  1. Was high on him for the first few months of last season. He and Jordan Hill were the only things worth watching on that Lakers squad. Didn't have a great season overall, but the Lakers were atrocious. I'm not sure how much I can blame him for his season.

I'd be glad to have him aboard as like a 7th or 8th man. I'm still not 100% sold on Thabo as a starter but I don't thing Johnson (or probably anybody else still available at this point) will be a better option for that role.

  2. And we're playing by far the weakest team left in the playoffs. With the way we lost Game 1, there is no way in hell we should be 1 - 1 right now.

I see what you're saying. But if we were playing Memphis, Chicago, or the Clippers in this round, we would be down 0 - 2 and looking at playoff DEATH.

Hopefully having 3.5 days off before we play again, will get them back on the right track.

I apologize if this has already been said elsewhere but...

The Game 1 loss was a statistical anomaly. The Hawks had 53 (53!!!!) uncontested field goal attempts, and they made only 15 of them. That's 28%. TWENTY. EIGHT. Not only is that unfathomably bad by Hawks standards, that's bad by any team's standards.

A one game sample means absolutely nothing in sports. It certainly means nothing in basketball, which is why we play seven-game series. If the Hawks continue to get something in the neighborhood of 53 uncontested shots per game, they're going to beat the brakes off of teams.

Blame it on nerves. Blame it on fatigue. Blame it on the Illuminati tightening up the rims. Doesn't matter what you blame it on, just understand that such a performance will likely never happen again.

  3. I was at this game. First time at Barclays Center, hooray for me!

Defense was obviously lacking, not just in principles but also in effort. My friend and I joked that with the guys knowing they'd be in NYC for several nights in a row playing against a clearly inferior team, they may have gone too hard Friday night. Everyone looked sluggish. Even during TV timeouts our guys seemed worn out the whole game.

Shooting under 40% just isn't going to fly in the playoffs but MAN did we get unlucky. Layups repeatedly rimming out, jumpers going half way down and rattling out. And not to mention some of the swallowed whistles in the second half. We were still in the game until the final 90 seconds. That's amazing.

The most worrisome thing for me are the injuries to Al and Paul. If it didn't come across in his play, Paul was visibly favoring his shoulder throughout the game. We can't assume DMC is going to score 20 every game, we need Paul to be close to 100% or we might be cooked. I didn't notice Al acting any differently regarding his hand, but he's missing almost every shot that would normally be a gimme for him. Sometimes badly. Makes me nervous.

I'm still not worried about this series. You don't need to sound the alarms after a single road loss. That said, the last three playoff games I went to (two for the Hawks, one for the Falcons) were all losses. I'm starting to get a complex.

  4. The police report is also in question as it relates to the timeline as seen on the video. It said Pero grabbed an officer while Thabo was being arrested, isn't Pero already in handcuffs? And I'm still not seeing where Thabo 'charged at an officer.'

All the facts are still not revealed but to this point the police report and video tell two different stories.

so do you believe what your eyes tell you or do you believe the police account.

The video calls into question the sequence of events as reported by the police at least on this point.

I would like to know where Thabo and Pero's first interaction with the police occurred in relation to where they were reported arrested - 100 feet from the crime scene on the opposite side of the road.

    Still so many unanswered questions.

I don't think Pero was already in handcuffs but he's already been subdued and is all but lying flat on his back on the curb.

Also, for those saying the cop hit Thabo with his baton, that's what it looked like to me as well. But a poster on reddit linked me to a YouTube video showing someone demoing a bunch of auto-extending police batons. When they extend all the way, they make the snapping sound you hear in the video. So I don't think he hit Thabo, he was just extending his baton.

That said, it still looks like an obvious overuse of force, but that's just a biased opinion from this Hawks fan who also happens to be a lawyer and who also happens to live in New York City and who also happens to think the NYPD have a bunch of reckless thugs in their midst.

As I mentioned in that other thread (http://hawksquawk.net/community/topic/404381-hawks-face-tough-stretch-rebounding-concerns-post-break), I wrote something about rebounding and analytics. I went into it with an open mind, so no accusations of confirmation bias please!

No earth-shattering findings here if you've done your research, but I hope I was able to take things apart in a somewhat novel way. As usual any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

  6. I mentioned awhile ago that I was working on my own piece on rebounding. I went into it not knowing what the data was going to show. In the end, it ended up repeating what (apparently) all the smart people analyzing basketball for a living are saying about rebounding. I won't spoil it here, take a look if you have the time and inclination.

  7. Loved the article. I really enjoyed the analysis around the reasons for overlooking him at the NBA draft combine.

In fact I seem to enjoy more stat driven articles written by fans more than anything from the major media outlets (aside from a couple articles from our boy Zach Lowe down at Grantland).

Thanks for the feedback. I'm tend to be more of a "what do the numbers say" guy rather than a "what do my eyes tell me" guy, so I hope to write more things that make similar use of numbers and the super sweet charts you can get from places like stats.nba.com or basketball-reference.com. I'm glad you liked it!

  8. If you have some time on your hands I'd love for you to take a look at this piece I put together on Mike Scott and tell me what you think. Do you think the analysis is good (spoiler alert: I like Mike Scott)? Is there anything about the format that you love or hate? Tear it apart! I'm looking to get back into writing more frequently, so any and all feedback is appreciated.

I'd post the whole thing here but, well, it's 2,000+ words.
