  1. Ha, yeah, just like last year: when we had our best pitcher tucked away in AAA, while our team struggled. - while overpaying for pitching we didn't even need - All cause we're worried about not being able to afford him in 4or 5 years. That's the kind of philosophy that keeps you in 3rd or 4th place every year.

Sorry for the confusion. I mean Some type of platoon involving Cabrera/Diaz/Jordan. Derosa isn't the power threat either. He and Diaz are pretty much equal in terms of power/slugging and Heyward woudn't be far behind if at all as a rookie.

Anyway, just glad the Giants signed him. They love overpaying for overated old guys too.

It wasn't the pitching that kept us out of the playoffs. It was the hitting. We wasted too many good pitching performances too early in the season because we couldn't bring in any run support.

And in terms of the "Wait" for prospects... delaying their arbitration by that much time is a huge difference. I don't think a lot of fans realize this... but delaying an arbitration can save an organization millions of dollars, especially for someone like Heyward who, if he pans out as expected, will be demanding $15-20MM per year, that money saved during the Wait is very useful. That millions of dollars is crucial to a mid-market team like the Braves.

  2. We lost because of Woodson. He left Bibby out of the 4th quarter until it was too late. Every one knows it's Bibby who conducts this offense. When we couldn't get anything going on offense in the 4th, Woodson should have thrown Bibby back in as quick as he could, but instead he left Crawford and Johnson out there to their own little iso plays and left the offense in shambles. We were trying to run a halfcourt offense without a coordinator (Bibby). When we started scoring again, it was when we were playing an up-tempo offense... just bad coaching by Woody.

  3. I would not mess with our team until we see what it can do for a year or two (of course losing JJ will mean the team has already been messed with). We are young, improving, and pretty darn good as is. If we can win enough regular season games to get homecourt advantage, we can beat anyone.

Chillz was my favorite Hawk but I think Marvin fits better. Marvin just needs to get some confidence. If you go to a game, watch him shoot in warmups, he never misses. He'll always be clumsy, but he can shoot. I think someone needs to convince him to hit the gym for a year or two and add some muscle. Maybe the muscle will help his balance as well as his confidence. Otherwise, he's just a good role player for our team. It's just disappointing that we drafted a role player so high.

It's too bad that shots warming up don't mean jackshit. 75% of the players in the league make wide open shots especially in practice.

  4. Bay grew up in Western Canada, I can't see him coming here especially since that amount of money is less than some other teams are offering. The Mets are offering 4/65. The Red Sox offered 4/60. Bay's agent is pushing the Red Sox to offer 4/65 or possibly a 5 year deal. I can't see him taking less money to come to Atlanta.

DeRosa is going to be a backup wherever he goes. If he goes to NY, he is going to play behind tex, arod, jeter, and cano. If he comes here he will be behind our starter. The difference is he can win a title in NY, or he can get a lot of playing time here with our starter's injury history.

I hope that 5 man rotation isn't who you see as our 1-5 starters (in terms of jj being our 4 and hanson our 5).

DeRosa will be demanding a contract worth $6-8M. That's not exactly the type of money you pay your utility player - even if you're a big market team like the Yankees. If he went there, he'd be the starting left fielder.

And if you read my post, I said that rotation was ordered by salary...

  5. "Dec. 22 - 11:47 pm et

Coach Mike Woodson said Tuesday that he hopes that injured Joe Smith (thumb) can return sometime after Christmas.

His return should not impact fantasy leagues, other than to steal a few minutes here and there from the Hawks' frontcourt."

...so I'm guessing soon. Hopefully as soon as the Cavaliers games. We really need him for the back-to-back one.

I tried reloading and trying again like it asks but it still brings me to that message. It's no big deal though I was just posting a simple comment in the Lounge, and I just wanted to know why this popped up. Never happened to me before. Thanks.

  7. Call me crazy, but I like to still hold hope that we will sign Jason Bay. We certainly don't have the money to do it now, but if we trade McLouth we will. People think McLouth is a huge piece of this puzzle - he's not. There is someone who is waiting to be given another opportunity in the minors and his name is Jordan Schafer. Once he gets over his wrist injury and sees more time in the minors, I believe he'll be a much better leadoff hitter than McLouth.

Trade McLouth for prospects to Chicago, and sign Jason Bay to a 5 Yr, $75,000,000 ($15,000,000/Yr), sign 1B Chad Tracy to a $1,000,000 with incentives and then the team would look like this.

Incomplete roster... still would need a few more bench pieces... but here's my roster...and the rotation is ordered in salary.

    SP Derek Lowe

    SP Tim Hudson

    SP Kenshin Kawakami

    SP Jair Jurrjens

    SP Tommy Hanson

    LR Kris Medlen

    MR Eric O'Flaherty

    MR Jesse Chavez

    MR Michael Dunn

    SU Takashi Saito

    SU Peter Moylan

    CL Billy Wagner

    CA Brian McCann

    1B Troy Glaus

    2B Martin Prado

    3B Chipper Jones

    SS Yunel Escobar

    LF Jason Bay

    CF Melky Cabrera (eventually Schafer)

RF Matt Diaz (eventually Jason Heyward)

Bench would be something like Tracy, Infante, Ross, etc.

I don't think Marlon Byrd is the real deal. If you're hitting in Arlington Park, you should always have high amount of power / doubles if you're a true power hitter. What Byrd is is a .280 hitter, but he's not a 20 HR type of guy.

  8. Would you guys be in favor of bringing the 'fro back to Atlanta next year? A lot of people aren't liking how Marvin plays, so I was thinking maybe if we offer up the starting spot to Josh Childress (hopefully Crawford won't get offended by this) and trade Marvin for a big we could make things work out again.

Something tells me that Childress doesn't want to be back in Atlanta though. Because if he did, he would have been back by now, but maybe he saw no spot for him left on this team after he saw Marvin re-signed and Crawford traded for?

    Starters:

    PG Mike Bibby

    SG Joe Johnson

    SF Josh Childress

    PF Josh Smith

    C Zaza Pachulia

    Bench:

    PG Jeff Teague

    SG Jamal Crawford

    SF [Draft]

    PF [big from Marvin trade]

    C Zaza Pachulia

  9. This team doesn't look like the real deal anymore, night in and night out they prove that they are the real deal. But how can we tell or be sure? Many of our losses have been uncharacteristic... were those just 'bad games' by our Hawks or do we really have huge weaknesses that the league justh asn't discovered yet?

  10. I can't answer that question. Considering that they're my lifelong teams, I want BOTH of them to win championships. They, along with the Braves are the only NFL, NBA, and MLB teams I know. But I do think the Falcons have some sort of hex on them. Where were these injuries last year? They resemble the soldiers from the Bataan death march than an NFL team with so many players missing games. And the NFL schedule maker has to be a Saints fan; who the hell would scheduled them to play not one, not two, but FOUR teams coming off bye weeks? Will New Orleans get the same deal next year? I doubt it because they're the NFL darling-du-jour right now.

Okay, okay, I'm off my soapbox. Not that I'm bitter but if the Saints don't make the Super Bowl, I'll be as giddy as a 10-year old getting his first BMX for Christmas.

They won't make the Super Bowl.

  11. Hawks,

for some reason I have found the Hawks more enjoyable to watch this year than the Falcons. I have always been a much bigger Falcons fan though. I want the Falcons to win out and finally get back to back winning seasons but I doubt they can make it to the playoffs let alone make a run once they get there. The Hawks however are at the start of what seems to be becoming a beautiful ride. I feel this team can hang with anybody and I am ready for them to prove all the doubters wrong and knock off the Big 3 in the East come playoff time

He's not asking who you think has a better chance of making the playoffs... he's asking which team between the two you'd prefer to win it all...

I'd prefer the Hawks, personally. Because we were even bigger underdogs coming into our season than the Falcons were. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge Falcons fan... but right now it doesn't seem like it's their year. They don't deserve anything more than the Hawks IMO. Granted, they've been hit bad with the injury bug... but the Hawks were downplayed this season and kind of tossed aside for the 'Big 3'. If we win a championship it'll make a huge statement to all the haters and nonebelievers (which is pretty much every one else besides the fans here in Atlanta).
