Don't be fooled, the Hawks front office and rival NBA execs all know who the #1 pick is. All of the rumors are just smoke. Sarr ticks too many boxes for the Hawks to pass up on him. The smoke and rumors surrounding the Hawks have gotten so far out hand, I don't even get emotionally invested anymore.

I don't believe any of this nonsense.. lol
I highly suspect these are all smokescreens to somehow swindle the Hawks out of the #1 pick and/or Trae. These other teams look at the Hawks as a farm team or a place to dump toxic assets. The Hawks need to take the "win" they got when they were basically gifted a 7'1" kid with a 37 inch vertical that can guard 1 through 5 and who actually wants to play defense. Getting a player like Sarr was a pipedream before the Lottery. I highly doubt Landry is overthinking things as much as the rumors suggest.

How would you compare him to someone like Klay Thompson?
A skill set that was about his shooting, off ball movement and defense, but not much else in terms of ball handling and athleticism.
Pre-injury Thompson was a scorer. He didn't struggle from the FT line at all and could take over a game even without Curry. Watching Zach struggle to get separation against decent defense overseas and the FT% is a little concerning.

Risacher is my least favorite of the top prospects. I'll take Sarr, Clingan or Edey over him.
His potential is a 3/D guy. And why is he so bad at FTs? That makes me skeptical of his shooting. He also averaged like .9 assists or something. That is abhorrent. Players rarely get better at playmaking.
He's not my least favorite, but his FT% and lack of any other balls skills besides outside shooting is a problem. How can he attack the basket if he has loose handles and is a questionable FT shooter? That pretty much caps him at being a spot up shooter. Kind of reminds me of a shorter Michael Porter Jr.

An investigation was completed. It is not an ongoing investigation. What else do you want? It's like people here want him to be guilty. Players get accused of stuff all the time, everyone is looking for a pay off or an opportunity to sue. That's why they do an investigation to examine the merit of the claims. He's been cleared. If like Spud you think the NBA is part of some conspiracy to protect a role player, I don't know what else to tell you.
Nothing. I don't care enough about Giddey to derail this thread any further.

I in no way criticized, disparaged, or demeaned Giddey, nor did I go into detail about his situation. I actually like his all around game despite his shooting issues, but he has the type of baggage this team absolutely cannot afford to take on. All it takes is for one person to change their mind about what happened and when those things happened and those "meritless allegations" become front page news.

Given how the playoffs went for OKC, I think they would move Giddey in a deal for Hunter. His shooting would be beneficial to them. I would not want him on the Hawks though at this point unless they think they could fix his shooting.
Giddey has other issues besides his shooting. No way the Hawks trade for him.

It was a smart tank job even if shameless.
An argument can be made that the Hawks soft tanked as well. It wasn't egregious, but once they secured a Play In spot, they pretty much stopped competing which added to the loss column. When they didn't sign Vit, I kind of got the impression they had no intention of being competitive in the Play In either. In any case, the stealth tanking worked and they were fortunate to get the #1 pick.

Dallas is playing in the Conference finals for the second time in 3 years and the Hawks are a disaster right now.. smh
Dallas missed the Playoffs and was in the Lottery last season. The Hawks will retool and have a similar turnaround.

They need to do the opposite of whatever is getting pushed by the media. Don't trade the pick and take Sarr. Don't trade Trae. Don't give away DJ. I'm still flabbergasted how the Hawks winning the Lottery meant they now had to trade Trae to the Spurs or the Lakers. That makes absolutely no sense. Sarr has been the consensus #1 pick for MONTHS and was the ideal fit for the Hawks until they actually got the # 1 pick. I hope the Hawks organization doesn't fall for any of these smokescreens or shenanigans. Drafting Sarr doesn't mean the Hawks have to immediately move Cap either. The Hawks were already thin in the frontcourt last season. The Hawks' first priorities this Summer should be to draft Sarr, resign Vit to a team friendly contract, and see how Sarr and Bufkin look in Summer League. Put AJ on the Summer League roster as well. There's plenty of time to make dumb trades after that.

This doesn't have to be a one off. This team can still be fixed. Trae is not the problem, and he is VERY much a part of the solution with the right pieces around him. Those pieces don't have to be superstars or All Stars either. This team can be right back on track as soon as next season if upper management is committed to putting a competitive product on the floor.

Would be awesome if that transpires. I'm just not expecting it. I won't call him a bust if he spends the entire year in CP or plays only bit minutes in blowouts. I hope that's not the case, but on a that needs to be competing for the playoffs, I'm not of the opinion that a 19-yo rookie is going to play a pivotal part. I do think he's closer to making an impact off the bench defense than on offense, but I still don't expect a ton from him.
If he's the pick, I have a feeling we will all be believers after Summer League.

1 hour ago, REHawksFan said:FWIW......A LOT of folks on here that want to draft Sarr have already said we have no expectation that he helps the Hawks early on, especially on offense. Personally, I don't expect anything from him this year. IF he were to give us anything positive it will be a bonus, but he's not part of the "getting better now" plan. That HAS to be done by Landry and Kyle by addressing upgrades at the 3 and 5 positions as well as fixing the fit issue between DJM and Trae.
I think he WILL help the Hawks right away if given minutes. Having a 7'1" guy with a 7'5" wingspan that can guard on the perimeter and provide paint protection will have an immediate impact on this team. This team's biggest issue last season was defense. As far as offense is concerned, all he has to do is catch lobs and shoot the occasional jumper and he'll be fine. I see Sarr as a bigger, stronger Mo G with more basketball experience and defensive polish.

Hawks have been there and done that already and were a Trae ankle injury away from the NBA Finals. Upper management sabotaged the rebuild by being cheap and this gift wrapped #1 pick gives them a second chance to get things back on track. The only difference between the Mavs and Hawks is the Mavs never stopped building around their star player. The decisions the Hawks make this offseason could get them right back where they were in '20-'21.

If his defense is Mobley level which I firmly believe it is then that's all I care about frankly. If he can just rim run and put in bunnies he's going to feast just on that from Trae.
Sarr can shoot from outside including 3. I'm not understanding this degree of criticism. Yes, he's clearly got a lot of work to do on offense. I might be the lone voice in the wilderness but I'd love to him, Jalen and OO out there and no one cares what position each guy is playing. Sarr as a three would be TERRIFYING because how do you match up with that?

He’s got an offensive bag, he’s shown the ability to do a lot of things. Now he just needs practice to be able to do it consistently. He’s starting off from a better place than trying to teach someone something new that the haven’t done before.I don’t care where is final primary position will end up being - 3, 4, or 5 - he’s going to grow into a very good player. It will just depend on the coaching, team around him, & how his body grows.
I'm not sure where the questions about his offensive potential are coming from. He has counter moves inside. a soft touch around the basket, and range all the way out to the three point line at 19 years old.

Not that I subscribe to crazy supes-isms, I wanna go on record and say I think it's possible the Holland guy ends up being the best player out of this draft......
This draft isn't as weak as people are saying. You have Sarr, Clingan, Knecht, Holland, and a few others that will be able to make an impact on an NBA roster right away. Of course, there's no clear-cut generational talent like a Wemby, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few All Stars or even a DPOY (Sarr) comes out of this Draft.

Based on what I’m seeing there is a consensus #1 whether people want to see it or not.. been that way for weeks or since March.
Its sort of similar how Banchero got momentum towards the end
I’m not falling into this “this is a weak draft” anymore after seeing Reed Sheppard who I think should be #2
the talent is there I just think people don’t know how to evaluate players that ESPN hasn’t hyped for 3 years
I feel like people didn't sour on Sarr until the Hawks got the #1 pick. I know that's a strange observation, but the general consensus before the Lottery was he was the best prospect in this draft. Now, he's getting picked apart for not being a finished product at 19?

Let the shoes no shoes debate begin...lol
Being a fluid run/jump athlete at 7ft without shoes puts him in unicorn territory. I've seen the shooting touch in the Combine vids, but I was more impressed with his play against the G League Ignite. He was featured during those two games and looked like the best player on the floor on both ends. I think people are turned off by his paltry stats with Perth, but he was only playing 17-18 minutes a game. Extrapolate those stats out to per 36 minutes and you have a better idea of how he was competing against grown men at 18 years old. I'm sold on him.

If the Hawks take Sarr and he busts, no one is going to kill them for it because he's literally the guy that the majority of mocks have as the best in the class. That's the point.
I don't disagree that drafting a bust that is obvious earlier is probably less bad than drafting a bust that lingers and keeps getting contracts due to potential. We agree there. Although Nerlens Noel played 9 seasons and was basically league average or better in 7-8 of them. So he's not exactly a bust as a player in general. But as a 1st pick, yeah.
Maybe looking at Sarr as a longer 19 year old Nic Claxton with more offensive and defensive potential on a cheaper contract will make some people feel better.

I don't have a definitive view on who we should draft yet (and my final view will be a comparatively ill-informed one I'm acknowledging now because I'm not a scout and am not going to go watch all these guys full games for the last few years).
But I will say that the defensive upside of a team with pieces like Bufkin, Hunter, JJ, Sarr, and OO is really exciting. Imagining those guys switching among one another would be a real revelation compared to what we've seen from the frontcourt especially in recent years. Would be really great to have an actual advantage in length and athleticism on the floor.
Adding Sarr or maybe even Clingan to this team would be huge. I prefer Sarr though due to his ability to block shots AND defend on the perimeter at a high level. I don't think people realize how close this team is to competing. Defense, and to a lesser degree the offensive lulls when Trae went to the bench, is what held this team back last season.

I'm not buying it. I think Draft night will pretty much go as originally projected with the Hawks drafting Sarr and then scrambling to make a deal to get someone else they like in the first or second round. I'm not a scout by any means, but there's a reason Sarr was the consensus #1 prospect before the Hawks won the Lottery. There's been nothing but smoke and crazy rumors since the Hawks got the #1 pick.
