Hawks guard Joe Johnson will return to the lineup Friday night after missing the past three games with a sprained right thumb.

Johnson practiced with the team Friday morning at the team's shootaround at Philips Arena in preparation for the game against Toronto. His thumb was heavily taped.

"It's alright," Johnson said of his thumb, which he injured last week in the team's win over the Los Angeles Lakers. "It's not where I really want it to be. It's still sore, but that soreness is going to be there for quite some time. Just trying to help the team reach one of our goals, that's trying to solidify the third spot."

With four games remaining, the Hawks are tied with Boston for the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference at 48-29. The Hawks need to finish ahead of the Celtics in order to take the third spot, as Boston owns the tiebreaker by virtue of being a division champion.

Without Johnson in the lineup, the Hawks went 1-2, beating Detroit last Saturday to run their home winning streak to 10, but then losing to Charlotte Tuesday and Detroit Wednesday, which ran their road losing streak to six games.

Johnson, a four-time All-Star, was hopeful his return would be a boost to a team that has lost three of its last four after beating the Lakers.

Johnson said he wanted to "definitely just try to pick the guys up. Me coming back, I think there'll be a lot more energy from us as a team and (as a result of) us playing at home."

Coach Mike Woodson also said that backup center Jason Collins will miss the remainder of the regular season as a result of a foot injury sustained before Wednesday's game at Detroit.

In a related story, Chris Bosh will not play tonight. Even so, this won't be a cakewalk as the Raps are fighting for their playoff lives.

  2. I'd say the slow start had just as much to do with Bibby being out as Joe being out. I can't tell you how many games I've seen this season that Bibby comes out smokin' in the 1st and I think he's gonna explode for a big game only to see him wind up on the bench for the rest of the game.

This might be the last game I ever expect to see something out of Marvin. I thought...Joe & Bibby out, back in North Carolina...he's gotta have at least a decent game right? It's like he's scared to even touch the ball offensively. He lolli-gags around the 3-point line, defers wide-open jump shots, and rarely even cuts to the basket anymore. And people are scared that sending him to the bench would crush his confidence? What confidence?

  3. If we had takenCP3, chances are very good that the Hawks would not have signed JJ to play PG for them.

That didn't work out either, did it. Now, if the Hawks had CP3 instead of MW and no JJ and CP3 out injured,

where do you think the Hawks would be?

In the crummy Eastern Conference? I'd say still in the playoffs.

NEW YORK, April 5, 2010 -- Atlanta's Al Horford, Boston's Ray Allen, Cleveland's Antawn Jamison, Denver's Chauncey Billups, Houston's Luis Scola and Phoenix's Grant Hill were selected by a five-member panel of former players as divisional winners for the 2009-10 NBA Sportsmanship Award.

The NBA Sportsmanship Award, designed to honor a player who best represents the ideals of sportsmanship on the court, is voted on by NBA players. The NBA will announce the winner after the regular season.

The 2009-10 NBA Sportsmanship Award winner will be presented with the Joe Dumars Trophy, named after the Hall of Famer and former Detroit Pistons great who played 14 seasons in the NBA and was the recipient of the inaugural NBA Sportsmanship Award in 1996. The six-time All-Star was selected in honor of his distinguished and dignified career and for symbolizing the tradition the NBA wants to recognize with this award.

Former NBA players Mike Bantom, Mark Jackson, Tom "Satch" Sanders, Kenny Smith and Eric Snow selected the six divisional winners from a pool of 30 team nominees. Each team nominated one of its players for this award.

The annual award reflects the ideals of sportsmanship -- ethical behavior, fair play and integrity -- in amateur and professional basketball, a key focus of the league's NBA Cares program efforts.

Following is a list of the all-time winners of the NBA Sportsmanship award:

    Congrats Big Al!

  5. Yes, let's just disregard everybody else on our team. We're going to the playoffs because we drafted Marvin frickin' Williams.

And let's also disregard the fact the CP3 has been injured for most of the season and is still playing hurt right now.

The fact of the matter is getting to the playoffs shouldn't be good enough. You draft right and most of us are talking championship right about now.

  6. When Josh SMith gets the ball on the outside the fans should start cheering "Air Ball" before he even shoots. Maybe that would make him understand how bad an idea shooting the ball is.

The whole arena already screams "Noooooo" before he even starts thinking about taking a jumper.

Of course that doesn't stop him one bit. Do we admire his confidence or pity his stupidity?

  7. Just came home from the game, hype as hell to see the highlight, and what do I see? ESPN says none of it should of counted because Joe traveled on the last play. Are you kidding me? They even froze it up step-by-step with a counter on each of his steps. Then the anchor proceeded make it even look worse by going "There's 1 step, 2, 3, 4, 5, well you get the idea." But when Lebron take 8 steps on his crab-dribble all we can do is "witness."

Was it a walk? Maybe by current NBA "rules", but it's not something that the stars don't get away with on a nightly basis.

...Ahhhh, they just played it again and Scott Van Pelt called it "19 steps" this time.

  8. To foul or not to foul was debateable, but it definitely worked out in our favor. Craw made the right choice goin to Smoove too. Wilson Chandler just made a great play on the block.

It shouldn't have come down to that though. We settled for way too many dumbass jumpshots in the last two minutes.
