Swap with Dallas for their 2019 pick, unprotected? That should convey Top 5 again next year.

So there it is in black and white. If Dallas sweetens the deal enough, Schlenk trades back to 5th and takes Young. If not, he takes Bagley. Bamba or JJJ if Bagley is gone.

If he trades back for Young and is really smart, which I think he is, he then bundles Schröder and the rest of our picks to move back into the top 10 and takes whoever’s left of Bamba, JJJ, Porter, or Bridges.

Well, I guess we're not getting any of these players. Curry never worked out for the GSW. lol
