But seriously, Antoine Walker and Al Harrington could help this team make real noise in the East. But because they're the Hawks, we simply cannot give them the benefit of the doubt right now.

K-Will is one of the coolest guys in the League, and it's good to see him come back home to Atlanta. He's even getting number 42, which had been assigned to rookie Josh Smith. Sorry, J.

  5. Hawks News: September 20, 2004 NBA East Roundup (9-20-04). http://www.insidehoops.com/roundup-east-092004.shtml Atlanta Hawks: Current Guaranteed Contracts - 12 Needs: Some fans, leadership from Antoine Walker, Al Harrington to emerge, and rookie promise. Most Likely Moves: Request a transfer to the NBDL. Thoughts: This is a sorry roster. Al Harrington is a nice player that teams have been after for years. After that, look for Antoine to step up in a contract year and everyone else to run around in circles. ------------------------------------------------------------ Heading east in the reconfigured Association (9-20-04). http://www.thespectrum.com/news/stories/20...ts/1269154.html Atlanta Hawks -- The Hawks have done a complete overhaul of their roster this summer. Their starting backcourt of Jason Terry and Stephen Jackson is gone, both players having been traded. But Atlanta has brought two former Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets back to replace them, signing point guard Kenny Anderson and off-guard Jon Barry on Thursday. So far Anderson is the only true point guard on the Hawks' roster, and they may be relying on his experience to steady their floor attack. Barry will compete for minutes with Tony Delk, recently acquired via trade with the Dallas Mavericks along with forward Antoine Walker. Walker will join with re-signed center Jason Collier and forward Al Harrington, coming to Atlanta via a trade with the Indiana Pacers, to form a much-improved frontcourt for the Hawks. Chris Crawford was solid out of the forward spot for the Hawks last season, but Atlanta may look to rookie forwards Josh Childress and Josh Smith off the bench to back up the frontcourt starters. ------------------------------------------------------------ THE DAILY (9-20-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9694.shtml Atlanta Hawks: The Hawks' web site gives fans a chance to grade the offseason. About half of the nearly 7,000 respondents put Atlanta on the honor roll and about half gave it less than stellar marks. The truth is that had they gotten Erick Dampier, this summer would have been an easy A-. ------------------------------------------------------------ Sixers Sign Josh Davis (9-20-04). http://www.nba.com/sixers/news/davis_040920.html He later signed a 10-day contract with Atlanta, where he appeared in four games, with one start, and averaged 1.3 points, 1.3 rebounds and 5.8 minutes per game.
  6. Hawks News (September 17, 2004) THE DAILY (9-17-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9669.shtml Atlanta Hawks: All wasps will defend their nests, but Yellow Jackets are some of the most aggressive. Even the oldest ones are hard to swat away, like Kenny Anderson and Jon Barry, two Yellow Jackets who flew home yesterday in Atlanta. "I get my backcourt mate back from 13 years ago," Barry said about Anderson. "I'm surprised to be standing erect at this time. Thirteen years is a long time." ------------------------------------------------------------ N.B.A. Cancels Game in Russia, Citing Terrorism Risk (9-17-04). http://www.nytimes.com/2004/09/18/internat...ope/18jazz.html The National Basketball Association announced yesterday that it had canceled an Oct. 8 exhibition game in Russia featuring the Utah Jazz against the Moscow club CSKA because the recent terrorist attacks in the country presented a security threat to the game. The Atlanta Hawks were the last N.B.A. team to play in Russia, in 1988 against the Soviet national team.

Former Georgia Tech teammates Kenny Anderson and Jon Barry will be introduced today at 1pm. It is expected both signed for the veteran minimum. ------------------------------------------------------------ THE LINKS (9-16-04). http://slamonline.com/links/09132004/ The Hawks have inked my main main Mr. Chibbs and Jon Barry. When the Portland Trail Blazers signed Darius Miles last week to a six-year, $48 million deal, it meant the end of Shareef Abdur-Rahim, who was once considered a potential star. The Blazers are going to build around Zach Randolph, and the last thing they want is an unhappy power forward behind him. Abdur-Rahim has only one year left on his contract, but it's for $14.6 million. It sure sounds like he's headed for the New York Knicks, who are desperate to put together a team that can contend immediately. ------------------------------------------------------------ 2004 Dance Team Auditions Set For Sept. 12. http://www.nba.com/hawks/danceteam/2004_Da..._Auditions.html

Maybe people like Olden Polynice thought it was an 'O' (after all, he did have the difference between a "black hole" and a "black ho" explained to him in the movie "Eddie"). Maybe it's Robert Archibald's stat line, and he has a friend somewhere who's paying tribute. Others have chosen it because it has a significance to it. Drew Gooden, for example, likes it because it reminds him he "came from nothing," according to him. But 00? It certainly doesn't mean that someone amounts to zero squared ... unless your name is Kevin Duckworth. No worries, Duckworth is retired, hidden away in his Beaverton, Oregon home, likely frequenting the Taco Bell on Cedar Hills Boulevard or something similar, bloating those 00s. Not Tony Delk. He's entering his ninth season of basketball and ready to push any and all numbers above zero into the Atlanta Hawks' stat books and wins column. ------------------------------------------------------------ 2003-04 Honor Roll: Josh Childress (9-1-04). http://stanford.theinsiders.com/2/289544.html ------------------------------------------------------------ Hawks Announce 2004-05 Television Lineup (8-31-04). http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/Hawks_TV_Sched_083104.html

  13. Hawks News (8-26-04) THE DAILY (8-26-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9465.shtml Atlanta Hawks: His pappy played at the same college he did. Even wears No. 40 in his honor. He honed his athleticism in high school as a competitive swimmer. And his favorite movie is The Green Mile. Hopefully, he hopes to sculpt his physique to that of Michael Clarke Duncan ... with the load he's going to have to carry as a newly re-signed big man for the Atlanta Hawks, the shoulders of Jason Jeffery Collier are going to have to be mighty broad. ------------------------------------------------------------ Pre-teen is an ace on the court - even overseas (8-26-04). http://www.zwire.com/site/news.cfm?newsid=..._id=12721&rfi=6 A past participant of the program, Atlanta Hawks basketball player Al Harrington, came back to give an inspirational talk to the young athletes. The rep? Hey, he was the No. 6 pick of the draft, ahead of College Player of the Year Jameer Nelson by 13 selections. The 'do ... his tight afro shows what the cultural hair-do would look like if Ben Wallace knew that a pick was something other than freeing up Rasheed Wallace for a three. And that winning smile? Well, it's there now, but how long will it last as the Hawks learn to fly? Joshua Malik Childress, possibly a next-generation Scottie Pippen, has the opportunity to make a ground-floor impact in his rookie season with the Atlanta Hawks. Question is, will Antoine Walker ever give up the rock on offense or will Childress have to fight for the regurgitated snacks baby Hawks usually have to scrap for? ------------------------------------------------------------ 'Human Highlight' sees lack of U.S. effort (8-24-04). http://www.timesrecordnews.com/trn/sp_olympics/article/0,1891,TRN_5723_3133457,00.html

  17. Quote: Seriously, though....Is there any...I repeat...ANY Serviceable Big man still out there that we could use?? Keon Clark and Karl Malone are still reportedly available although I'm sure the chances of seeing Malone wearing a Hawks uniform are slim to none at best. Kevin Willis is also still out there. Oliver Miller, another unrestriced free agent, played fairly well in limited time last season with the Timberwolves.
  18. Makes you think that maby the NBA game is not the best brand of basketball being played. I would rather watch the foreign style over the NBA style anytime. It is just a more pure brand of basketball being played the way the sport is suppose to be played in my opinion. Puts the team concept and the emphasis on fundamentals back into the sport, two things that the NBA has been noticeably lacking in recent memory.
  19. Hawks News (8-21-04) Hawks in the Olympics David Anderson (F) (Australia) 7 points (3-5 F.G.), (1-2 F.T.) 7 rebounds (3 offensive) 2 tournovers, 5 P.F. 20. Hawks News (8-20-04) THE DAILY (8-20-04). http://www.hoopsworld.com/article_9407.shtml Atlanta Hawks: John Smoltz ... Michael Vick ... Jeff Gordon ... Predrag Drobnjak? Each of the major sports have a high-profile name associated with their sport in the Atlanta area, yet the Hawks have gone another off-season without so much as a bat of an eyelash when it comes to bringing a more marketable name to Phillips Arena's outdoor marquee. Some would say, "what about Antoine Walker?" What about him? More people would likely line up to watch Dominique Wilkins re-join the team before they'd get excited about Walker or anyone else on the 2004-05 Hawks. I mean, if they wanted a big-name player that would hog the ball, they truly should have gone after Kobe Bryant. At least his name recognition is strong enough to both hang with the Vicks and Smoltzes of the world, as well as draw a few more people in to the empty seats at Phillips. And, he certainly will ... on February 7th. ------------------------------------------------------------ The Amico Report (8-20-04). http://www.insidehoops.com/amico-082004.shtml A neat fact to close this week's edition: Did you know Julius “Doctor J” Erving and Pete Maravich played two games as teammates with the Atlanta Hawks? I didn’t until I read a story in the most recent edition of Basketball Digest. It happened during the preseason of 1972-73, after Erving’s rookie season in the old American Basketball Association with the Virginia Squires. He signed with the Hawks -- even though he was selected in the NBA draft by Milwaukee. Imagine if something like that happened today. There would be lawyers everywhere and ESPN would make it out to be more important than the fall of Communism. Anyway, Erving joined Maravich, who was drafted by the Hawks, for two exhibition games against ABA teams. On Sept. 23, 1972, he scored 28 points and grabbed 18 rebounds in a 112-99 win over the Kentucky Colonels. A week later, he shot an amazing 14-of-15 from the field in a 120-106 win over the Carolina Cougars. But before the regular season started, a three-judge panel ruled that Erving was contractually bound to the Squires, and he returned to the ABA. But not before taking on Pistol Pete in a few games of one-on-one. And wouldn’t that have been just awesome to see? “It was really one of the joys of my life to play with Pete,” Erving told Basketball Digest. “We would play for dinner after practice. … I pretty much learned that from Pete. If this guy is going to be your teammate, you need to stay after practice and get to understand his game.” Ah, the good ol’ days. ------------------------------------------------------------ Denver's bench remains in limbo (8-20-04). http://www.denverpost.com/Stories/0,1413,36%7E90%7E2346367,00.html "I think the likely scenario is Jon and Rodney will be back at the moment," Vandeweghe said Thursday. Reached by phone, Barry sounded similarly optimistic. "I'd like to get something worked out with them," Barry said. "That'd be nice. ... Hopefully we'll get something done next week." The guard said he also remains in contact with the Atlanta Hawks and Los Angeles Clippers. Vandeweghe also couched his words by saying nothing is certain on either Barry or White. "We're looking at some different scenarios at the moment," he said. "You never can tell." ------------------------------------------------------------ No Dampier, Now What? According to reports from the Associated Press, the Golden State Warriors and Dallas Mavericks are close to completing a five-player trade that would bring forwards Eduardo Najera and Christian Laettner to Golden State and send centers Erick Dampier, Evan Eschmeyer and guard Dan Dickau to Dallas. It nags us and spoils our fun. It deprives us of the fullest realization of our ambitions and hopes. It's also costing Erick Dampier what little reputation he had. They say that absence makes the heart grow fonder ... but absence also makes the heart wander. People give up. Owners, general manager, even star players, give up when they're made to wait at the bottom of the stairs so long that they miss the big dance. Who the hell does Dampier think he is? Just because he has had a shining glimpse of a moment or two guarding Shaquille O'Neal doesn't mean he's in the same realm. Hell, the sun shines on a dog's ass every now and then. Brad Miller looks like Shaq compared to Dampier. Let's give him the benefit of the doubt and suppose he exaggerated mildly, for dramatic purpose. Would such a frontcourt at least be the best in the Southeast division, where everybody but Walker appears to be cowering in Shaq's shadow? ------------------------------------------------------------ Curry on Griz radar (8-13-04). http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/grizzlies/article/0,1426,MCA_475_3106838,00.html Although no deal is apparently imminent, the Grizzlies' crusade for a center comes down to three options with seven weeks left until training camp begins. The No. 1 goal still is for the Grizzlies to acquire veteran big man Erick Dampier via a sign-and-trade with Golden State. The second option is working out a deal with the Chicago Bulls to land young center Eddy Curry. There does exist a gentle divide within the Grizzlies front office. Dampier appears to be the top pick with Griz president Jerry West. Landing Curry would satisfy the coaching staff and executives in place before West arrived. Dampier's options continue to dwindle, making it more likely that he may sign a six-year, reportedly $50 million deal with Atlanta. The Grizzlies remain hopeful that a sign-and-trade deal can be worked out with Golden State as long as Dampier treads in free-agent waters. Golden State has yet to indicate it is willing to help Dampier with a sign-and-trade.
