    Our biggest issue was this:

    Screenshot_20240209_102656_Samsung Internet.jpg

......teams come barreling in looking for bargain deals and presentimg their bargain offers.

The very public 'EVERYBODY BUT TRAE AND JJ Available' - again very problematic.

We just need a very different approach to the how our players are so 'PUBLICLY' readily available for so long every TDL and Offseason.   And then of course we do nothing.

How much of that is on the front office and how much of that is on the "media insiders"... tough to say.

To me the step we skipped is acquiring a true second star.  They signed JC to an extension paying him to be at least a third star and he never made the leap and in fact regressed.  We spent half of our draft capital on Murray and he didn’t make the impact we hoped.

$105M spend and multiple draft picks burned on Murray, JC, Hunter, Capela, and Bogi.  We failed on what we invested in, not a willingness to invest.  Which of those investments got us a secondary star to pair with Trae?

Even after cutting JC if we sign Bey next year and add an MLE player we’ll move close to a top 10 payroll team.  What will that do for us?  Another player adds depth, but we still skipped the MOST important step.  Adding another Batman or Robin.

If we spend on Bey and an MLE, we’ll have a big collection of non all stars, top 10 payroll, and still be a Play In team.

Also, very limited options to upgrade from there.

I think our player development/drafting also hurt. We had three top 10 picks and pretty much got one mid level starter out of all that. What is saving this season from being a complete disaster is hitting on JJ. It's tough to add a star, teams with a star don't want to trade. And to boot, with the playin those mediocre teams are less willing to give up on theirs. Being a 9th or 10th place team was squarely sellers territory in the past.. .not anymore.

People have short memories. That Hawks team when it was rolling was a sight to behold... also after Nate took over they finished that stretch of season with a 12th ranked drtg I believe. I can't find the sources but I remember seeing it on a telecast late in the season that under Nate the Hawks had the #1 (or #2) ranked offense and the 12th ranked defense. That's championship caliber.

One caveat though... the league right now is so much better than it was back then. Hawks have kind of treaded water in their team building while the rest of the league has been loading up.

A number of things broke the Hawks way for sure, but I can't get down with calling the ECF run a fluke.  That team had some elements that the Hawks haven't had since.

This is why Hawks piddling around refusing to add good players because "he's not worth going into the tax for" BS is so frustrating.  It doesn't take two superstars or a big three anymore to get to the finals.  It takes one star and a bunch of guys who are good, play hard, and knock down shots.

The play-in has altered the fundamental power dynamics up and down the standings. Every team wants to make the playoffs and almost every team is in a position to do so, so those "extra" guys no one used to care about end up mattering quite a bit. Look around the league in both conferences at the trade deadline... not a lot of sellers.

  6. No one is even a little interested in Gallo? I know, I know, defense blah blah blah... Fact is doesn't matter which 35 year old vet we get from the February waiver wire none are turning around our 28th ranked defense or likely moving the needle in any significant way on that end. Gallo can get hot a win you a game or two.

Nobody thinks these are the absolute best 3pt shooters in the league.  But they are all stars (other than Malik Beasley).

Why can't the dunk contest do this?  Crazy that we have a bunch of role players and sub-NBA players in what is historically the highest profile event of the entire weekend.  The legendary dunk contests are the most memorable thing about the All-Star weekend in the entirety of the NBA's history.  Nobody remembers any particular game or performance in the actual game very long.  You remember just a few big moments from the 3pt contest but the dunk contest is replete with stuff that lives in our memories.  But sure let's give that to guys who aren't even rotation players in 2023-24.

Lebron pretty much to blame for that.

I don't think i understand the new landscape.  It'll be interesting if owners can adapt.  We know ours will but some others actually like spending.

I'd do $9m for Bey all day every day.

Yea, 9 isn't gonna be the number. If his " percieved value" is 9-14 than safe to say he will go to the one spot that will overpay him. And there'll be somebody for sure that will do so.

  9. 6 minutes ago, macdaddy said:

He'll certainly get more.  Colin Sexton, Davis Bertans, and Markell Fultz are making 17m

Not sure about that assessment. Bertans is ridiculously overpaid in the year 2024 but when he got his deal he was coming off being an absolute bucket. Sexton averaged 24 ppg once, Fultz... that's a strange one. I think 14-17 is what Bey will end up with.

Teams are starting to really value those small pieces.

There's so much parity the margin between teams in the bottom, middle and top of the standings is quite thin. Those pieces matter.

They sound positive about it on back channels. I believe they are ready to pay the LT.

A.J. is the player that Atlanta is shopping in these bigger deals name deals like Issac Okoro.

Mills has been used as a package player or his own with picks for an upgrade.

Clint is probably going to finish out his deal with Atlanta even if its as a backup.

Dre just depends on big wings and their availability. No one is just giving these guys away as the demand is high. My guess is Dre stays. I do think this summer could go either way. He could stay or go. He's the new Capela. Where you always are seeking an upgrade but you can't trade him without having a major void.

Looking for defense in the year 2024 is like looking for snow cones in the Sahara.

Big if.  If the Hawks trade Capela, last night we got a preview of what our team will look like.  Following all the posts about the game I know that some posters were really down on our #3 center.  Bruno came through!  By games end these same posters were in his corner.

Thursday coming soon.  The countdown to the trade deadline will shift from weeks remaining, now days remaining, then we will have hours remaining.  Will we?  The closer the time comes, the better we look!  Maybe?  Maybe not?

    :smug:

I love Clint, but we should have moved him seasons ago. He's just not dependable anymore in his health and consistency, and hasn't been for a while.

  14. Reaves is perhaps the best value deal in the entire NBA. That's why he is covetted. He can shoot and pass at a very high percentile for his position. As has been noted, he is similar to Bogi in overall production but at a much lesser price.

I'm excited to see him playing in Atlanta.

It is remarkable that when you sort the 52 players from the last draft class who have made an appearance this season, Bufking and Gueye are tied for dead last in minutes played.

Kobe has played 4 minutes.  The guy picked right before him has played 908 minutes.  The guy picked right after him has played 1018 minutes.  Can't wait to see his real debut.

    Remarkable and, frankly, baffling.

I'm not waiting until 2028 to have another contending Hawks team. If the plan is a complete rebuild, then go ahead and trade Trae now. We will waste a generational offensive talent because our stupid owner and his son couldn't let the basketball minds stick to the plan.

IF the actual plan is a total rebuild, then I don't know how much longer I can be a Hawks fan. I've been here through losing season after losing season. I still buy multi-game ticket packages and season tickets for some years. But I can't go through another rebuild after this. We lucked into one of the most win-win trades with Luka and Trae, and we are just gonna waste his prime years rebuilding and trading away all of his running mates.

Already gave up on this team when it came out the only reason they traded Huerter was to not pay a little luxury tax. Told me all I needed to know about this ownership group and front office.
