Disagree @JayBirdHawk, only thing I learned from this thread is @ATLSmith is my sister from another mother.

Oh and I also learned there's a @JayHAWK registered here too.  Who tha heck is that?  Probably JBurd setting up an alter-ego for later.

Word to the wise, if you see @DowntonKG, that'll be my alter.

     Awww, that's so....  wait.  What?

  2. Well, nice knowing you @Spud2Nique

If it does come down to a rebuild...

Hold your horses there, Finn.  This is still hypothetical.

As I was saying, if the Hawks do rebuild, then I hope they are able to sign Sap or another marquee free agent so they can at least get something in return via a future trade.  The other benefit is having veteran leadership on the team. It would be like having our very own verson of Han Solo guiding our young Luke Skywalkers.

Dwight can play the part of the always cuddly Chewbacca.

And while this is going on we can all pretend that everything is just peaches.

  3. Looks like Hawks were also interested in Niel Olshey of the Blazers, but were denied permission to speak with him.  I think it's crazy that teams can deny talks like this.  I would think this causes some bad blood between the candidate and the team denying talks, unless they have a really good understanding.

Interesting that the article says the Hawks were particularly interested in Niel's good draft history.

  4. After their season ended almost three weeks ago, Atlanta Hawks’ coach Mike Budenholzer and point guard Dennis Schröder got together on Wednesday.

Schröder, from Germany, posted a photo on Thursday of himself and Budenholzer in Hamberg after the two met up for dinner.

“All the way from Atlanta to Germany Coach Bud visited me yesterday in Hamburg !! Had great Dinner & talked about a lot of things (Atlanta Hawks),” Schröder wrote.

Awesome. I still really like this kid and think he has a very bright future.

Does he have some maturing to do? Yes.

Could his decision making improve? Well, yea.

    But overall, I'm glad he's a Hawk.

You're totally missing the point, Peo.  Here's the process:

    1. Tank.  You tank hard, baybee.

    2. Get the #1 pick ... 'cause all you gotta do is be bad and you'll jus' get it.

    3. That #1 pick becomes a HOF-caliber guy.  Again, it's automatic.  It jus' happens.

    4. Even tho that guy's a HOFer, you'll still be bad so you'll get another #1 pick and since he'll also be a HOFer guys'll be paying you to join the Hawks then you have a contender 'cause all them rookies will just blaze through the playoffs 'cause thas how it happens in Franchise Mode in 2K and even if it doesn't work, I'll just start another Franchise and save that over the first one and if that don't work I'll just start a Career Mode and I'll get a 99 rating and then I'll go 82-0, baybee!!

When you think about it, this pretty much what Cleveland did.

At the time, it was believed the Spurs deliberately tanked after Robinson went down. I don't think there is truly definitive evidence one way or the other. However, i was attending UCONN at the time and the Boston sports talk was livid about the Spurs "tanking" and winning the lottery. Boston, i think, had the worst record in the NBA that year, or at least worse than the Spurs.

For the overall argument, I suggest the Hawks look at what the C's have done twice now. Get bad, collect assets , and then make smart trades and FA signings to get better once the "core" is ready to compete. What Soth is arguing, i think, is that there are ways to get superstars, but the bottom line is you have to have assets to get them (e.g. Divac for Kobe), or have the gravitas to pull in superstar players in FA (e.g., Lakers and Shaq, or GS and Durant). Unfortunately, the Hawks have NONE of this right now.

This can be easier said than done.  Boston was smart to trade the aging "Big 3" before their contracts expired.  It allowed them to maintain or improve their asset base.  This is why it is crucial for the Hawks to sign Sap or pick up a FA of equivalent value this off-season.  Doing so will maintain the Hawks asset base give them options at the trade deadline should they decide to reboot with a younger core.

Thankfully, the Hawks "asset balance sheet" actually looks pretty good, or at least much better than it has in the past (I'm looking at you Billy King).  With two incoming first round picks, two incoming second round picks, only one outgoing pick that is actually a second round swap, and the emerging talents of Dennis, Prince, Bembry (?), and Hardaway (maybe?), the Hawks are in great position for a team that isn't actively trying to rebuild from the ground up.

  7. The Hawks should keep Tim if they don't sign Sap. Tim is still very young and the kind of talent you want on a rebuilding team.

To me the ideal scenario would be to sign Sap and Tim, try to get a legit starting SF but blow it up at the trade deadline if still stuck where they are today. Difficult to do given cap constraints but worth a shot.

Not another late 1st. We already have two of them. That 2nd we have is a late 1st basically. If late 1st develop into role players, you got good value. More times than not, it's guys like Jared Cunningham and Jenkins.

I'll take whatever picks I can get.

Trade him for what? Terrance Ross and a late 1st rounder. That wasn't value as we already have too much of that type of value in our arsenal. We just need to be honest, it's time to rebuild.

And a first rounder would help the Hawks rebuild.

  10. Dwight will be here next year and Baze will be given until the trade deadline to show improvement. I wouldn't mind if Baze was traded earlier but is value is I the tank and the Hawks will give him another chance.

Can't believe someone suggested getting rid of Dennis. He was arguably our most consistently good player in this series. His decision making will be much better next year but he does need to work a bit on defense.

  11. Damn. I suck at this. Need to stop picking 4 and 5 seeds to make to the finals. Just can't help picking an underdog. I blame Atlanta sports in general.

At least I got the overall winner correct.

Unless this team wants to head straight to needing to fully blow it up, they need to start taking risks on low floor high ceiling guys. I mean Swanigan, Motley, and Hart may all be solid pros but they all have a low ceiling.

Happ's not going to be a first rounder.

    1

Makes sense.  Someone like Schröder.  When the Hawks drafted him everyone was like, "Who?"  Or, at least I was.  But after his first year it was evident that he could be something special.  Now, if he would just stop throwing the ball away (a conversation for another thread perhaps)

  13. I see what you are saying about him being a bit slow down the court.  What interests me the most is that he can shoot but also hold his own in the post.  I wouldn't expect him to put up the same rebounding numbers in the pro's, but that's why we have Dwight.

Of the two alternatives you mentioned, Hartstein looks really interesting.

  14. Caleb Swanigan is just short of ideal height (6'8.5") for a NBA PF but he has the weight (247 lb) to hold his own as a rookie and an outstanding wingspan (7'3.5").  He's shown to be an elite rebounder, has solid post moves and, to top it all off, is a very good shooter.  Most mock drafts have him available when the Hawks pick but I wouldn't be surprised if he goes a lot earlier.

What do you all think of him?
