First, Atlanta's fate is having cap-space and not being able to convince free agents to sign with a losing organization; therefore, they have to make trades for players with reasonable salaries to acquire talent until they become a winning team that attracts other players. It is likely that Al could leave the ATL for a big dollar contract and leave the Hawks without anything to show for him. Further, Chris Bosh went to school at GT, has 2 more years on his contract, and would love to be in his hometown. With Bosh and Q instead of Smith, Childress, and Harrington, financially only increase payroll by about 2 mil and these players are locked for the next two years. Essentially, trading Al for Q (with Al being more talented, but Q being signed for 'reasonable' over the next 4 years plus plays defense with better outside shot and played well with JJ) and Childress/Smith for Bosh (which I can't imagine anybody wouldn't want to do as he is a stud and they are only potentially studs). A front court of Zaza, Bosh, Q with JJ and whoever at PG would be tall, athletic, good shoters with inside game and slashing ability. Why Toronto: Two fold - Childress and Smith have an extra year on Bosh on rookie contract so possibly they develop and then are trade bait to acquire already signed players to play in Toronto (honestly, who wants to sign and play in Toronto). Also, gets them out from under Jalen's contract by acquiring Penny's ending contract. Why NY: Isiah has yearned for Al, and to acquire him he must swallow Jalen's contract for 1 year, which he has contemplated in the past and would add obvious pop to his currently disappointing lineup. Thoughts? Financially this trade goes through. Another thought, ATL trades Tony Delk (expiring contract) to DET for Carlos Arroyo. DET needs some salary cap space to sign Ben Wallace at the end of the year and Arroyo gets few min esp with Lindsay Hunter still present. Plus, Delk adds pop to the lineup. For ATL, Arroyo has 3 more years at 4 mil each and would be a decent PG for a team without one.

Arroyo is a solid point guard with decent size and a pass first attitude, plus he is signed for the next 3yr at 4mil per; if he is no good for us, he is cheap and tradeable asset as great backup. Olowokandi is a waste, but he is a big man on a reasonable contract with next year being his contract year- so on a bad team, he may put up good numbers and have trade value at the deadline with his expiring contract, plus Atlanta will not use all of its cap room. Ebi is young with upside with little contract. We upgrade 2nd pick. Detroit Trades: Carlos Arroyo, 1st Round Pick (26), Coleman's Contract Detroit Receives: Al Harrington, Atlanta's 2nd Round Pick (31) Why? No brainer, they need depth on their bench and get it now with Harrington; they have a backup at PG with Hunter and Harrington has only 1 year on his contract and they will then need capspace for resigning Prince and Wallace. Trading 1st round pick frees up capspace b/c 2nd round contract is non-guaranteed money, while 1st round is guaranteed. Minnesota would love to get rid of Olowokandi to get his money off the books and have more capspace to keep Garnett happy. Biaw is cheap with some upside. Hawks need to play the draft right - New Orleans has stated that SF is the position they need and want, but Charlotte has also expressed interest in that position as well as a UNC player. So, trade 1 is as follows: (if lottery goes according to rankings) Atlanta Trades: #1 pick, the 1st pick of 2nd Round, and Diaw Charlotte Trades: #3 pick and #13 pick Why: Charlotte really wants Marvin Williams, and if they stay at #3, New Orleans will take him. Theo recently signed a contract extension that has 3 years remaining after this year with approx 35 million. I agree that is way too much for Theo, but it is only 5 mil more next year once lose Tony and Predrag's contracts. Further, he is a defensive minded, long, athletic 7 footer with a fair offensive game. Lastly, Portland gets out of his huge contract (saves 25 million) since they are starting Joel Pryzbilla and Theo is coming of the bench. Would I prefer Chandler, Curry, or Brown - sure, but they will be more money and require 6 years, and who is to say they will ever mature if you give them that many years at so a huge dollar figure. Portland would have cap space coming available if they trade Theo, somebody who is obviously not in their future with Pryzbilla's performance, but Atlanta would not take Theo's contract without enticement of their pick this year. Atlanta gets more cap room in free agency, but more important shows players they are committed to winning; continually trading to rebuild leaves an impression of not wanting to win in organization; Donyell is experienced big body who bangs and would be great body off bench; Diaw is not really in future plans with Smith, Harrington, Childress, Smith at SG and SF Toronto loses Marshall's 5.3mil contract, but gains Crawfords (3.25 this year, then FA) and Diaws (1.1 this year and next) ~ essentially a negative transaction in cash, but gives them a "free year" of Diaw to develop. Marshall is not playing a huge role on the team anyways and allows team to get younger for a player they will lose in FA.

And draft a star PG with top 1-3 pick this year. Philly Trades: Glenn Robinson Samuel Dalembert Philly Receives: Antoine Walker Why: Walker worked under O'brien in Boston and he was great. He has been solid this year. They are trying to get rid of Robinson anyways. Indy is trying to trade up to get Luke Jackson (at 7 from Chicago). So, we should say we are planning on taking Jackson and trade #6, #34 and Alan Henderson for Al Harrington, Fred Jones, Scott Pollard and #29. This will cost us 5 million more than keeping #6 and Alan. Then, we go aggressively after Kenyon Martin in free agency and draft a big at 17 (Al Jefferson, David Harrison, Pavel Podkolzine, Robert Swift, etc). Plus, still talent at 29. and our 2 second round picks. This gives Billy Knight a team that will go up and down the court, defend, will be long and athletic and at least exciting next year. Plus, this trade will not damage our caproom for next offseason b/c Pollard, Harrington, and Jones will be going all have 2 years left on contract and will make them good trading assests next offseason to teams trying to get under the cap for the following season.
