Excellent ESPN recap on Woody's use of zone in the 3rd quarter:
I like how excited we get when Woody uses a *gasp* zone defense. This guy is a professional basketball coach. He's supposed to make adjustments. The fact that it took the team going down 3 to 2 against a young and injured Milwaukee team for him to decide to change things up a little just proves what a buffoon he is. You can say its the players, and I'm sure it is partially, but I don't see how anyone can say that Woody is helping matters at all.

There is no way in hell Woodson should be back next year.

You know what man, I'm not too sure about that. If we keep Joe for the next two or three years we'll have: Improved Josh, Improved Horf, Teague hopefully starting and giving us improved PG play, A regressing but less selfish Joe (no pressure to perform for a contract anymore), and Jamal.
Cleveland will lose Shaq and Ilgauskus to age (possibly Lebron to Free Agency). Boston is done, Magic will get worse as Vince and Rashard continue to age and decline in play... If we prove we are good enough right now to challenge Cleveland or/and Orlando then I think we seriously need to sign Joe. And not just to be good, but to possibly make it to the finals.
I mean, what I'm getting at is that if we keep Joe, our chances of improving are pretty high. You gotta figure Josh and Horf will continue to improve as they have been doing every year (they are only 23-24 years old!), you know Teague will only get better and you know Marvin can't get worse. Jamal continuing his play is not a given, but I honestly believe he has finally found a role he loves and it is really pushing his game. I think he can have, maybe not years AS good, but pretty similar years to this year.
The elite teams right now are all pretty old at some very important positions, Spurs, Suns, Lakers, Boston, Orlando, Dallas, Cleveland... I doubt any of these teams improves with age. There are some up and coming teams out there for sure (Ok City, Healthy Portland, Millwaukee) But I like my chances against any of those guys.
You might be right about him being less selfish with the new contract. I hadn't thought about that. If that actually happened, the Hawks could improve. I'm not saying we shouldn't resign him, because I think the chances are pretty slim that the Hawks would luck into someone else that would make the team better.
The problem is that even if he plays less selfishly, this team will never run a real offense under Woodson, and Crawford will just end up taking Joe's bad shots.

LOL @ Joe doesn't play center.
He plays shooting guard. And not nearly as well as some people think. He plays at the level of someone who deserves a max deal maybe once every 10 games.
-
please read: I didn't mention passing on Joe, I said he's not worth a max contract. and he's not thanks :)
This. There will be no championship with Joe Johnson unless we get really lucky in the draft or someone just gives us someone in a trade.
And people can quote statistics all they want, but if you actually watch Joe Johnson and then go watch players like Wade, it's easy to see how they aren't comparable. Jo vs. Crawford is a much better comparison, and Crawford won't make anywhere near max money.
-
If Joe Johnson was half as good as some of the people on this board think he is, the team wouldn't have routinely been beaten by 20-something in the Orlando games.

The playoffs will dictate whether Joe Johnson is worth the Max or not. It doesn't even matter IMHO if we get out of the second round, as long as we are competitive and Joe shows that he can be the type of guy that can carry us when we need it. Last year JJ was AWFUL in the playoffs, I don't care what anyone says. His per was in the 12-13 range which is horrible. If Joe can step up his game, or at least play some of his better basketball in the playoffs this year, then he will prove that he is worth keeping. We have a team with players in Josh and Horf who are improving. Teague is a player, no question about it, all he needs is experience and confidence and he will be one of the better guards in the league. If Joe shows that he can be the Joe of the regular season in the playoffs than it will be very clear to me that resigning him is must. If he falters in the playoffs once more than you really have to question signing a 29 year old second tier star who can't deliver in the playoffs to the max.
I think it just depends on what the team's goals are. If they just want to be competitive every year, then they might as well resign Joe. If they actually want to try and win a title, it's not happening with Joe Johnson. It probably won't happen without him either, but stranger stuff has happened.

Josh is better than JJ.
-
I'd much rather Jamal have the ball at the end of the game than JJ. I mean, remember that god awful layup Joe shot near the end of the game before Jamal missed the three. That was embarrassing to watch.

Stupid League Pass, they blackout the Memphis games where I'm from.
-
I don't know about that. I think the Hawks could easily take the Celtics in a 7-game series. Maybe even the Cavs. I think beating the Magic is completely out of the question, though.

Oden is done. It's a shame too because I was looking forward to watching that Blazers team for years to come.
-
Maddux was way better than Chipper.

we are supposed to EXPECT AND ACCEPT
What is the actual difference between accepting and not accepting a loss by your favorite pro sports team? Is it the difference in making an irate message board-post or not? This seems a little ridiculous to me.
-
I think the Hawks are better than both Boston and Cleveland. Orlando is a pretty horrible matchup, though. I don't think we have any shot at beating them.
-
Teague will be better than Acie if for no other reason than athleticism.
-
It's probably the same type of deal as Childress has. The team pays all the taxes so the money they make is all theirs.
-
I can't imagine he'll make much money in China. China is a communist country and I bet they have insanely high tax rates.
I think you'd probably be surprised how similar the tax rates are between the US and China.

Pretty funny given what happened tonight. Especially funny because they misspelled "distinguished."
-
I didn't watch the game tonight so I'll add that to my comment.
Then keep your uniformed comments to yourself. This wasn't a knock on the team at all, and I haven't been whining about much of anything all season. I'm pretty happy how stuff has gone. If you had seen Collins tonight, you'd have been amazed he was in the NBA too.
Do we give Woodson credit for this win?

You really think he deserves credit for nearly losing to Milwaukee in 6 games. "Haha," indeed.
