  1. Sorry, not to be a downer. Just had to get that off my chest. Go Hawks!

Don't apologize. You're right. Some of that stuff from last night was just stupid. I have no idea why they feel as if they have to stand in the same spot for 14 seconds before they start working on getting a shot off. We need a real coach in the worst way.

  2. I like how excited we get when Woody uses a *gasp* zone defense. This guy is a professional basketball coach. He's supposed to make adjustments. The fact that it took the team going down 3 to 2 against a young and injured Milwaukee team for him to decide to change things up a little just proves what a buffoon he is. You can say its the players, and I'm sure it is partially, but I don't see how anyone can say that Woody is helping matters at all.

Exactly. Woodson actually hurts the team. All he did was do something that he should have done 3 games ago. What kind of an idiot coach do you have to be for it to literally take you several games before you make an obvious adjustment?

  3. It's not the system he's exploiting it's the players. With Mike Bibby in the lineup it's pretty much a no-win situation for Woody.

It actually is the system that Skiles is exploiting. It's not Mike Bibby that Brandon Jennings is blowing by. Jennings is blowing by Al Horford and Zaza Pachulia when they're trying to guard him out on the perimeter. They're waiting until they get a guard matched up on our Center and then they exploit that matchup. They've been doing it with great success since Game 3.

  4. What would be the purpose of putting Teague in the game if we are still switching everything ?

Exactly. It doesn't matter who is in the game on defense if Woody keeps on allowing them to match up their PG against our Centers. What needs to happen is Woody going man-to man and letting Teague see if he can contain Jennings.

  5. The switching defense allows the defender to be lazy.

Instead of fighting through picks, you just switch.

It also takes advantage of so-called versatility. Meaning, that because we have a team full of 6'7" - 6'9" players, we fit better with a switch.

The problem with the switch is that in a series, like we are seeing, a coach can game plan for the switch and get his fastest guy matchuped against our bigs. There's supposed to be bailouts and help defense but the truth is... when a team has a fast ball handler who can make a good pass to a shooter, we're in trouble. In game 1, Skiles employed the same tactics he has used in games 3 and 4. The thing is that the shots were not falling then. Now the shots are falling.

Exactly. This defense allows the defenders to be lazy and Woody is a lazy coach who doesn't like to think. That's a bad combination.

  6. This game alone should get Woodson fired.

Here's a free coaching tip you bald idiot:

The Bucks KNOW you are going to switch EVERY DAMN TIME on Jennings. So we get stuck with a big on Jennings EVERY TIME. We should have trusted Teague enough to trust him with defensive assignments on Jennings at key points during the game to STOP HIM.

But no, our bald idiot of a coach never changes, never adjusts, never does anything different.

WHY CAN WOODSON NOT SEE THIS?!!!!!!!! I'd rather put Teague in the game and let him match up with Jennings ALL DAY as opposed to letting Jennings go at Zaza for an easy layup any time he wants it. Woodson is THE DUMBEST coach I've EVER seen in my life!!!!!!!

  7. Joe has played in 73 games this year. He has shot below 40% 21 times. Now if he was getting to the free throw line that would be acceptable. In my opinion, shooting lower than 40% for a game as the number one scoring option is a failure. So by that standard, Joe failed his team 21 out of 73 times or 28.7% of the time. FYI, he shot under 30% 3 times.

For the season, Joe is 609 of 1339 for 45.5% which is very respectable. What is not respectable is 1550 points on 1339 shots. That works out to 1.15758 points per attempt. Comparing that to Lebron James, Lebron took 1484 shots (145 more than JJ) and scored 2197 points (647 more than JJ) for 1.48 points per attempt or .33 points per attempt more. On a 20 shot attempt night that works out to 6.7 points. That's typically the difference between winning and losing most nights.

Joe's problem is offensive efficiency that goes beyond field goal percentage. Josh Smith for example scores at 1.275 per attempt. Kobe Bryant 1.266. Amare 1.506. Jamal Crawford 1.28.

Possessions are precious in the NBA and that is the problem with Joe. He doesn't get to the line. His numbers are actually inflated because he takes the Technical free throws for the team. Not much but it shows the extended difference. Joe doesn't get to the line and doesn't get the extra points to make himself worthy. He pulls up way too much from 5-10 feet and doesn't get to the rim.

The Atlanta Hawks average 1.224 points per attempt. Joe Johnson averages 1.16...we average .06 points more every time someone other than Joe attempts a basket. That's just cold hard facts. In the world of producing while shooting, Joe isn't producing.

I understand double teams and off nights and everything else but other players face other challenges. For Joe Johnson to be worth the money he wants, he needs to start attacking the rim.

EXCELLENT post. Joe doesn't get to the freethrow line. That's one of my biggest gripes with him. If he got to the line more, then he might be one of those players that is just under the elite level. However, being that he doesn't, he's about 2 notches below elite. When his shot is not falling, he's absolutely useless because he won't be getting to the freethrow line.

  8. Rose did nail it. He probably only watches the Hawks a few times a year, and he managed to figure out in a few games what Mike Woodson hasn't managed to figure out in several years. That Isolation crap just isn't going to work in the playoffs. We need to run an offense that gets everybody involved. That way, we won't have those long stretches where our offense just stagnates while everybody is watching Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford be ballhogs.

  9. The problem is the Hawks switching defense. They would just run a pick and role to get Salmons matched up with Horford or Smith and then he would abuse them.

What the Hawks really need is a new coach.

Exactly. I don't think I've ever seen Woody just tell the team to just play straight man-to-man defense. He's a one-trick pony. If his switching D isn't working, he doesn't even bother to try anything else.

  10. How are you guys not getting this. In College Teague was terrible playing without the ball in his hands. In the Pros TEague has been terrible playing without the ball in his Hands. Woodson is trying to play Teague in situations where he can have the ball in his hands which is when playing with Backups. The problem is that even playing with the ball in his hands against backups Teague has still been pretty bad which really limits how he can be used.

If Teague had shown any ability at all this season to knock down open shots then I think he would get more minutes with the starters.

So I'll ask this- how many of you clamoring for Teague to play recognized Acie's rookie year that he wasn't capable of helping a playoff team? Its to Woodsons credit that he did reconize that in Acie long before the fans did.

There is one little problem with what you typed there. When Woody actually does let Teague play, it seems to me as if Jamal Crawford is the primary ball handler and Teague is pretty much playing the OG position. That's not exactly playing to Teague's strengths. Woodson is doing a terrible job with developing Teague. Rondo can't shoot that well either, but he's a heck of a PG. If Woodson was coaching Rondo, he'd probably have him playing as on OG while limiting him to a few minutes a game. Rondo's confidence would have been crushed a long time ago.

  11. Ok, thanks man.

  12. The Hawks had seven of their 13 turnovers in the fourth quarter and made just 6 of 20 shots in the period. Once again they appeared baffled against a zone defense. “I can’t fault the effort,” Woody said. “The effort was great. We got the tempo the way we wanted it. But then their zone slowed us down.”

Uhhh, yeah. Zones usually do tend to slow down and stifle ISO offenses. That's why it's important to actually have an offense in place that you can turn to when the ISO stuff isn't working. It amazes me that Woody doesn't know this.

  13. We don't have "that guy" on our team.

It's not JJ , because " that guy" could take the ball to the basket and get to the freethrow

line , instead of shooting iso jumpers over and over again.

    Free-throw attempts

    Josh 342

    Jamal 246

    JJ 219

    Al 211

Joe is 76th in free throw attempts per game.

Yi Jianlian , Hakim Warrick and Reggie Evans get to the ft line more often than JJ

    That's just sad

Exactly. Joe doesn't get to the FT line nearly enough. If the team really needs to score, we know that Joe isn't going to take it hard to the rim. That is a major flaw in his game.

  14. I just loved it when we kept playing the same old switching defense that led to Mike Bibby guarding Dirk Nowitzki, which then led to Jason Kidd hitting wide-open 3s. I'm sorry, but if Woody doesn't care about offense, then he could at least be smart when it comes to defense. However, Woodson isn't smart when it comes to either aspect of the game. I don't care what our record ends up being this year, all I know is that the Hawks need to upgrade the Head Coach position. I simply can't stand to see us do the same old things over and over without attempting to make an adjustment when those things are not working.
