Good read from the AJC Link
2003
• Picked: 21
• Took: Frenchman Boris Diaw, he of the 4.6 career scoring average.
• Should have taken: ACC Player of the Year Josh Howard, who went to Dallas at No. 27. The ex-Wake Forest star started every game this season for the Western Conference semifinalists, averaging 12.6 points and 6.4 boards.
2001
• Picked: 3 and 27
• Took: Spain's Pau Gasol, who went on to win NBA Rookie of the Year honors, and Jamaal Tinsley, a four-year starter at point guard they picked for the Pacers.
• Should have taken: A chill pill and kept both of them. Instead, the Hawks dealt Gasol to the Grizzlies along with Brevin Knight and Lorenzen Wright in exchange for Shareef Abdur-Rahim and the 27th pick in the draft. The Hawks chose Tinsley with the 27th pick, then sent him to Indiana for a future first-round choice. They would have been better served hanging on to Tinsley or choosing Tony Parker (28) or Gilbert Arenas (31).
2000
• Picked: 6
• Took: DerMarr Johnson, who averaged 8.4 points as a second-year Hawk, then was involved in a car accident in which he fractured four vertebrae in his neck.
• Should have taken: Jamal Crawford (8th), Etan Thomas (12th), Desmond Mason (17th), Quentin Richardson (18th) or Michael Redd (43), all starters and double-digit scorers.
1999
• Picked: 10, 17, 20, 27
• Took: Jason Terry, Cal Bowdler, Dion Glover and Jumaine Jones, only two of whom are still in the league.
• Should have taken: Corey Maggette (13th), Jeff Foster (21st), Andrei Kirilenko (24th) and Manu Ginobili (57th). Build your team around those four and you're in the playoffs.
1998
• Picked: 20
• Took: Roshown McLeod, who was out of the league by 2001.
• Should have taken: Ricky Davis (21), Al Harrington (25) or Rashard Lewis (32) — two of whom ranked among the NBA's top 40 scorers and led their teams to playoff berths this season.
1997
• Picked: 22
• Took: The immortal Ed Gray, whose NBA career was even shorter than McLeod's.
• Should have taken: Bobby Jackson (23) or Stephen Jackson (43). Tito Jackson would have been an upgrade over Gray.
1996
• Picked: 28
• Took: Priest Lauderdale. Great name, no game. Gone from the NBA in two years.
• Should have taken: Othella Harrington (30), Jeff McInnis (37) or Malik Rose (44). Hawks didn't miss out on any All-Stars, but all three have been solid pros.
1995
• Picked: 16
• Took: Alan Henderson, who in his best of nine seasons as a Hawk averaged 14.3 points.
• Should have taken: Former Wisconsin sharpshooter Michael Finley (21), who's averaged 19.0 points as a pro.
1993
• Picked: 15
• Took: Doug Edwards, who scored 110 points — total — in two seasons in Atlanta.
• Should have taken: How about Sam Cassell (24), who has nearly scored half that many in one game?
1992
• Picked: 10
• Took: Adam Keefe. Warmed NBA benches in Atlanta, Utah and Golden State for eight of his nine pro seasons.
• Should have taken: Robert Horry (11), Latrell Sprewell (24) or P.J. Brown (29). Cagy veterans still going strong.
1991
• Picked: 9
• Took: Stacey Augmon. Former UNLV Runnin' Rebel averaged double figures in all five seasons in Atlanta; hasn't done it since.
• Should have taken: Terrell Brandon (11), who went on to hand out 4,400 assists and play in two All-Star Games before hanging up his high-tops in 2002.
1990
• Picked: 10
• Took: Rumeal Robinson. The man at Michigan, a journeyman in the pros.
• Should have taken: Elden Campbell (27) or Toni Kukoc (29), who between them have scored more than 20,000 points.
1989
• Picked: 23
• Took: Roy Marble. 21 games, 54 points, 14 turnovers, 16 fouls . . . and off to Denver. The draft class with Pervis Ellison and Danny Ferry at the top was one airball after another.
• Should have taken: Hawks wouldn't have been subject of "lost their marbles" cracks had they taken Vlade Divac (26) or Cliff Robinson (36).
1987
• Picked: 21
• Took: Dallas Comegys, who was traded to the Nets for a second-round pick before he even suited up for Atlanta.
• Should have taken: Reggie Lewis (22), who averaged 18 points in six NBA seasons before his tragic death.
1986
• Picked: 23
• Took: Billy Thompson, who was then traded for Ken Barlow. At least they didn't draft Chris Washburn (Atlanta traded for him).
• Should have taken: Arvydas Sabonis (24), Mark Price (25), Dennis Rodman (27), Jeff Hornacek (45) or Drazen Petrovic (60). The Hawks actually took Soviet center Arvydas Sabonis No. 77 the year before, but the NBA voided the pick because he hadn't turned 21.
1985
• Picked: 5
• Took: Jon Koncak, who rivals Benoit Benjamin as the biggest bust of the class of '85.
• Should have taken: All kinds of better options here, starting with Chris Mullin (7), Karl Malone (13), Joe Dumars (18) and A.C. Green (23).
