If it's a sign and trade, he doesn't opt in. He opts out, Celts sign him to a deal that has been agreed upon with the team he is being traded to and then trade him. If it's to Atlanta they would only get the TPE back, as we can absorb him into the cap space.

Even if he opts in, couldn't we absorb him into salary cap space in a trade and then just extend him at a more reasonable number going forward?

I'm not sure I would want him starting, but he can play and defend 1-3 and would be a steady presence in the backcourt when Trae is out. His shooting isn't great, but it's been league average for the last couple seasons. I just think a guy with that competitive spirit and who plays that hard on defense would be a great fit, especially in a playoff setting.
