Al Harrington is still searching for his shot and isn't rebounding or passing too much in his 39 minutes per game of time. Everyone else on the team, so far, is too young or too old to do much of anything. ------------------------------------------------------------ THE DAILY (11-8-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_10280.shtml Atlanta Hawks: Though the Hawks are now 0-3 following weekend losses to Seattle 106-85 and the Lakers 106-90, there is some progress to report. The Hawks have increased their scoring each game, from 82 to 85 and now to 90 points, but no opponent has outscored Atlanta's previous opponent. At this rate, it will take another three games before the Hawks start winning games, and about five games before the Hawks start blowing people out.

Only two players were on last year's roster, which you know is a good thing if you caught any of Atlanta's games last season. Antoine Walker and Al Harrington should combine for 40 points a game. One thing to watch: Does Walker, who is in a contract year, have what it takes to be a team leader? ------------------------------------------------------------ The Way I See It... (10-31-04). http://www.wsbtv.com/sports/3877931/detail.html Give general manager Billy Knight credit for rebuilding the Atlanta Hawks. They may not be very good for a while but they will be different. And with this franchise...different is good. The "new look" Hawks open the season on November 3rd in Phoenix. A few days ago, the team emailed me the following. It's not exactly a stirring endorsement of the Hawks' talent but makes for interesting reading. The NBA has announced results of the third annual NBA.com GM Survey. The exclusive survey provides fans with an inside look into the minds of NBA decision-makers on the 2004-05 NBA season. Among the results: * Al Harrington (37% of the votes) was voted as the player most likely to have a breakout season in 2004-05. * Josh Smith (16%) was named the rookie most likely to be a "sleeper" success. * Josh Childress tied for fourth (5%) as to who will win Rookie of the Year. * Al Harrington and Antoine Walker received votes as the most underrated player acquisitions. * Boris Diaw received votes as the international player most likely to have a breakout season. * Former Hawks' second-round pick (in 2002) David Andersen, currently playing in Russia, tied for fifth (5%) as the best international player NOT in the NBA. * Kevin Willis received 5% of the votes as the active player who will make the best head coach someday. ------------------------------------------------------------ New approach in the NBA (10-31-04). http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian...13748249471.xml Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Woodson has seen how far the right players with the right attitude in the right system can go in the NBA playoffs: Right to the title. Before joining the Hawks this season, Woodson spent three years as an assistant under Larry Brown, including last season with the NBA champion Detroit Pistons. Now the head coach of his own team, Woodson said he wants the Hawks to emulate the Pistons' selflessness. "We won the title with 12 guys that just played together on both ends of the floor, particularly the defensive end," Woodson said. "I think teams are going to start looking in that light, in terms of trying to build a team. I'm certainly trying to do that here in Atlanta. "I really don't need superstars. I just need 12 guys on the same page and all striving for the same thing. In doing that, hopefully you'll win your share of games and get into the playoffs. And once you get there, anything's possible." ------------------------------------------------------------ Heat won't get stuck in no-fun zone (10-31-04). http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/basketb...sfl-heat31oct31,0,5838785.story?coll=sfla-sports-heat It's a product: The irony is that last season's Heat serves as the model for some of this season's rebuilding teams. Atlanta, for example, would very much like to emulate the 2003-04 Heat. "I think people want to watch a fun style," Hawks General Manager Billy Knight said. "I think that's important. I think all of that is more advantageous to the whole atmosphere in the building. So that's what we want to do. We want to have a good team, but we want it to be a fun game." There is one exception, though, Knight said, and the Heat has that exception. "You want it to be a fun team for the most part, unless you have such a dominant talent that you can play any way you want to play and get a dominant reaction that way," he said, practically describing the Heat's addition of O'Neal. ------------------------------------------------------------ Eastern Conference (10-31-04). http://www.oregonlive.com/sports/oregonian...27309129530.xml ATLANTA HAWKS Coach: Mike Woodson, first season 2003-04 record: 28-54 Playoff history: The Hawks have missed the playoffs the past five seasons. Their last appearance was in 1998-99, when they lost to Detroit in the first round. (Odds: 150-1) Key acquisitions: PG Kenny Anderson, SG Jon Barry, SG Josh Childress, C Jason Collier, PG Tony Delk, SF Al Harrington, SF Josh Smith, SF Donta Smith, PF Antoine Walker Outlook: The Hawks overhauled their roster, acquiring Harrington from Indiana in the deal that sent Stephen Jackson to the Pacers, then trading for Walker and Delk in the deal that sent Jason Terry, Alan Henderson and a 2007 first-round pick to Dallas. Add first-round picks Childress and Smith, and Atlanta has a group that, on paper, looks significantly stronger than last season's team. But as with any rebuilding project, it remains to be seen how well the new pieces fit together. ------------------------------------------------------------ Journey has made Jackson appreciate shot with Pacers (10-31-04). http://www.fortwayne.com/mld/journalgazett...ts/10063197.htm

Not that there's anything wrong with getting involved with your community. Hell no, I applaud that to the nth degree. More minutes also means more opportunities to score and to lead. Harvey spent most of last year with the Suns and was able to help the team when Amare was out with injuries. Harvey was signed by the Hawks because of the recent injury to Chris Crawford that will keep him out for the year. Harvey will see lots of time as he will be the main backup for Antoine Walker. ------------------------------------------------------------ Woodson, Mitchell have tough tasks ahead (10-24-04). http://msn.foxsports.com/story/3094162 Mike Woodson, Atlanta: He's already been in the league for 19 seasons — as a player with six teams (1980-91), Woodson scored 14.0 ppg, and he also served as an assistant at Milwaukee (1996-99), and Cleveland (1999-01), but most significantly under Larry Brown at both Philadelphia (2001-03) and Detroit (2003-04). Even so, Woodson enters the current season as a rookie coach. He certainly knows his Xs and Os — but the ultimate test of a new coach is his ability to handle (or mishandle) losing streaks and the inevitable confrontations with his players. Too bad there's no way of preparing to deal with these eventualities. Despite his scoring prowess as a player (he tallied a career-high of 18.0 ppg with the Clippers in 1987-88), Woodson's specialty was always point-prevention. In fact, he was the primary architect of the Pistons' championship-caliber defensive strategies. The specifics were ball-pressure, wing-denial, pushing mobile high-scorers (like Kobe Bryant) into help spots, collapsing on ball-penetration, forcing sideline/baseline, full-court zone presses, and zoning the baseline so that Ben Wallace was free to attack layups and short jumpers. (It should also be noted that Woodson's defensive mind-set was significantly conditioned by the three seasons he played at Indiana U. under Bobby Knight.) But which of the Atlanta Hawks has any history of, or proclivity for, playing defense? Not Kenny Anderson, Jon Barry, Tony Delk, Predrag Drobnjak, Al Harrington, Kevin Willis, Jason Collier, and definitely not Antoine Walker. Sure, these guys can fill the basket, and they should thrive in the offensives that Woodson has designed and installed: From Knight, Woodson inherits a tradition of motion keyed by precise picks. From Brown, Woodson has been steeped in the advantages of down-picks, high screen/rolls, single/double loops, weaves, rips, zippers, and pinch-post actions. Isos are employed to take advantage of mismatches, and the Hawks will also run whenever possible. Last season, the Hawks won only 28 games, and unless this season's crew experiences a miraculous transformation, they'll be hard-pressed to improve. The buzz around the league is that Woodson has the goods to eventually become an outstanding coach. Hopefully, his reputation will survive a long season of adversity.

He wanted to have the opportunity to play more minutes and the only way he was going to get that chance was to be traded. When the Hawks acquired Harrington from the Pacers, they got a player who has a chip on his shoulder and wants to prove to the rest of the NBA that he can be one of the top forwards in the league. Originally selected out of St. Patrick's High School by Indiana in the first round (25th pick overall) of the 1998 NBA Draft, Harrington played a career- high 30.9 minutes per game for the Pacers last season. He appeared in 79 contests in 2003-04 and averaged 13.3 points and 6.4 rebounds, which were both career-highs. In Atlanta, Harrington will start and will have every chance in the world to showcase his talents for the re-building Hawks. My love for the Hawks wants me to say they won the deal, but I have to be honest, Dallas was the obvious victor. They were able to get a quality player who can immediately step in and replace Steve Nash in Jason Terry. I think J.T. will flourish in Dallas. Other ball handlers like Marquis Daniels and Michael Finley will surround him, which is exactly what he needs. On the Hawks side, this wasn’t a terrible trade, but I believe they could have done better. Antoine Walker is a very talented player, but he has a bad attitude. It won’t take long for him to get sick and tired of losing and start complaining about the team. I would be shocked if ‘Toine lasted more than a season in Hotlanta. Al Harrington to the Atlanta Hawks—Stephen Jackson to the Indiana Pacers: This was a win-win trade for both teams. The Hawks knew they weren’t going to keep Jackson, so they were able to net a great a return in Al Harrington. Al is a promising forward who will get the chance to shine in the ATL. I wouldn’t be surprised if he averages 20ppg&10rpg this year. On the Pacers side, they got some much needed help on the perimeter in Stephen Jackson. They needed to bring someone in who could eventually replace Reggie Miller in the line-up. Jax could definitely be that guy. He has the playoff experience and proved in Atlanta he is capable of being a go-to guy on offense. ------------------------------------------------------------ Hawks' Crawford to miss season with knee injury (10-16-04). http://www.accessnorthga.com/news/ap_newfu...ry.asp?ID=47826

Despite 38.1 percent shooting from the field against the Wolves the Hawks were still within an off-balance three-point attempt by Antoine Walker to tie. Unfortunately, he missed long-range prayer and the Hawks lost, 96-99. They also lost Chris Crawford, who scored nine points in the second quarter before injuring his right knee late in the third period when Kevin Garnett fell on him. Now, after a trade that sent Harrington to Atlanta in exchange for Stephen Jackson, the Hawks get to reap the rewards of the Pacers' tutelage. In Atlanta, Harrington gets the opportunity to start regularly for the first time in his career. He started 15 games for the Pacers last season, averaging 14.6 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.3 steals. But those numbers should improve greatly in Atlanta, where the talent arguably isn't as good as that of the Pacers' bench. Harrington and Antoine Walker will be leaned on to provide the bulk of the scoring. With a surrounding starting cast that could include Kenny Anderson, Boris Diaw, and Predrag Drobnjak, it's easy to envision 18 to 20 points a night from Harrington. And as long as he keeps shooting at his career average clip of .451, there'll be no complaints from fantasy owners. ------------------------------------------------------------ THE DAILY (10-11-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9938.shtml Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks held a free open practice and full-court scrimmage last night and GM Billy Knight's vision of filling the seats seems, slowly but surely, to be taking shape. At some point the offseason has to end and the Hawks have nothing left to do but open the doors and hope people come. Last night, they did.

One of only two players to return from the beginning of last year (2003 first round pick Boris Diaw being the other), Crawford is now the longest tenured Hawk by an incredible margin of six full seasons. Yet he has not been marked on the roster as the captain of the team. What gives? ------------------------------------------------------------ The Kings PreSeason Report (10-8-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9908.shtml SOUTHEAST DIVISION: Can the Atlanta Hawks get much worse. This team has suffered through more than its share of turmoil, without much empathy from anyone in or out of the city. It looks like they will still be struggling this season as well. Who is going to lead the team on the floor? Who is going to score? The Hawks don’t appear to have much strength off the boards either, in rebounds or blocking, their best player on defense looks to be Antoine Walker and he’s more known for his offense. Speaking of offense, Walker again looks to be their strongest player; he will be carrying a big burden on his shoulders. A match up against Sacramento should prove to be two wins for the Kings. Walker and Al Harrington will have to play tops and Atlanta will need some help from their bench, even then I would expect the Kings to still get both. ------------------------------------------------------------ Atlanta Hawks Host Free Public Practice & Scrimmage. http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/free_practice_101004.html

Not that the movie series about a bunch of rough-hewn kids and an old codger was any "Lethal Weapon" franchise by any stretch of the imagination, but to look at the 2004-05 edition of the Atlanta Hawks, one could perceive a 21st century rendition of the motley crew. And while this really might come across as a knock, remember, just as in the "Bad News Bears" and the hockey version, "The Mighty Ducks," the kids learn how to win, despite adversity. The same could happen in Atlanta. After nine seasons in Atlanta, which made him the 11th overall pick of the 1984 NBA Draft (yeah, I know, some of you weren't even an itch in daddy's pants then), Willis was signed nine days ago to wrap up a stellar career where he started it. General manager Billy Knight and head coach Mike Woodson are hoping Willis' presence will bring experience, steadiness and maturity to help the team's newest Hawks learn to fly, fly right and hopefully, still be flying at the sip old age of 42. Not to mention that his 42-year-old physique still looks as cut as it did when he was 20 and may be the Hawks' only fighting chance against Shaquille O'Neal. ------------------------------------------------------------ THE LINKS (9-30-04). http://slamonline.com/links/09272004/index1.html Continuing our trip down South, we check in today in the ATL with Myung the Hawks Fan, who breaks down the '04-05 Atlanta Hawks, my Atlanta Hawks. Jump on board, the bandwagon feels fine!! WHAT'S YOUR NAME AND WHERE DO YOU LIVE?: Myung (John) Lee. Tucker, GA (just north of Atlanta). YOUR TEAM IS: The Atlanta Hawks WHY IS THIS YOUR FAVORITE TEAM?: After coming from Korea when I was less than a year old, I've grown up in Atlanta ever since. I became a basketball fan in the mid-'80s, and I was hooked, thanks mostly to Michael Jordan's "Come Fly With Me" video tape, Kurtis Blow's song "Basketball" and Fleer basketball cards. At some point in the middle of the decade, I began to realize we had a very hot team in town, a team that happened to rock a uniform which featured a logo which looked strangely similar to that dot-chomping yellow ball of fun, Pac man, an '80s icon if ever there was one. Yes, that team would be the Atlanta Hawks. Players named Dominique, Cliff, Randy, Antoine, Spud and Tree helped make the Omni a haven for high-quality basketball, and every night you tuned in, you'd be treated a highlight film of the human variety. There was one point when we, the Hawks community, thought cats named Moses and Reggie would finally push us over the hump, conveniently ignoring the subtle fact that they were way past their primes. It wasn't meant to be, and our decade of mediocrity began (the '90s). Mookie, Smitty, Deke and (gasp!) Laettner teased us in the mid 90's. Since then? It's been nightmare season after nightmare season. I've lived through 1st round draft picks (most of them lottery picks) named Roy Marble, Rumeal Robinson, Jon Contract, Dallas Comegys, Adam Keefe, Doug Edwards, Priest Lauderdale, Ed Gray, and Cal Bowdler. Wait. I almost forgot the question. Oh yes, why is this my favorite team? I thought I was answering the "What frustrates you as a Hawks fan" question, but apparently, I misread it. OK, this is why the Hawks are my favorite team: Because I'm an Atlantan through and through, and gosh darnit, just as sure as there's a Waffle House on every street corner in Hot-lanta, we WILL raise a championship banner in Philips Arena before I die. If you don't agree, you'll have to take it up with me. And Lang. And the other eight Hawks fans in the world. WHO IS RETURNING FROM LAST YEAR?: Does Harry the Hawk (our mascot) count? I think the Hawks were trying to compete with the Charlotte Bobcats to see who could have the most unrecognizable roster entering the season. Then again, only one of those two teams is an actual expansion team. We managed to keep Chris Crawford, Boris Diaw and Jason Collier from last season. If you want to put a little more perspective into it, if you travel back in time about 15 months (right before the 2003 draft), Chris Crawford is the only current Hawk who was on the team at the time. Yep, one current Hawk has been here for longer than a full season. WHO SKIPPED TOWN?: Jason Terry and Alan Henderson got traded to the Mavs. Stephen "Whoo" Jackson got traded to the Pacers. Bob Sura, Jacque Vaughn and Travis Hansen signed with other teams. I honestly can't say I know what happened to Mamadou N'diaye, Joel Przybilla, Wesley Person, Zeljko Rebraca, Michael Bradley, Hiram Fuller and Josh Davis. Even hard core Hawks fans can't keep up with all the scrubs. I hope I didn't just offend all the Mamadou N'diaye fans out there. WHO HAS YOUR TEAM ADDED?: I hear our team just added a nice new kitchen sink. The new Hawks are "Mr. Chibbs" Kenny Anderson, Jon Barry, Kevin Willis, Tony Delk, Predrag Drobnjak, Al Harrington and Antoine Walker. Our draft picks were Josh Childress, Josh Smith, Royal Ivey and Donta Smith. Apparently, the front office's top priorities this summer were to sign (or re-sign) former Georgia Tech players, guys named Josh, guys who previously played on the Hawks during the Pac-man uniform era, and guys who had to have played with all three of these teams: the Kentucky Wildcats; the Boston Celtics; the Dallas Mavericks. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR TEAM'S COACH?: Mike Woodson was added back in early July. The fact that he was one of Larry Brown's top assistants on the Pistons championship team (and NOT of the Bronze Team) speaks volumes about him -- he learned from the best. He's a young guy, and I believe he already has a good rapport with our new players. It's far too early for me to make any sort of judgment on coach Woodson, but I certainly wasn't disappointed with the hire (especially since names like Del Harris and John McLeod were being tossed around as other "top" candidates). I wasn't overwhelmed with the Woodson hire, but I certainly wasn't underwhelmed either. I believe it's fair to say that me and the other nine Hawks fans were...whelmed. WHICH PLAYER IS THE KEY TO YOUR TEAM'S SUCCESS THIS SEASON?: Antoine Walker. He is going to be a free agent in 2005, and I know he wants to prove to Dallas (and indirectly, Boston) that they erred in letting him go. He's one of the only veterans on our squad, and with so many young and impressionable (digression: is the word "impressionable" ever used apart from the word "young?") players, we need him to really set the tone. Do I envision him in a Hawks uniform past 2005? Not really. He'll either sign elsewhere or will be traded at the All Star break. He is going to be a valuable commodity as a player/leader AND as trade bait/salary cap space maker. WHAT TEAM DO YOU MOST WANT TO BEAT?: We don't really have a rival. Sadly, we're so bad lately that we've never been able to establish a good rivalry with anyone. Geographically, we're close to Memphis, Charlotte and Orlando, yet I don't see any of those teams as a rival. I guess it goes unsaid that it's always nice to beat the Lakers. Then again, every team wants to beat the Lakers, even it's a sorry Shaq-less, Glove-less, Zen Master-less version of the squad. Pardon my bluntness, but I'd honestly like to see us beat NOBODY and lock up the top pick in the 2005 draft and just head into the 2005-06 season as the hands down favorite to knock off the San Antonio Spurs from their championship throne. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly. Both parts of it. WHAT TEAM DO YOU MOST NEED TO BEAT? If I were a Spurs fan, I'd say, the Pistons. If you root for an upper echelon team, it's easy to find a "team you need to beat." If you root for a bottom dweller, this question is frustratingly hard to answer. I guess my answer here is similar to the question that preceded this one. If nothing else, since we're in the new Southeast division, I'd like to see us hold our own against the other teams (Washington, Miami, Orlando and Charlotte), just to show them we won't be pushed around. But again, I'd like to see us tank the season. Hey, I'm a true fan, and I've been suffering long enough and I don't want to see us mess up Billy Knight's master plan. What's one more year of suffering in light of the bigger picture? We're one year away from really making a splash in the League. But for this upcoming season, I don't think we need to beat anyone. Let's go 0-82 for all I care. WHO IS THE MOST IMPORTANT NEW PLAYER ON YOUR TEAM? Al Harrington. He is the franchise. I think the "Whoo" for Al trade will go down in Pacers lore as the opposite of the one that netted them Jermaine O'Neal for Dale Davis. In this case, the Pacers got stripped in the open court, and the Hawks just threw down a wide-open dunk. Stephen Jackson is still young, is capable of playing decent basketball 3 out of every 5 games, and fills a need for the Pacers. Then again, I firmly believe that the 2003 version of Stephen Jackson was the best we'll ever see. On the Spurs, he was a role player. On the Hawks, he was a good player on a bad team. He's not in the same ball park as Al Harrington. Big Al's going to blow up this year. Ever since his days at St. Patrick's HS in New York, his game had "superstar" written all over it. He's been DJ Shockley-ing it (an obscure reference that only UGA football fans might understand) the past few years on the Indiana bench (starting only occasionally), but this year is his year. It's finally Al Harrington's time. While Employee Number 8 won't be holding it down in A-Town for much longer, Al is here to stay. He's our foundation. I just hope he grows his hair out because his skin rows are Battier-esque. Pippen-esque, if you will. YOUR GENERAL MANAGER -- DISCUSS: Billy Knight couldn't be a worse general than Pete Babcock if he tried, and I mean it. Pete Babcock, bless his heart, was the worst GM in all of the NBA. The only fans in the NBA who might be able to relate even slightly are Knick fans, but our heartache has gone on for over a decade. Knight unloaded Alan Henderson's un-tradeable salary. He revamped our entire starting line up from a year ago, and I couldn't be happier. If he wrestled in the WWE, his name would be the "Housecleaner." We had quite a few "rebuilding" periods under Pete Babcock. I believe under Knight, we'll only need one, and we're currently in year two of it. In my eyes, Billy Knight should be handed GM of the Year award today. Seriously. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR TEAM NEED TO IMPROVE?: We need a bona fide center. Peja and Collier are going to get manhandled by other big men. We also need a top notch point guard. Boris Diaw has point guard instincts, and Tony Delk and Kenny Anderson are really solid...for back-up point guards. I know that one of these three guys will be the starter at point, and that is not a reason for optimism. We also need to season our younger players, like Diaw and the two Josh's. In the bigger picture, we need to improve our image. Philips Arena is the laughingstock of the league in terms of attendance. Other teams don't take the Hawks seriously. In this great sports city, we are never mentioned in the same breath as the Falcons, Braves, and recently, even the Thrashers. Hope is on the horizon. We've got new ownership. We've got a new coach. We've got a new roster. While we're not there yet, we've come a long way in just a year. We're on our way. Mark my words. WHERE DO YOU HOPE YOUR TEAM CAN FINISH THIS SEASON?: Like I wrote previously, I want us to do as poorly as possible. I want us to do well in the long run, and in order to do that, we can't have success this season. I know that makes me sound like the "anti-fan" but seriously, I can take one more year of losing basketball if it's going to translate into long term success. OK, NOW REALLY, WHERE WILL THEY ACTUALLY FINISH THIS SEASON?: This is probably the opposite of many fans out there; most want their teams to do well, but in reality, their teams won't meet those expectations. As a Hawks fan, I think the reality will be that our team will actually do better than their true fans want them to. I believe we'll have a better record than those Preseason magazines predict. I believe that veterans like Kenny Anderson, Jon Barry, Tony Delk, and Antoine Walker will contribute enough and help aid our younger players (Al Harrington, Boris Diaw, and the two Josh's) to the point where we'll compete hard every night and win more games than we really should. We might even squeak into the Playoffs (linkstigators all over the world are falling out of their chairs right now), considering how bad our new division is. Only Miami is a lock for the Playoffs right now. Orlando lost T-Mac and is entering the Steve Francis era while trying to placate a young #1 draft pick straight out of high school. Antawn Jamison and Gilbert Arenas are having a nice Golden State reunion in the nation's capital, but so far, they've won very few games in the L. Charlotte is going to, for lack of a better word, suck. We could potentially be the second best team in the division. That's scary. For Hawks fans and non-Hawks alike, that's scary. ------------------------------------------------------------ Individual Tickets For Regular Season On Sale Now. http://www.nba.com/hawks/tickets/Individua...ets_100104.html

They watched, waited, and anticipated that general manager Billy Knight would somehow pull off a trade to move up in the draft to nab Howard from the Orlando Magic or Los Angeles Clippers at the time. The move never happened, for two reasons: (1) no one dared wake Knight from his pillow-soaking, drool-laden slumber on the office divan, and, (2) the Hawks only had four guys remaining on their roster, and, other than Jason Terry, would have had better success peddling kiddie porn to the FBI.
