  1. Well time for my positives....Matt Ryan has erased all doubt about his ability to throw the deep ball. That pass to Julio in the second quarter was just beautiful. Then the lazer to Tamme right after that. Whatever he did in the offseason to strengthen his arm has really worked.

Tevin Coleman is a player. There's not much he can't do. We already know how good free is but tevin shows me more and more every week. His top end speed makes him such a threat.

Dont need to spend much time on Julio bc hes Julio. I've said on here for years that he's the best wideout in football.

What I really loved tho was Vic. The kid is really showing how good he is and how good he can be. 2 sacks and another forced fumble that actually led to a touchdown. The kid is going to be special. And really the pass rush was coming from everywhere. And I see Grady in the backfield so much, he's just not making the play when he's back there. He'll eventually get it all together and those two will be a force for a long time.

Debo is a playmaker and I love that but he had a bad game and that's to be expected. He's a rookie and he and Campbell both made rookie mistakes. It happens, they'll learn

  2. Wanted to give myself enough time to calm down before I commented but good lord was that a horrible no call. As blatant as you can want a pass interference to be. They played their asses off and deserved a chance to win that game. Matt balled out in the second half after taking a beating in the first half. Defense was amazing. We played them coming off a bye in their building after spending a week on the west coast. I'm proud of these guys. We're good people...really good

  3. our entire starting lb group was out, and even still they put out a remarkable performance. I was impressed by the aggressiveness Of the front 7 in this game. Our secondary is the strength of the defense but they actually got some help today. Ismael was playing mlb today, that's just crazy to me. I said earlier that I could see the physicality and aggressiveness building with this unit and today it was on full display. They will keep improving thru the year and ride this offense until possibly next year when they become a dominant unit in their own right. The future is bright ladies and gentlemen

Nope cause when I made it, it did look like the same ole Falcons. But now we have a season-long Falcons thread on Hawksquawk. lol

Falcons played playoff football today. Proud of the unit and the way they controlled the game. Ryan and Shanahan found a weakness of the vaulted Bronco defense and exploited it. The O-line controlled the trench and our RB's stepped up huge. Not ready to say anything on the pass rush since it was a rookie QB that held the ball too long and Beasley was lined up vs. an injured RT... But Beasley did play with fire today to get at that QB and showed everyone to not call him bust so soon. Good win vs. a great defense. Very interested in next weekend vs. Seattle. We get out of Seattle up 5-1, we'll have a serious shot at SB with this team.

Yeah man they were playing with an intensity that I haven't seen from them in forever. Regardless of who he was lined up against Vic absolutely beasted today. The pass rush as awhile looked like world beaters today. I said before that they just needed to get their rotations together and they would be ok, I don't expect this every week but they will be adequate and will get plenty of chances with this offense playing from in front this year. I'm still worried about the Seattle game bc they're staying out west all week. Tough task

Think that the Broncos and the  Seahawks represent much more than a litmus test because of their recent history of being in and winning the Superbowl. Not really sure about the success rate for us but before the start of this season there were many wanting  Quinn's head even if TD's involvement has been substantially more responsible for the past few year's issues because he was here and Dan was not. Don't care if it sounds like an excuse or not because we're talking about two of the four best teams in the NFL the last couple of years we are playing here. Let's see what happens.

That's how I feel, these two games aren't going to make me fall off the train if we lose them...these are great teams we are playing and we're playing them on the road no less. Also we're staying on the west coast in between the two games. That's a tough task. I want to see how they play but if they lose its not the end of the world.

Game in Denver will be tough.

It will be, very tough. I'm not going to use that game as a selling point on "if I believe I'm the team tho". Denver is great, hard place to play, I just can't wait to see what happens

What are you talking about? I AM talking about what teams are today.

Saints = Drew Brees w/ no receivers around him, no legit running game, and a terrible defense. A team that isn't half the team they were in 2009.

Carolina = Good all-around offense focused on Cam Newton. Great defense, but this is a team that isn't the Carolina that we've become accustomed to over the past four seasons. Cam is off and that secondary was torched by Atlanta without Josh Norman.

Raiders = Up and coming team with talent, but still a lot to prove. Carr/Cooper show.

Stop being short-sighted and subjective on this team.  Atlanta hasn't had a pass rush for 10 years... Ryan is great with protection, but the only difference is Mack on the O-Line. Am I supposed to believe that one player will have that kind of effect?  I don't believe a team can change overnight.

My man above me already hit on this but I'll respond anyway since you were responding to me. This didn't happen overnight. If you're looking at wins and losses to be your only indicator of progression then maybe I can understand you feeling that way. Our tackles were both very highly rated last year (Matthews was top 5 and Schraeder was the top ranked RT last year) so yes a pro bowl center CAN make that big of a difference when you're already that good outside. Freeman is one of the best backs in the league but got worn out last year towards the end which is why it's so beautiful to see Teco having the type of impact he's having bc it is going to give us to great fresh backs all year. We have more weapons for Matt now and don't have to forc feed Julio. You try to stop Julio and we run it down your throat, you try to stop the run and we pass it all over the field.

Im not being short sighted, I just know what I'm seeing. They were on the verge last year and made moves to strengthen the team this year. Now I'm not saying that we will go to the super bowl or anything this year but we will be in the playoffs and could make some noise. Next year tho it's on and popping. These young guys on defense are growing and it's coming together.

  8. Dude why do you keep talking about what teams were and not what they are? Oakland is a good team, who cares about 15 years ago. Carolina is a team that has just been outplayed been 3 teams that are killing it right now in Denver, Minny, and us. And I'll keep saying it over and over, I don't care what's going on with the rest of that team, Brees is going to get off. He's one of the best to ever do it and for us to win that game IN New Orleans, on a Monday night, on the ten year anniversary of the Katrina bowl with Gleason in the house....that was a HUGE win man.

I don't believe NO, Oakland, and Carolina being top offenses statistically explains anything...

The Saints best receiver is 5"10" Brandin Cooks. They don't have a deep threat or a TE or a respected running game.

Carolina was w/o their top back and Cam was all out of sorts. Can't even tell you how many times I heard the announcers questioned Cam's footwork and mechanics.  Also, they couldn't even hand the ball off cleanly yesterday.

Oakland is good offensively with Cooper and Carr, but I wouldn't call them "great" or "top tier".  With the eye test, I put them about 12th cause I don't trust their backs yet.

The numbers are lying to you on those teams cause you also have to consider who they have played defensively.  Raiders = Saints (31st), Falcons (30th), Titans (14th), and Ravens (4th).  Carolina = Denver (7th), 49ers (26th), Vikings (2nd), and Falcons (30th).  Saints: Raiders (last), Giants (currently 3rd, but play tonight), Falcons (30th), and Chargers (21st), and the Falcons: Bucs (15th), Raiders (last), Saints (31st), and Carolina ( was 6th). Carolina has played good defensive teams, but Raiders, Falcons, and Saints haven't really. Raiders over Ravens was impressive, but Ravens hadn't played anybody up to that point either.  Denver will be our first true test.

And I meant no disrespect calling you a homer, but I feel a few of your comments make you sound like a blind homer fan... Remember the Falcons started out 5-0 last season and it wasn't but two weeks ago everybody was bashing Shanahan as our OC. I choose to be cautiously optimistic with this team. Trust me, I want this team to succeed and be great. This city is due for a dominate team.

You really just sound like you're trying to justify your beliefs and I understand that. But to try and down New Orleans offense is just crazy. Brees is Brees, always has been always will be. Running game or not, eventho I think Ingram is decent. Cooks is their deep threat, Fleener  decent and Thomas is showing flashes. But it doesn't matter about the weapons, it's about Brees.

And where in the world are there 12 offenses better than Oakland? Carr, cooper, and Crabtree are a pretty good trio with their squad of backs being pretty good. Their offensive is also really good.

Carolina has played really great teams and have struggled bc of it but are still a top 5 offense.

We are good, rather you can see it yet or not. And no offense taken man, it's cool. I make no qualms about me being the biggest falcon apologist on this board, I've said that before. But I know this team, and this is not last year. I've seen the physical nature that they've been playing with and the change in attitude. You'll see soon enough

Not a dumb thread at all, homer.  Our defense is still very vulnerable. Our opponents are averaging 30 ppg. Carolina hasn't played great all season... Saints haven't either.  Tampa Bay has been terrible since beating us... yet our opponents are running up the score. The defenses we've faced haven't been great either... Carolina ranked 6th was the best. Saints, Raiders, and Bucs are all bottom third of the league in defense.

Denver will be our first true test...

I will give Matty Ice credit tho. He's a changed QB.

Yep we haven't played any good defenses except Carolina...but New Orleans, Oakland and Carolina are all top 5 offenses which explains giving up points to them (love how you conveniently left that out). And Carolinas offense scored a whopping 3 points against us until we went into our prevent defense. I'll be a homer if that makes you feel better about being wrong lol. The Oakland Raiders are 3-1 and we beat them at their place. The panthers lost to the Broncos (undefeated), Vikings (undefeated) and us. Keep trying to downplay it man, it's cool, I understand. It takes time for people to admit when they're wrong but again if calling me a homer makes you feel better by all means go right ahead lol.

Carolina's in a mental funk. I watched them get into that mental funk last week and they haven't snapped out of it. They were dominating and then all of a sudden they weren't and they were out of it along with their home crowd being out of it.

I still see the Falcons losing both of their next two games. With Denver the QB doesn't matter and Seattle will be coming off of a bye. If they even split, I think the South is there's to lose.

So now we only won bc the other team is in a mental funk? Lmao ok.

I applaud your effort in explaining this but i still need sacks, lol. Especially  when I see a QB has 11 seconds to throw the ball.

Why does the front 3 or 4 struggle so much? I guess they're just not good enough?

Lol I understand. And honestly it's a mixture of things. Our base defense is littered with run stoppers on the line. That was the purpose of switching Vic to Sam so we could get more than one on the field at the same time. Freeney is good but he's limited in how much he can play. And as much as I like Reed and Clayborn they're just not starters. If we can get a Chandler Jones in FA or get a good one in the draft this defense will be set.

I understand the youth of the DBs and LBs and the mistakes they'll make as they learn on the fly.

The pass rush is still as anemic as ever.

It's the defense that we run, I would give you gifs and still shots and all that but I'm on my phone and don't know how to do it from here so I'll just try to explain it. First I'll give a point of reference in Seattle...they have been 18,20, and 18 again the last 3 seasons in sack numbers. That's below average. But in those same years they were 1,1, and 2 in total yards given up.

The plan in the cover 3 is to not give up anything deep, force the offense to take the underneath garbage and collapse quickly. Speed is a premium in the defense and you saw that in the draft when they picked up 2 speedy lbs and got Neal. It's a one gapping system and is great against the run, but the thing is you don't blitz much and you give up some pass rushing opportunities to better stop the run. Tyson Jackson starting at DE is an example of this. Up front we're running a hybrid mix of 4-3/3-4 known as a  4-3 under. The line is shifted giving the illusion of a 4th linebacker on the end when technically he's what they refer to as a LEO. He's basically your pass rushing specialist. He can play with his hand in the dirt or standing up. We're geared towards stopping the run and putting offenses in 3rd and long type situations and then again forcing them to take underneath stuff and closing on it quickly. I tired to put in a pic to at least show the alignment and why we put people in the positions we do

Falcons defense was picked apart by Brees who is a very good QB.  We still cant find a way to put persistant pressure on opposing QBs.

Our GM is pitiful and dont understand how he kept his job.   We need a real personnel guy onboard to bri ng in the players we need.

Good win in the dome last night!

Drew Brees eats no matter who he plays, he's one of the greatest ever. I've already explained how inexperienced the defense is. Throw in our nickel back being a rookie as well, forgot about him earlier. We've got the players we need for the most part, we're missing maybe 2 pieces. Either y'all want instant gratification or you just can't seem to spot talent when you see it. This is a building process, we have young guys learning on the fly. It's coming together, they will get better as the season goes on but until then they'll just ride with the offense.

Jones is going to make mistakes and take bad angles, same for Campbell. Neal is going to get beat in coverage and miss some tackles, Collins when he gets back is going to give up some plays, Vic and Grady are just going to have to keep pushing and keep working....but even with all that they're going to flash and show you what they're capable of. Let Tru keep locking up everybody's number one option (did anybody see cooks last night?)...let Freeney keep bringing the pressure off the edge while he teaches Vic....I ain't worried. We good
