When you see Anderson play, you'll understand why Poythress is on a two way contract.  Poythress makes up for a lot of his low bbiq with energy/grit.  He has the body, athleticism to be an low NBA starter but what he lacks is a feel for the NBA game. It is much faster than he processes.

Attached is a highlight video of a good game from Anderson last year. Anderson is not as athletic as Poythress but all you have to watch is the first play in the video. Watch how Anderson is seeing the drive develop before it happens and positions himself to get the easy block. He has a feel for the game. Poythress is reacting to everything, even on offense. He seems surprised when he sees a shot go up and scrambles at the last second to get in position for the rebound. Not Anderson, he's positioning before the shooter ever pulls up.  That's the "feel" for the game. That's BBIQ.  Its why Bembry and Prince get steals in the passing lane.  Poythress has always gotten by on athleticism. He has to go back and learn to be a student of the game. He shows flashes but not consistency.  Here's that Anderson video.....compare him as a player.

Yeah, I'm pretty high on Anderson. I mean the Hawks have sent him to LA and all sorts of stuff for injury rehab this offseason (A friend of mine chatted him up on a flight from PHI > ATL), so it seems like they have a lot invested in him. I also noticed Anderson was out the end of last season with Philly, not sure the extent of his injuries/how long he is going to be out for.

Size wise, Anderson is a bit more muscular than Prince and seems like a natural back up to him. Needs to get healthy ASAP along with Collins and everyone else. VC can't keep playing heavy minutes, Poythress might be out now, and Bembry isn't really a SF to me at this point as Lin hasn't been a serviceable PG.

  2. I read this morning. Gives a breakdown of Trae's strengths and weaknesses. I think the defense thing is a bit overblown. GS hides Steph on defense. Portland hides Lillard. It's not the end of the world if he isn't an elite defender. I mean even Luka had some v questionable defensive plays last night (someone pull the clip of Baze dunking on him. Looks just like a clip of Trae getting dunked on in the article).

I think he may change FAs mind about coming to the Hawks.

I think it's gonna a become a spot soon. Ownership needs to (and hopefully is going to) maintain fan interest. I swear I've seen more people in Hawks gear and even non-bball fans talking about the team and the arena then I have at any point living in Atlanta, including 60 win season. Whether or not this is short lived.....? We need to become winners to hold the attention.

One thing I loved was seeing VC make it a priority to give Trae the ball to handle the offense. Old vet to the rook. Vince is going to be really good for this team with his veteran experience going forward helping our growth

Since started tearing into some of the rooks at the end of Q1. Pierce wasn't even in the huddle, it was just VC going off. His leadership has been outstanding so far.

I don't think 26 pt comeback are flukes. And if Trae wasn't relegated to the bench for a quarter bc of the bullshit fouls, he has another 22-25 pt night. So excited for this year's team, there's a lot of "right" happening.

    Sad/true.

If Lin is healthy, he needs to be cut.  If he's not healthy, he needs to sit.

My goodness he looks like somebody pulled out of the stands.

He was getting worked on up until the first time he went in. Literally left the locker room and checked in. No way he was warmed up or ready to go.

He looks slow, and can't shoot. Totally kills the offense. I like Lin but it's tough to watch.

Never a fan of losing on purpose. I want to win no matter what. Winning breeds winning. We have so much cap room going forward, it would be just as easy to get another piece through acquisition than the draft. Never root against your Hawks.

Yeah. I think we are raw enough we lose plenty this year. Plus, with as many minutes the rooks are getting, I want them out there trying to get W's. There's gonna be plenty of L's this year to out us in the lottery.

    Point well-taken.

But otoh, of our 15 full-timers, only 1 is a full-time point guard and only 5 of them are low post players... this team is way heavy at the wings.

So, since you normally see 6 low-post guys, there's a place there for a Poythress already, ie, unless you're thinking you're going to incorporate Prince as an occasional PF... and you might well be thinking that (?).

But if you think Bembry is effectively our 3rd PG (as I do), what is the value of Hamilton on the depth chart in comparison to Poythress?

PG play outside of Young has been abysmal. Lin has been bad, Bembry has the potential to get better and is bad. And outside of a TBD Trae Young, they're injury prone. So yeah, I think Poythress is good insurance but idk where he falls in terms of minutes/rotation without injuries taking place.

All that being said, I think we end up running Prince a lot of minutes at a point-forward if it came down to a shortage, and then it makes more sense. But he's gotten a lot of run during pre-season and reg, looks good, so who knows what the long term plans are with him.

What I seen from Len so far is better than anything I saw from Dedmon last year. That said, I want to see Dedmon with Young

Really? Len has looked abysmal when he isn't being fed the ball right under the hoop. Dedmon has the better shot. Also, Len on defense has not been good at all. So glad to be getting Dedmon back.

From AJC’s “A Look at Trae Young’s Historic Performance”:

    * Young is the first player in NBA history with a 35-point/10-assist game within his first 10 NBA games. Previous fewest NBA games to first 35-point/10-assist game was 11 by Charlie Scott in 1972.

    * Young joins Curry as the only rookies in NBA history to record at least 35 points, 11 assists and six three-pointers in a game (Curry reached those marks on Feb. 10, 2010 against the Clippers), according to Elias Stats Bureau).

    * Young is the first Hawks player to ever record at least 35 points, 11 assists and six 3-pointers in a game, according to Elias Stats Bureau.

I hate cherrypicking stats....but the fact that every player mentioned having a stat line like this has gone on to have some level of success is very encouraging. Watching him develop this season is going to be super exciting.

Also, pretty sure Charlie Scott already had a couple of ABA years prior to being a 'rookie'.
