    I wouldn't have minded being Toronto's salary dump for a 1st and 2nd.

I dont undrstand why we cant do deals like this one. How perfect would it have been to get DMC (as old and worn out as he may be) to teach his heir Prince the culture and magic of the 60-win Hawks. I dont care if he's an expensive player coach its better than buying out Jamal with no additional value. It would make Bud at least marginally happy, and we get a first AND a second rounder in the process. But no we would rather pay 18-20 mil for Diamond stone and Jamal's contract over the next couple years.

  2. I hope he grew out of some of his weaknesses from college by now (work ethic, effort, immaturity, inconsistency). Does not sound like the type of player Bud wants to babysit.

    Quote

Strengths: Smooth freshman big with nice combination of size, strength and skill ... Very sure-handed player, catches almost every pass thrown his way ... Can snatch rebounds away from opponents' in traffic ... Has a very long reach (7'3.5" wingspan) ... Well put together physically at 6'11" and 255 lbs ... Solid athlete with a quick second jump ... Runs the floor well for a big man ... Possesses good footwork in the post ... His drop step is a very capable go-to move at the next level ... Already developed a good range of interior offense ... Understands how to finish below the rim well ... Has a great blend of strength and agility to his game ... Will often take advantage of a mismatch by playing "Bully Ball" against smaller defenders ... Good free throw shooter shooting at an 80 percent clip ... Has shown that he is also a threat in pick and pop plays ... Nice form on his shooting mechanics could possibly extend range to NBA three with practice... Does a good job of not giving ground to his man as a post defender ... His length can cause opposing players to alter their shots at the rim ... Has the tools to become an effective defender against perimeter players in pick and roll defense ... When fully locked in has a junkyard dog type quality and ferocity to his play ... Confident player who believes in his abilities ...

Weaknesses: Despite being very good at a young age, his upside is limited to a degree by his lack of great athletic ability ... Attitude is at best "immature" ... Can often be caught drifting or sleepwalking through numerous possessions ... Developed a bad reputation for his practice habits early in his college career ... Too often his motor runs hot and cold ... If the offense isn't running through him, do not expect him to give great effort or make much of an impact ... Will lose focus and let smaller defenders get him out of position ... Despite possessing great size and length he is no better than average as a rebounder ... Most of his rebounds come off of his own misses ... On the defensive glass he doesn't box out as much as he should, often leading to him losing rebounds to an opponent ... Not an elite level athlete. His length and strength makes up for it but he doesn't run fast or explode off the floor particularly well ... Needs to work on finishing through contact ... Has trouble scoring against longer defenders ... Defenders that match his strength are able to keep him out of the paint ... Improvement as a screener is necessary if he is to be successful at the next level ... Should not be viewed as a rim protector ... Lacks maturity and is prone to losing his cool as he did in the game against Wisconsin, slamming an opponents head against the floor, and drawing a one game suspension ...

  3. Ferry got Bud to leave the Spurs after 17 seasons. Bud probably had plenty of opportunities elsewhere but he chose the Hawks and Ferry had a large part in that. Bud and Ferry built this team with the type of players Bud wanted to develop.

Bud and his staff went through all the work of developing them, seeing them blossom into a 60 win team and validating his hard work, philosophy, and selections. As years go by, one by one, each leave the Hawks.

Now a new GM is in town, and my feeling is Bud might not have as much say in the decisions Schlenk makes as he did with his buddy Ferry. So the question now is, will Bud have the patience to start all over, knowing what he once had?

If the answer is no, I do think that 60 win team was a bit of a curse.

  4. Atlanta did not invest in SportVU. The team dragged its feet on SportVU and had the entire league pay for it when the NBA decided it was best to put it in all the arenas instead of the twenty or so they were in at the time. We had multiple threads about this and how cheap the previous ownership was being.

Did not know that but that doesn't surprise me much. Lets see if Ressler can do better.

Just want to see our new owner drop some cash on something more pressing than a Bud Light "Down for Whatever" section of the arena.

  5. What does it take to get a D-league team? Does it take a while to apply for one? It seems like its a definite need if we are a team focused on player development. With all the potential gems we like to find from other teams/overseas it should be one of our foremost goals this year. Especially before we drop cash on a new stadium or renovations. I remember we made an investment on the SportsVU analytics system shortly after Ferry came in, surely we can fork over the cash for a D-league team! Where else are we going to develop the likes of Patterson, Tavares and GR3?

  6. 5 of which should belong gone by 15............so he is 7 and 8 on your list.

Well with the rumors of us potentially moving up, I figure I put all the guys im high on, even if they sound dream scenario-ish.

Guys who seem to be in and around the 15 area that I would like:

    D. Booker

    R. Vaughn

    J. Anderson

    R. Hollis- Jefferson

To be honest if given the chance I think we should definitely move up. We wont be this near 10-13 range again so we might as well cash in on it.

  7. This is why Gearon got sent to the principal's office.  Silver was not happy with Gearon using negative coverage of the team in the press as a tool in Gearon's fight with Levenson for control of the team.

But in actuality what do you think Silver did? Gearon still got his way, ousted the guy he hated, and is festering around like a latent disease, probably waiting for the right moment to attack Ressler when he least expects it.

I really really wonder why Ressler who probably has dealt with his share of snakes in the realm of Private equity for 25 years decided to have ANYTHING to do with Gearon.

  8. I cant help but think of the multiple reports of the Hawks being linked to Kristaps Porzingis back in 2014 in relation to now. Say what you will about Danny Ferry's US talent picks but he has been money on those overseas picks. Look at the value he would have got at the 15th pick if Kristaps would have stayed in the 2014 Draft.  The kid is shooting up the draft board and killing his workouts.

We wouldn't have wasted a pick on Adreian Payne either. I am willing to bet this was Ferry's first pick but he withdrew 10 days before the draft. This with the combination of Dario Saric being sniped by the Sixers probably forced Ferry into picking his 3rd or 4th choice in the draft in Payne.

"Kristaps Porzingis (7'1, 220 pounds) was shooting up draft boards and considered a first-round selection for the 2014 NBA Draft--including rumors that the Atlanta Hawks among others were pushing for his agent to keep him in the draft."

"Adreian Wojnarowski of Yahoo was first to report the news, but this is a move that could potentially change the course of Danny Ferry and company. There was substantial groundswell that the Hawks could be zeroing in on Porzingis with their first round pick, and even if that was more chatter than anything else, it certainly seemed like a reasonable fit for Atlanta."

"Porzingis has reportedly received assurances he'll be selected in the top-15 of the draft as enticement to stay in at the June 16th deadline according to sources close to the situation, and still needs to decide if he wants to accept that. He would likely stay another year in Spain and come over in 2015. It's possible that with another year of seasoning Porzingis could be selected much higher than this, but there are no assurances of that materializing. The Hawks have shown no qualms in the past about doling out promises to international prospects (for example Giannis Antetokounmpo last year), and many NBA teams feel strongly that they are the ones who offered him the guarantee."

  9. Regardless of what Schulz thinks, I just don't see the new ownership really parting ways with Ferry. Business wise, they have to weigh the lesser of two evils:

    1. Experience criticism from the media, naysayers, whomever for keeping Ferry (this will pass after 2-3 months)

    2. Rid of Ferry and have him implement a similar game plan elsewhere (while targeting similar players), potentially loose Bud after his contract, loose a man that obviously understands how to manipulate the salary cap so that is it flexible long term. Even if Bud and Wilcox run the team, Bud will be focusing less on what he is good at: Coaching.

One of these options has far less negative implications for the long term of the team. Ferry was forgiven by the man he wronged, publicly supported by Andrew Young, Magic Johnson, the commissioner himself, Adam Silver AND traveled to Africa for NGO work.  I don't think the organization would explode if he was rehired.

The owners are all businessmen/women, and smart ones at that. I have confidence they will either keep Ferry or keep him around as a ghost consultant.

  10. I don't mind the lime green as long as it is paired with a good contrasting color (I think with the red it looks horrible). I was always a huge fan of the old school Pistol Pete Jersey. The lime green with an updated Navy would look awesome (Sort of like the Seahawks color scheme).

We have a ton of old color combos to get creative with, if we want to go the throwback route. I found this awesome timeline, a bit dated but shows what we have had in the past.

  11. As much as I want to believe that the NBA does not have a hand in swaying result or affecting the game in some way, I cant help but think of the 2007 Donaghy Scandal. Dude knew 70-80% of the time who would win the game based on who was going to ref the games. To this day that is mind boggling to me.

Who knows what sort or biases the NBA or refs have these days, especially against a small market team like the Hawks.

Btw 60 minutes still has the whole special up on their site, for those who need a refresher.

  12. ............BUDENHOLZER please call POP!!!!! I can imagine them having late night long conversations on how to DESTROY LEBRON... ...... Watch out lebron you bout to see some evil mastermind crazy bleep*

I always wondered if this would happen though. I am sure Pop is rooting for Bud now that the Spurs are out.

  13. I agree I was going to be very upset if we dropped 2 at home. But I would be more angry at the fact that it would be proving the "typical" fickle Atlanta fan right. I cringe anytime I hear an Atlantian say "well this is typical atlanta, always choking in the playoffs."

Coming from a background that believes heavily in stats and science I hate it when fans somehow attribute past occurrences of ALL Atlanta teams to the current season. So when the Hawks do struggle it irks me even more that it's making fans ever so fairweather.

We got a win and we will finally get caught up on some rest till Saturday. I think we will come back refreshed and knowledgable with film Bud has analyzed.

  14. My first question to Antony would be why he has a backstabbing, conniving asshole that blackmails other owners to stay within his ownership group...

If that gets answered in the right way, then I'll be OK with this. As is, Gearon is a prick. I'm still not happy.

To be honest Gearon still being apart of this organization worries me greatly. I'm not sure how many voting rights / decision making he has but the simple fact that he is apart of the group will have every new owner constantly looking over their backs.

Its like when the bad guy get really injured at the end of a movie but does not quite die so that it leaves the possibility of him coming back to mess things up again (See Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I and II from the 90s).

WHY WOULD A NEW OWNERSHIP ALLOW FOR THAT !?!
