In short, No. Hawks defense and roster are not there. Gallo, Heurter, Bogi, Trae, Caepela, Collins, TLC, Lou are too slow for finals basketball

I hear ya Trae.
Like VAN Gundy said during the game tonight about Curry getting better over the years. He said you gotta wanna play defense to win.

The pick and roll is deadly but we need to have a plan B, it can't be our only offense.
Agreed but watching the finals Hawks pick and roll would get shut down quickly imo. Good teams, good coaches adapt.

Your offense is built around your personnel.
Ah cmon Diesel, good coaches know how to bring the best out of their players. Draymond Green is a dog who speeds the ball up the court. Al Horford is looking like a rookie fresh off a college championship. Jordan Poole was just in the g league. J Brown is a stud. White is balling. There is a reason Nate was an assistant to an assistant coach. One too many player not happy with their roles and I would bet lot has to do with greenlight logo Trae and Nate lack of creativity. Just too old school, predictable and slow

Watching these Finals, Trae, Nate and the Hawks have a lot of work to do. Nate offense just isn't gonna cut it with ball dominant 5"11 pg who looks for three 1st.

No it's not a joke. You guys are in denial. Too caught up with the playoffs. A team that barely made it. Few years ago would have missed it. Garland is 2nd year (all star) who led a team that was top 4 majority of season until injuries. Hawks barely escaped them to even get in. Pistons were led by a rookie who cooked the Hawks and held Trae in check being a last place team. You don't have to build to your teams strengths around them they add attributes to their teammates. Hunter here is talking about he needs touches. Collins complained as well. Reddish complained. Bazemore would drop his head on a Trae 30 footer.
I'm a huge Hawks fan but you have to be real with yourself. This team is in shambles trying to find the right pieces defensively and offensively play with a liability on defense, shoot first pg. That's not good. You can't win a championship that way.
Players numbers should go up with a good point guard not down.

All this for a 5"11" 165lbs, Curry wannabe chucker pg who can not play defense, who has no lines in State Farm commercials with an old school, stubborn coach who was an assistant to an assistant defensive coach on a team in the "process" for 5 years. Sure Hawks, have it.
Meanwhile Cavs are trending up with Garland. Pistons are trending up with Cunningham. True, young, floor generals

Sure we can. We can hang with Dallas. GS will just outscore us. Boston and Miami are a different story. The question is who will we have healthy.
Everybody is making these hot takes based on how we played while injured.
I just don't know brother. Dre Hunter plays slow, Capela can only score on alley oops. Can he really create his own shot? Even with a healthy JC, Can he really hold his own against bigs? I can see Luka backing him down and scoring any time on him. Can Heurter be consistent in a playoff series? Can Nate out scheme a good coach with all stars? Can Trae Young play defense close to how Curry played tonight? Dallas took out the Jazz and the #1 team in the NBA. They were top 5 in the league. I dont think a healthy Hawks could take out a healthy playoff Dallas.

The later it gets into the playoffs you see teams play faster, tougher, strict defense. The Hawks style of play, the coach, and Trae currently cannot hang with these four teams left. With Trae you're playing 4 vs 5 on defense and that's not gonna cut it
-
Ben needs a heart transplant. Nope, he's not a dog. Hawks need a dog. Someone to get up in Trae space when he bricks a 30 footer with 20 seconds left on the shot clock

It’s sad that his dribbling ability at this stage is way better than JCs!
really dumb move not to play this kid this season. Nate need to adapt and get some new staff members to help him develop these players and assist with appropriate rotations.
Agreed, it's just a shame this dude never got the chance to develop this year. I cannot understand this Front office and the coaching decisions

OP I just think that lineup is too slow for today's NBA. The league is fast and uptempo. The Hawks need to run and push the ball. Kyle Anderson is not it. Trae is already a ball dominant PG under Nate system. He doesn't move like other guards off ball to get open. He just stands there. John Collins can barely create his own shot. Against bigs, he's worthless unless Trae gets him an alley oop.
Rudy Gobert is slow. Dre Hunter finally figured out how to score. Drive and get to the line. He's the only bright spot if he stays healthy. I just don't believe in a Trae led team with a assistant coach such a Nate who cannot develop young talent

If you trip a 1 legged man... and kick him into submission.. was the fight ever fair to begin with.
That's not outcoaching SDs... That's the luck of the draw. Trae didn't have a capable Big... so Miami was able to take their bigs and use them to trap and guard Trae without worry of a lob or a PNR. That's 1/2 of our offense.
So if you're Nate.. what do you do??
1. Line the perimeter with our three point shooters and hope that Trae can find the open man?
Tried that and it leads to more T.O.s for Trae and bad 3pt shooting numbers for our "shooters".
2. Have our "shooters" to try to go inside for scores?
Tried that. It worked some.. but a lot of times, they lost the ball because our "shooters" aren't great ball handlers.
The one legged man getting tripped. We couldn't keep them off of the offensive boards. We couldn't keep them off of the FT line. IN game 2, they were +15 in FTs.. 29 to 14... Jimmy Butler built a house on the free throw line. Why? Because we didn't have any bigs to protect the rim. Game 4, Clint played less than 20 minutes and he had 8 rebounds and a Block. Where was this in all those other games? In his 2 games playing less than 20 minutes each, Clint led our team in rebounding... BY 2.0+ rpg. That's a 1 legged man SDs...
How can you call it outcoaching when your most available rebounder averaged 5.4 rpg and he played over 20 mpg???
You don't think Spo would have prepared for Clint? Having Clint would have maybe given you one game. Ok you lost in 6 games in the first round.
Nate is not a good coach man. What would you grade Nate in this first full season? In my book he's no greater than Pierce. Again, he's an assistant coach for a reason. He's had his chances and this playoffs showed. Does he develop players? Perhaps he could have had a Clint replacement or better if he could develop and maximize his players on the bench.
-
Nate was outcoached. Spo worked Nate team with older, slower, bench players. Nate doesn't even know how to use his bench. Hawks got fleeced from last year act. That's all on GM. There's a reason Nate playoff record is what it is. There's a reason Nate was an assistant coach and that's what he came to accept. He was an assistant coach to a backup assistant coach. If you want the potential to become a head coach come to Atlanta. But if you're a young player (rookie) pray you don't get chosen by Atlanta

The problem will always remain with the coach. If that team was assembled it still wouldn't matter because Nate has no offensive plays or strategy. And he's too old school.
Trae still can't play defense so it's 4 vs 5
Trae still shoots 30 footers like Josh Smith shoots three's. Coaching lets him.
And finally the Hawks just don't run with Trae. They'll get a defensive rebound, give it to Trae and run whatever same play they run all game. Look for alley oop, not there, pass to Heurter, he doesn't want to score. Finally Trae from the logo for the love of God. I hate how this team is ran. Sorry for rant

We were very competitive with Milwaukee up and until Trae went down and that was without the guy who would have been our most important defender in the series: Deandre Hunter and the guy who turned out to be one of the very best defenders after his return: Cam Reddish. If Hunter is there, suddenly the complexion changes because you aren't playing Solo huge minutes and you can make Hunter the primary defender for Giannis and suddenly we become significantly better on both sides of the ball. If Cam isn't hurt, we come in with two ace wing defenders and guys like Capela can park themselves in the paint without having to constantly wade into no-man's land trying to cover for other teammates.
Also not hearing it about Trae / Morant. I'm taking Trae all day in that comparison and that is with me readily conceding that Ja is an up and coming star. But with fewer injuries, Ja's Grizzlies barely made the playoffs.
Trae and the rest of our team do still have plenty to learn and Trae could pick up some important lessons from Curry and Paul for sure but they are both MVP-level, HOF PGs so that isn't much of a revelation for a guy who is 22 years old.
I will admit I am a jazz fan and people out here finally got a chance to see the Hawks. I personally watched their series from game 2 of Philly throughout the Bucks. They're exciting to watch no doubt about it and I think the country was pulling for them. I've seen a lot of Capela through the years and seeing Collins for the 1st time in that atmosphere, he just didn't look good imo. Shoots too many threes, can't produce his own shot and looked awful against bigs. But you guys know your team and your needs. I really liked Cam Reddish, that guy looks better pro than at Duke. You may have a steal. I've only seen Hunter in the Virginia/TT championship game. I just still think Hawks would have lost either way. I'm not a Trae hater but I listened to game two vs Milwaukee through headphones and twice I heard ppl from the crowd yell, "Keep shooting Trae!" Those 35 footers killed you guys and are a bit unnecessary so often.

A healthy Hawks vs a healthy Bucks. Bucks are pulling off the win because Collins and Capela were defensive liabilities, they were too small, couldn't rebound, Collins would shrink. Also Trae doesn't play defense so the defense breaks down on Trae leading to anyone wide open. On top of Trae poor ill-advised threes at the wrong time. He can't help it. Chris Paul is a true floor general. Morant is a floor general. Curry is under control with his shot selection. Trae and the young Hawks have to learn collective defense, rebounding and proper ball movement. Playoffs exposed all of it

Also most of our problems defensively against the Bucks was because we couldn't stop Jrue and Middleton from getting anywhere they wanted on the court. So it meant our bigs had to help more on defense against them, leaving guys like Portis and Lopez open for easy baskets. A lot of our problems would be solved with a healthy Hunter and Reddish.
That's one of your problems. But playoff teams can gameplan against Cam and Hunter. Trae cannot play a lick of defense because he's just too light so the team is always playing 4 on 5. You need a good quality center to make up for Trae. Capela and Collins will not get you pass a healthy Nets and still the Bucks with a healthy Dante D. Capela and Collins got exposed for their size and toughness

You gotta understand that Trae plays with all stars during the summer. Every week he's in a different gym going against talent, playing with good talent joining pick up games and training. No one on this team beside him work that hard off season. Once the nba slowed down for him, he knew he was the best player on this team. You gotta be honest, Pierce isn't the guy to help Trae get to almost unstoppable in this league. Trae coach is his trainer right now. Hawks dont run any good offensive sets that throws teams off guard. Young is out there creating and breaking down defenses

This team just isn't built for todays nba playoffs
Will the Hawks ever measure up and become Golden State Warriors East?

I dunno brother. You can build around CP3 because he's smarter. CP3 prime can score like Trae if he wanted. I'll never forget he purposely scored his late grandfather's age in h.s. Did it with ease. I can't see a successful NBA team building around Trae because he pretty much a one trick pony. 30 foot three pointer, dribble dribble dribble looks for lob pass. There's no in-between in his game. No bag, no package. How does he get better at defense? Will he put the work in to bulk? Will it affect his game, his speed, his shot if he does? I look at Smart posting up a bigger Curry and he backed him down easily but Curry still played good solid defense. The Hawks have a long way to go. From the coach to the leader on the floor.
