Ok I haven't posted in a really long time. I still read the forum quite a bit, but I became a bit disgusted with the way the Hawks squandered their draft picks on busts for the most part and built a team that once again had to be taken apart and put back together.
Now there is a breath of fresh air... back to square 1 possibly. I think Danny Ferry has done an awesome job getting rid of bad contracts and putting the hawks in a position to start over.
I really like the hiring of Budenholzer because I love the spurs brand of basketball. I do think that building the team in the Spurs image would be quite hard and I'm sure Ferry and Budenholzer understand that. It's not like you can just go out and draft or sign a players like Tim Duncan and Tony Parker. The spurs have excellent coaching and go after players that fit in their system that's undeniable, but they also had some very good fortune in having the no.1 overall pick and Duncan in the draft that year. He is an all-time great and we aren't getting a Tim Duncan. However I do think Horford could serve as Tim Duncan Lite. I like the idea of building a team with guys who are competitive and winners. Maybe not having the most talented guy at every position but guys who fill the right role and are tough guys who go out there and battle every night because it is in their nature and would be competing just as hard in their field if they weren't a basketball player.
Years ago... I posted on this forum that it would be a mistake to draft Marvin because he didn't have that competitive drive and the killer instinct to become a great player. There were several stories I read about him that were major red flags in that department. I was totally right. He was a wuss and a total bust. I don't want nice guys. I want guys that will go out there and destroy people on a nightly basis. I want guys that hate losing, guys that never want to come out of a game, guys that will do anything to win.
Dwight Howard does not fit that bill. Dwight Howard is a goofball. I think Dwight Howard spends more time working on his impressions of Van Gundy and Barkley than he does on his free throws. Dwight Howard likes going on television shows and wants to be some kind of comedian apparently. That's a great attribute in a person and I love people that are funny and easy going. I hate that in a basketball player or any other athlete. Can you imagine Michael Jordan or Larry Bird or even Kobe Bryant going on some foreign television show with a woman's wig on? Dwight Howard did that. I don't want that guy on the Hawks.
Also... I'm from Atlanta I have lived in Atlanta my entire life. I love Atlanta. Dwight Howard also grew up in Atlanta but seems to have no desire to play for his hometown team. That also is a red flag. He doesn't have that hometown pride. If he doesn't like Atlanta and doesn't want to represent his hometown. Fine... I don't want a goofball like him anyway. He doesn't show the type of loyalty and competitive spirit that I think defines a real Champion. He went to LA with a team that already had some very good players on it and they got worse. That is not a good sign. He also was a huge distraction and just really screwed up that team.
Chris Paul is a competitor. I like Chris Paul and would take him in a second, but if the Hawks need to take a few years to rebuild Paul won't have any interest in coming here. That is fine with me... I can wait a few years to see what Ferry and Budenholzer can put together.
Go to Houston Dwight. You won't ever win anything but you aren't a winner anyway. You can do commercials and TV Shows and maybe even some Movies. The press will be easy on your fragile ego and there won't be any pressure. Go to Houston. As an Atlantan I can honesty say I don't want someone like you representing my City. You goofball.

The negativity really sucks. The nets only won the game because several of their players played above their heads all at the same time. Devin Harris was hitting jumpers all over the place, and Brook Lopez was playing like Tim Duncan. I do not think they played well because of the Hawks not playing adequate defense. I think they just happened to play really well. Unfortunately for the Hawks they did so at the same time, and in last nights game. I Predict the Hawks will beat the shite out of them tonight.
I think we all knew the hawks weren't going to go undefeated this season, but if someone had told you they would start the season at 6 - 2 with this brutal schedule... I don't think too many people would have been disappointed.
The Hawks are GOOD.
I take back everything I said... The Hawks still suck

I just read on ESPN that the bulls are about to sign Luol Deng to a contract worth like 71 Million for 6 years with incentives that could put it over 80 million. The hawks may have made a big mistake not signing smith sooner. Now smith may want more money, because he is obviously worth more than Deng. He has better statistics in every category.
-
I totally agree with this being a punk move... Where is his competitive spirit? So... he gets more money, but now he is playing against inferior competition. In all honesty... if he doesn't have the desire to be an NBA champion ( which is the only true professional basketball championship ) then I don't even want him on the Hawks. Good riddance softy... go play in the soft Euroleague where you will fit in much better. Maybe he was concerned that his frail body would not hold up in the NBA much longer.

I love that plan...
JJ and Livingston could be the best backcourt in the league if Livingston can stay healthy, the hawks would basically have 2 point guards on the floor, but livingston would allow JJ to concentrate more on scoring. The more I see Smoove play the more he looks like a small forward to me, I am just not that impressed with Marvin, he may end up being a good player but if they could get Livingston for him, I would do it in a heartbeat. JO and Smoove could be the best forward duo in the league too...

I actually had a dream last week similar to this, except in my dream they got even luckier and got the 1st overall pick, and they drafted Morrison. I'm totally serious, but for me it was a good dream. I hope they get Morrison, they would have to make some moves though, trading Marvin and Al would be a good start.
-
I don't really like the trade for O'neal because he is making too much money, the Hawks wouldn't have anything left. They have more holes to fill than at power forward, which smoove could handle im sure.
This is pretty far fetched, but this would be my perfect offseason.
Salim and Marvin to Seattle in a Sign and Trade for Wilcox
Al to the Bulls for their 2nd first rounder
Draft Morrison, Rondo, Craig Smith
Sign Jason Terry
JT/Lue/Rondo
JJ/Donta
Chill/Morrison
Smoove/Smith/Batista
Wilcox/Pachulia

Yeah that may be a reach, but I was talking absolute best case scenario, considering his age and experience, it's possible he will coninue to improve, but more than likey i see him as a 18/9/4/3 during the peak of his career. That still isn't half bad...he would be an allstar for sure.

Yeah Josh has been cluth, and has really surprised me with his 3 point shooting, but the scouting reports on him coming out of high school said he had the range to be a decent 3 point shooter.
The part of his game that has impressed me the most in the 2nd half of the season is his passing ability. Some people don't seem to realize it, but Josh is a good passer, and has good court vision. When his ball handling comes around a little more he could possibly average 5 apg. I think that it isn't out of the realm of possibility that in a few years the best case scenario stats for Josh could be something like 20ppg 10rpg 5apg 4bpg which would make him an overall top 5 player in the league.
-
I was checking out Josh Smiths stats on realgm and compared them with Kirilenko over the last 20 games...and over the last 20 he has pretty much given the Hawks Kirilenko type stats
Last 20 games: 15ppg 8rpg 4apg 3bpg
Last 10 games: 16ppg 8rpg 4apg 3bpg
Last 5 games: 19ppg 10rpg 5apg 4bpg
Kirilenko's stats
Last 20 games: 14ppg 8rpg 5apg 4bpg
Last 10 games: 17ppg 8rpg 5apg 4bpg
Last 5 games: 16ppg 8rpg 5apg 3bpg
He wasn't kidding when he said he was patterning his game after Kirilenko huh? I think with Al gone, next year Josh could average 15ppg 9rpg 4apg 3bpg which is basically the same as what Kirilenko has averaged the last 3 seasons, but Josh has potential to be better than that, since he is 4 years younger than Kirlenko.

I think you are right that the Hawks will end up with a pick between 5 and 7. Bargnani will probably be gone before the Hawks pick, so that pretty much leaves Splitter and Rondo as the only 2 players left I would like to see them draft that high.
Personally I hope they take Splitter, because he is a 7 footer thats known for being a tough defender in the paint. From what I have read about him, and from the few highlights I have seen of him, he seems to be pretty athletic for a guy that size.
Rondo definitely has the skills and athleticism to be a really good point guard, but every time I have watched Kentucky this year Sparks is running the point for some reason, so I haven't been able to really get a good idea of how good Rondo can be, but he looked good at the point at times last year, and he had huge assist numbers in high school. I assume since he played with Josh Smith, he probably already has a good chemistry with Josh, which would be a good thing if the Hawks draft him.

You might say that...I was pretty shocked to see Bernard Butler and Johnny Marr on here. The Smiths are my favorite.

I have said this before, Smoove's passing ability is underrated...he can pass very well for his position, with smoove, marvin, chill, joe and a decent point guard, this team is going ridiculously good at passing the ball, and the best thing is...none of those guys are selfish at all, they all seem willing to give up the ball to the player with an open shot. That's pretty rare these days, I think BK has done an excellent job at finding players who are talented in lots of areas, smart, and play team ball.
-
Quote:I like Aldridge and as much as I like Morrison, it'd be tough to take him with the log-jam we have at the 3.
But if Chill and Harrington were gone, there would be no log jam at the 3, there would only be Marvin so they would actually need another 3
-
Tim Thomas is in the last year of his deal, obviously the Hawks wouldn't resign him...So he would only be on the team for the rest of this year.
I like Childress, but I would rather have TJ Ford, since we need a point guard, and he is a good one.
Adam Morrison isn't Larry Bird...but he is very very good, and he wouldn't be taking Marvins minutes, he would be taking the minutes that Childress was getting before he was traded to the Bucks...Marvin would be getting starters minutes at the 3...
Don't want Dwight.

No I would take Lebron... Lebron may not be Michael Jordan but he is light years ahead of Dwight. Lebron is an all-around player and has more natural basketball talent than anyone in the league except maybe Kobe and Wade. Dwight can't do half the things Lebron can do, and while Dwight does have a few qualities such as rebounding and blocking shots that are better than Lebron... As a complete player he isn't even in the same ballpark and can't put his team on his back the way Lebron can. Lebron can play any position on the court on offense or defense.
If not for Bob Sura we might have Lebron right now... oh well...
What I said about Dwight is true. He is a goofball and he won't ever be a champion because he doesn't have the personality of a champion. He has the personality of a goofball that i'd probably love to hang out with, but wouldn't want as the start player on my favorite basketball team.
