  1. Kasten works for Turner Sports - they are a silent partner in the deal, but will provide NO mgemt. Since Turner Sports is no long managing the Hawks, he's out of a job. He won't have 2 employers, Atlanta Spirit AND Turner Sports. Having 2 bosses is very different from having 2 jobs for 1 boss. For the Hawks to keep him, he'd have to quit the Braves. imvho
  2. I must be the Rodney Dangerfield of this board. Hey, I also said McDavid didn't have the dough. And hey, I posted that Dion was coming back 2 minutes before whatsisname and the world responds to his post not mine. I tell ya, I get no respect.
  3. highlight... Belkin "we have the financial resources to do what’s necessary to create a championship [basketball] team. We will do what’s required." http://www.nba.com/hawks/news/AOLAtlanta_S...e-84410-33.html
  4. http://hawks.realgm.com/showarticle.php?artid=352 good move
  5. The washington guys were part owners of the capitals i believe - and boston is a big hockey town - this deal sounds better for the thrashers too.
  6. that's exactly how the Braves found Andruw Jones. They didn't rely on the scouting services, but rather extended their search further than other teams.
  7. Gearon Sr. heads up the board of trustees for the Hawks. This fact means that he knows every detail of the McDavid deal. He probably saw that McDavid was stealing the teams too cheap, and that he could get them by offering a little more. I'm just guessing.
  8. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2003/bask...s.ap/index.html includes "local partners"
  9. 790 theZOne saying some other deal is about to close - your sources are right. Who is it????
  10. couple thoughts - AOL is deep in debt. they need a cash buyer, not a loaner. yeah, an arthur blank type isn't going to buy the hawks because blank is smart enough to know that an nba team is not a good investment now. the players are paid too much and ticket prices are too high, and only a couple teams with superstars have a chance to win it all. here's the Sunnyside - JT can now save face (though he doesn't need to) He can say that his badmouthing of the Hawks was about the new owner, and he's happy to come back and play for AOL.
  11. 1) Superstar players come in all colors, and they're rare in any color. 2) Moronic idiots come in all colors. 3) Yes, some white players are overhyped. The NBA wants to sell tickets to white fans. Some white fans want to see some white players. (Note the use of the word, "some") It cuts both ways. How many brothers do you see at Thrashers games?
  12. a simple up or down vote. If you think they will match and trade the contract, vote yes.
  13. 86 celts produced 4 NBA head coaches - Bird, Johnson, Carlisle and Ainge. But the winner might have to be the 66 Celts, which produced 5 NBA head coaches and a helluva college coach. Bill Russell Don Nelson Tom Sanders Tom Heinsohn KC Jones and John Thompson.
  14. The 1974 Celts may have had more players go on to be NBA head coaches than any other team. Can anyone find a team with more? Don Nelson Don Chaney Paul Silas Dave Cowens Paul Westphal good trivia Q.
  15. Cowens goes head to head with Kareem in the finals - Cowens gets the ring. Havlicek was MVP of the series. getalife
  16. "with the sale negotiations said McDavid would be obligated to continue the payments, but*** a lender ***likely would require Turner to replace the collateral " I'm not saying McDavid's broke. I'm just saying he can't pay all cash for the $230 mil equity side of the deal. The articles don't say McDavid doesn't want the Hawks as collateral, it says ****"a lender"**** Who is "a lender"???? It's whoever McDavid is borrowing money from to do the deal. There'd be no need for "a lender" and no need to shift collateral if McDavid was paying 230 mil in cash and assuming the other 130 in debt. No one will lend him the money on something that has already been pledged as collateral. Yes, it's a complicated deal, but it's complicated BECAUSE mcDavid is trying to finance it. If he was a cash buyer, it woulda closed before the draft.
  17. Ssomeone was talkin about a trade with Utah earlier - how 'bout Utah developing DD behind Marc Jackson?
  18. Maybe the trade is a 'shot across the bow wake-up call to JT and his agent, letting them know it's time to get serious and pull their asking price out of the clouds.
  19. No, I don't think there is a difference of opinion. the debt plus cash is the total number. The key is that McDavid isn't putting up all cash for the non-debt part of the deal. Which PROVES my point posted earlier that he DOESN'T have the MONEY! He needs to HOCK the HAWKS to make the deal work, but Turner already HOCKed the HAWKS to build the areana. No one will want to lend McDavid money and have junior standing to recover debt BEHIND the city of Atlanta's claim as bond issuer for Phillips arena. Maybe he can HOCK the THRASHERS too! - but with SABRES gone bankrupt I don't know any banker stoopid enough to take a HOCKEYTEAMWITHADRAWL as collateral in a deflationary environment. If he had the $230 mill, it wouldn't be a problem, but he obviously needs to INCREASE the debt above the already stated $130 mil number, or else he wouldn't need new collateral. I said it before, and this article proves my point. HE DOESN'T HAVE THE DOUGH. end of rant
  20. ... the Thrashers havent' had any trouble signing free agents?? They took care of Slava, and they just signed another pretty good player last week. Now, maybe you'll tell me that McDAvid's gonna let the Thrashers run themselves and be "hands-on" with the Hawks. Kinda like Kasten was "hands-on" with the Braves but let the Hawks run themselves. But I'm not buying that line of fish.
  21. Utah fields the whitest team in the NBA for a reason. It's smack in the middle of mormon land. There's no way they trade 3 white guys for a muslim. No offense inteded to anyone.
  22. I think the Hawks will sign JT, Dion and Smitty (for leadership and citizenship reasons). I don't think they will offer DJ a contract. Who knows what all the medical ramifications of DJ's situation are, but I'd guess that no exec will risk him wearing their teams' colors and be paralyzed in a freak accident. Hope I'm wrong, but when they drafted Boris, it seemed like they were trying to draft for exactly the reason they got DJ, i.e. a backcourt presence that can't be mismatched with JT on the floor.
