How about basing it on play vs. similar competition. i.e. College Basketball.
There are many guys who dominate the HS ranks. Guys who put up 60 against HSers because they were the biggest or most athletic around. But when they play that one year in College, they play against other guys who dominated their HSers. All of these players are forced to play in a system with offensive schemes and defensive schemes similar to NBA play.
Johnson didn't do well and didn't stay long in College. Similar to Marvin Williams. Marvin Williams came off the bench in college.
That's the basis you're looking for... Your potential is validated by what they do amoung like competition...
That's not summer league. In summer league nobody is playing defense and the offensive scheme gets broken down to a series of iso plays.
Right now, it's just best to wait and see.
He didn’t do well in college? What games were you watching? Am I misunderstanding what you’re saying here?

One of the reasons he fell was the big unknown with injuries and his leaving multiple HS and Duke. Some have translated that into him being a head case. I translate it into a discount buying opportunity. Risk/reward in a good ratio as most #20 picks aren’t anything special.
Him leaving school to focus on the draft in a year where pro players skipped due to Covid, the NCAA was being sued for illegally blocking players from being paid and other basketball players opted out of the tourney to protect their pro careers makes someone’s decision to leave school need a much more nuanced analysis than if someone did it in 1995. It is a different world right now.
We’ll get to know him over time and find out if it was just a media narrative or not.
As a Duke fan I’m well aware of his history and none of that makes me feel anyway about him. The switching high school thing could be chalked up to so much that idk how anyone would try to pull anything from that. That’s what these kids do now. It’s not the old days and people need to understand that. He’s not a trouble maker, very quiet kid who goes about his business. And we’re doing a lot of talking bc he was frustrated in a summer league game. I just think the board is doing the most right now

i can see JJ turning out like smoove, not quite a bust, shows flashes of talent but also a head case and could never quite put it together to achieve stardom. though if he's putting up 9WS year like smoove did at his peak that's tremendous value for a 20th pick.
What???? Lol why is he a head case?

People get married to their opinions and will say anything to convince themselves it’s real. To say JC only gets numbers bc he gets more touches than anybody like he wasn’t an extremely efficient scorer. 40% from 3 and close to 60% from the floor period. It’s amazing how hard you’re going for this man. I normally agree with you but this is a hill you’re going to die on alone

Which one would Trae want?
Good question...probably Zion. With him and Collins he can literally just throw the ball towards the rim and somebody’s gonna catch it

I don’t know who I’d rather have more now...I wanted Cam before seeing theses lil exhibition games but now I’m torn between both Rj and Zion. Zion is just different. What he can do doesn’t come along often. His ability to crash the boards looks special. He’s a better passer than I would’ve thought and he has good iq from what I’ve seen so far. RJ looks like just an overall really good player. Can do a lil bit of everything but seems to be a really good passer. Has the potential to be great defensively and that would work wonders next to Trae so I really don’t know who I want lol

Apparently we traded cash for him...don’t really know how that works but whatever

Shot selection, that’s what bothered me. Not that he was missing bc he’s a shooter, they’ll fall eventually but he was pressing and taking bad shots. I know he’ll get that together eventually because as others have stated a hundred times already it was just his first summer league game. Let’s all relax, let the kid regroup and see what he has the next game. Small steady improvements is all I’m looking for right now.

Since 30 footers don't count any more than 23 footers, why shoot from so far out?
Just trying to let you know he won’t have a problem with nba range. As far as his shot selection goes that was one of the many reasons I wasn’t a fan of his. He’s a hawk now tho so I’ll be rooting for every crazy shot to go in at this point

So Trae is supposedly a great three point shooter? 36% even though the NCAA 3 point line is 2-3 feet closer in than the NBA. How much is his percentage going to drop when he starts shooting NBA 3 pointers?
Take it you didn’t watch him much lol. This kid was shooting consistently from about 30 feet during the season. He rarely took college 3s. Most of his were beyond nba range to begin with

Barrett isn’t a shooter but he’s a really good facilitator with good size, length, and athleticism. He’s also a good defender. He knows how to score he’s just not a shooter.

He predicted it. He wanted JJJ but said the hawks would end up with Young and Huerter

Here we go trying to predict the future again. This guy just posted about 14 players that he hasn’t even seen take a dribble in college and asked why should he be excited about these players lol.

No Grayson isn’t JJ by any stretch of the imagination BUT I wouldn’t mind him on the team. He would never be a starter but as a shooter off the bench we could do a lot worse. Reduce his role, make him a shooter and he’ll be ok

They hosed us on that call. Oh well tho. Had plenty of chances to win that game just couldn’t pull it off
