I will say that this portion of the OP made me think something differently. I had been thinking (much like many have been saying) that Splitter was brought in to be Pero's replacement/upgrade. But you're right, Horford is really Pero's replacement given his usage this season, not Splitter.

Quite an interesting turn of theoretical assumptions!

Exactly. Believe it or not, but teague and Dennis driving to the basket IS the hawk's interior offense. Horford is out on the wings...

To work in Buds scheme it would take a big who can really move  and shoot the ball.   For you youngsters that don't remember the Denver Nuggets had a team similar to the Hawks and their coach was Doug Moe, whom coach Bud coaches just like him.  They had a 6-9 center from Kentucky named Dan Issel who was a dead eye shooter, but he also could really put the ball on the floor and go to the basket usually getting a basket or a shooting foul.   IMO this is the only type of center that would work in Buds offense.  I'm not sure there are many players like that in the league now.

    His name is Anthony Davis........lol

He is playing in New Orleans.  Lol....

Actually they did go hard after the one guy you mention. They kept Smoove around far too long and traded for fellow GA product Lou Williams all in an attempt to lure him here. He was adamant about not coming to ATL, and Josh eventually joined him Houston. That was Ferry's firstorder of business and when it failed, this team was plan B.

I'm not saying you are wrong, but I've never heard it said in the media that ferry made a serious attempt at Howard. All I heard was that Atlanta wasn't on his list back then.

It's not major changes that are needed .... Just some subtle ones that can answer needs but not disrupt chemistry ...Honestly getting someone like Ed Davis from Portland would help tremendously... A pf/c who rebounds and plays in the post and only needs about 20 something minutes.  He doesn't cost a lot and could probably be gettable from the Blazers.

I agree. The only reason I suggest Howard is because of the fact that he can opt out of his contract with Houston and I'm thinking he will bounce from them. Otherwise, you are correct. They don't need a superstar, just someone who can bang and get 8 to 10 rebounds to help Sap.

Yeah, LeiBron and injuries had nothing to do with it.  Also interesting that the Jordan Bulls won nothing before they got Rodman.  Who knew?

Sarcasm aside, my point is that it's not just a matter of recognizing a weakness or an area for improvement.  There's a lot that goes into why trades do or don't happen.  They can't just go to other teams and say, "Hey, we need an all-star caliber 4/5.  Take our trash and give us your starter.  I'll wait."

The hawks don't SERIOUSLY pursue the bigs that would help them.

Agreed.  I don't know why they haven't traded for Andre Drummond or prime Shaq yet?

Funny how Cleveland, like the bulls with Jordan (Rodman), knew that no matter how many points Jordan/lebron score, THAT alone doesn't win championships. You need somebody to go get it (Rodman/Thompson).   That's why Cleveland SMOKED Atlanta in the playoffs......

  7. I know this has been beat into the ground, but it's beyond frustrating. The failure to REALLY make a move to get over the hump, leaves you saying, and I quote from the movie Casino " either you were in on it or you was too dumb, either way, I gotta let you go".

That's where I stand with Hawk's management and their failure to address the problem and really challenge for the championship.

This is a good team with a major flaw. If a player like Dwight Howard was in the paint, Sap would be a beast at power forward. Even more so than now. He gets overworked trying to do his job and horfords job all at the same time. That spread offense that bud kept trying to force with Pero last year, and horford this year, would work with Howard in the paint.

Defenses would be spread inside out AND sideline to sideline.  In the playoffs, you would force other teams to beat you with jumpers, instead of the drives they get now to the bucket (lebron, etc.)

I want horford GONE. He IS the problem. He is good enough to make a person who doesn't know basketball, think that he is part of the solution. In reality, he is a glorified stretch power forward, in the way of Sap and a true run at a championship.

San Antonio would wreck this team in the playoffs. Honestly, this team isn't a sure bet against anyone that makes the playoffs.

But, bud has instilled a cultural change......LMAO

Atlanta fans are like Charlie Brown trying to kick the football. The hawks as a organization  has been a winning organization over the years. They do just enough to keep Charlie Brown coming to the games.  They are NOT gonna make big time moves to challenge for a championship.  Think back. Last year after the hawks clubbed the cavaliers in a regular season game, lebron  said "we will see you in the playoffs......"

So the league is rigged in favor of the Cavs AND the hawks are flops.    It would seem like the rigging would make it very difficult not to flop.

If anyone thinks there hasn't been a culture change since Bud got here just look at our standard now.   ECF is considered post season flopping.    We were #2 in the regular season and #4 in the playoffs.   Yeah we really suck.

Warriors went a long time without a chip and got their SECOND one since the hawks have been in Atlanta. Anything short of a championship is a failure in Atlanta. They been in the league too long to settle for "culture" changes.  But , who cares? As long as the tickets are sold......

  10. I wonder why that is? LMAO...

Bud ain't THAT dumb. He knows the Hawk's need a legit big in the middle. The NBA is the WWE. Funny how the hawk's (the league) worked it so that the hawks took splitter off on the spurs hands so that they could sign aldridge. Why can't the hawk's ever benefit from the big time deals like the spurs did? I'm not buying it.

From shady officiating to shady trades, as long as the NBA can help the networks sell beer and season  tickets are scooped up, nothing will change.....warriors in SEVEN over lebron in this year's title series....it's soo predictable..

They did look good tonight but these are not your Daddy's Boston Celtics either! The Hawks should handle this group handily and not a big deal.

Much better effort and that was good to see!

45 wins.....first round exit. This team won 60 games last season, and got exposed. Barkley is right. No legit paint game, no chip. I fell asleep on the game last night. Who cares about these empty wins in the regular season? The hawks are the braves 2.0. Regular season champs, post season flops... .

That depends on where you stand with Bazemore and Sefelosha. Personally I think entering those two in the starting lineup will equal better defense and more wins. As far as center goes bud just need to put horford back to close to the goal ....I was happy about horford getting a 3pt shot but I didn't think he would hover around the 3pt line like he's korver.

or we can make a trade or simply try starting splitter and roll with a big lineup with Teague and Bazemore in the backcourt...Bud has to try something.

The one thing everybody agrees on is the fact that korver belongs on the bench now.

It’s more than just “oh, put in a rim protector and fierce rebounder and it will solve everything!”

Korver’s days of being a help while playing big minutes are donezo and Bazemore is not a starter.

There’s basically three spots in the starting lineup that need to be changed along with the bench upgraded and the only way to do so is to completely blow the team up and tank.

I disagree. If you got somebody who can rebound, that makes EVERYBODY better. There is less pressure to make the first shot because you know you have someone who can go get it.  With the system the hawks have, you can live with the players they have if you can rebound the ball.

Perhaps, but I don't think Dwight re-signs in Atlanta.

Dwight doesn't have the prima donna cache he once had and will find out for himself on his next contract.  Atlanta is about the only city he could come to at this stage of his career and get his ego fed. That's OK,  as long as he does what he does on the floor.

I definitely agree with the five issues you layed out. You didn't even mention the weak rebounding and questionable perimeter defense. This team is really flawed. And I don't see a couple of trades saving this team either.

The team isn't flawed, they just need someone LEGIT on the boards. Somebody that's paid to do just THAT. Once that is done, everything else will fall into place.

  16. 1 minute ago, Jody23 said:

If they move Horford, they should focus more on getting talent over trying to replace him immediately with another big who can rebound.  That guy might not be avaible at the trade deadline.  Horford being in the last year of his deal makes moving him now difficult as you could only send him to a team that he would be willing to re-sign with.

    Houston would do it.

  17. I been saying this for years. Horford is the one that needs to go. I wanted Asik from Houston waaay back when he was upset about them signing Howard. Now he is the key reason Davis is able to freelance in New Orleans.

Dwight Howard can opt out in Houston. Approach a sign and trade with him and horford and a draft pick and see if all parties will bite on it.

Say what you want about Howard, but he brings exactly what the hawks need, rebounding and shot blocking, without added bonus of the fact that since he stays in the paint area, teams can't cheat on defense.
